(3 Marks) When a person goes far away from his home in order to visit a place, family, friends or relatives or goes for a pilgrimage is called tourism. Its types are Rural tourism, Urban tourism and heritage tourism (b) List and describe the factors that affect the growth of tourism negatively. i. Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, tsunamis affect the tourism to decrease in the specific area, as the tourist might not want to visit that place as the disasters might have destroyed the areas. ii. Political instability like if a war is going on in a country the tourist might not want to go to that unsafe area or may be their government asks them to cancel their tour and return to their own country. Q 2-How is Pakistan developing socially? Explain with the help of development indicators. (5 Marks) According to the researchers Pakistan is developing economically at a good rate but its social development level is not so satisfactory.for e.g. the literacy rate is low and the infant mortality rate is high in Pakistan. The percentage of rural population that has an access to safe drinking water and proper disposal of sewerage water is quite low as compared to the other developing countries. Q 3- (a) Explain the attempts made by The Citizens Foundation(TCF) towards social development in Pakistan.. TCF was established in August 1995 by a group of citizens( NGO) concerned by the dismal( low/ unsatisfactory) state of education in Pakistan. It is Pakistan s leading organization in the field of formal education. Nearly 455 TCF schools are situated in all parts of Pakistan. There is a total of 55,000 students in 343 primary schools and 112 secondary schools. In all these schools there is equal number of boys and girls which show that this NGO has focused on providing equal rights and opportunities for the education of girls. (b)to reduce the landslides in Murree area Landslide Hazard Reduction Programme( LHRP )was established. List and describe the policies of LHRP towards landslides. (3 Marks). Engineering protection policy: e.g. the construction of walls to protect housing and roads. Land use regulatory policy: to control developments e.g. forbid quarrying and high- rise hotels on steep slopes. Compensation policy: e.g,. small grants( help/aid) for people unable to afford to repair their damaged houses. Q 4- Describe the following. (5 Marks). i. Aral Sea is located in Kazakhstan( this part of the sea is called as North Aral sea) and Uzbekistan ( this part of the sea is called as South Aral sea). ii. The rivers Amu Darya and Syr Darya bring water into the Aral Sea. iii. For many years there was irrigation along the banks of these rivers for the production of cotton. After 1960 the Soviet Union built many dams and miles of irrigation canals to use the water in the Syr

5 Darya in order to increase the output of cotton in the area which is now Kazakhstan.In addition, in 1957 the Soviet Union started to build the Karakum Canal to take water from the Amu Darya for irrigation in what is now western Turkmenistan. This canal was finished in 1988 and reached the Caspian Sea. It is one of the biggest canals in the world. As a result of these irrigation projects much less water reached the Aral Sea and its level began to drop. Then its surface areas decreased. Now the Amu Darya doesn,t supply the Aral Sea at all and evaporation has added to the problems. iv. Effects on environment : a) Drastic change in the climate b) Strong winds blow away up to 100 million tons of dust every year This dust also carries harmful substances such as pesticides and industrial waste. c) Loss of fish and wild life (kinds of mammals and types of birds in that area have been reduced) Effects on people : a) People in that area are getting respiratory diseases and problems such as TB. And Asthma. b) Fishing has been activity stopped. c) Boat repairing and fish processing. d) Increase in unemployment and famine. e) As a result some people migrated from that area. v. The average temperature of the Earth has risen by 0.6% over the last 100 years. It is caused because of the air pollution which is caused mainly by burning fossil fuels in thermal power stations, vehicles, industries and for cooking etc. in rural areas. Air pollution is caused by the Green house gases mainly Carbon dioxide and Methane. CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons ) are produced by air conditioners and refrigerators. Carbon dioxide is produced when fossil fuels are burnt and methane is produced when dead and waste matter decompose in absence of oxygen. Because of air pollution Ozone layer is damaged and it causes more heat of the sun to reach the Earth. As a result the sea temperature would rise, reduction in the snowfall in the mountainous areas, less glaciers to be formed, glaciers melting causing the sea level to rise which would cause permanent flooding of low-lying coastal areas and drastic change in the world s climate. (b) What ways of development have caused Globalisation? Describe. Development in ways of trade, transport and communication have led to Globalisation. For e.g. Faster ways of transportation such as aero planes use of text msg, , cellular phones e.tc for quick communication manufactures, expertise in multinational companies have increased trade Increased social, cultural and economic links have brought the people closer throughout the world
