2 Training and Development The people of Synergy Security Solutions are the organisation s greatest asset. By facilitating the provision of learning and development opportunities, facilities and financial help, Synergy aims to ensure that its entire people are in possession of the skills, knowledge and experience they need to perform their job effectively and ensure the Synergy meets its business objectives. Objective The purpose of the Learning and Development objective is to underpin the HR vision of developing people to help provide, maintain and raise the skills necessary to deliver the objectives within the business plan. All staff employed by Synergy are included in this.
3 LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES >> Learning and development is a central element in the Synergy HR Vision to deliver high performance through its people. The key principles of learning and developing in Synergy are: f Key learning priorities are established by the Board of Directors for the whole organisation and will feed into team learning plans and individual f Personal Development Plans (PDPs); learning and development policies, processes and activities will be aligned to Excellence Through People principles; f PDPs will be the primary means for people to identify their learning and development needs based on their role, performance and the business objectives; the design and delivery of learning and development opportunities is needs based and targets Synergy priorities f Learning and development opportunities are offered to all staff employed by Synergy in a fair and equitable manner and will represent value for money; f Team learning as well as individual learning is valued and promoted; f A variety of learning and development methods are encouraged, including but not limited to, mentoring, coaching, attendance at workshops and conferences, secondments, job-shadowing, programmes and on-going and one-off courses. f Formal and informal workplace and on-the-job learning is encouraged. f All activities will be evaluated in terms of their effectiveness and their contribution to the enhanced learning of staff. f Managers play a key role in the appraisal process by assessing the knowledge, skills and experience of their staff against the activities they will perform in their jobs f In addition, managers will play a key role in identifying solutions to any learning and development gaps that are recognised through the appraisal process. KEY ROLES >> Everyone in Synergy will have a role to play in delivering a successful learning and development policy and learning plan. The LEADERSHIP OF SYNERGY will: Demonstrate continued commitment to Synergy being an Excellence Through People accredited organisation; f Provide effective learning opportunities and experiences; f Provide learning and development opportunities to help employees work flexibly to meet the constant changes facing the service; f Identify key learning priorities that will assist the organisation in meeting its business objectives; f Identify and make resources available to meet the learning and development needs of the workforce; f Champion the use of the appraisal process to enable managers/supervisors to discuss learning and development needs through staff supervision and management processes; f Evaluate the impact of learning on knowledge, skills, attitude, performance and the achievement of business objectives; f Facilitate the smooth induction of all new employees to Synergy, by providing the learning and development they need to do their job; f Make all employees aware of learning and development opportunities available to them; f Help all employees to identify and meet job related learning and development needs; f Consult with The ISIA, SII & PSA on appropriate learning and development issues.
4 The MANAGEMENT AT SYNERGY will: f Set objectives for learning and development to meet needs at individual, branch and directorate levels; f Agree individual, and where appropriate, team objectives relating to performance and development; f Agree appropriate PDPs to support achievement of these objectives, and to include in the Learning Plan for the Function/Unit; f Provide individuals and teams with regular feedback on their performance in order to actively identify future learning and development needs; f Create and encourage opportunities for non-course based development, such as computer-based learning or onthe-job learning; f Ensure that any learning and development being planned by a member of their team represents good value for money for Synergy and fits with organisational priorities and established organisational procedures and codes of practice; f Provide, in accordance with the agency's business needs, suitable opportunities for staff to apply new found skills and knowledge; f Evaluate the effectiveness and value for money of learning and development activities undertaken by members of their teams. The PEOPLE OF SYNERGY will: f Complete and agree PDPs as part of the appraisal process in a timely manner; f Implement those parts of the PDP that are identified as being the individual s responsibility; f Put time aside, as part of the appraisal process, to evaluate with their manager the learning and development activities they have undertaken; f Carefully research learning and development options before choices are made, ensuring the best possible fit with organisational priorities and ensuring that EHS s investment represents good value for money; f Share knowledge and skills acquired with other colleagues. The LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT TEAM will: f Work as business partners with the leadership, management, trade union representatives and people of the Synergy Security Solutions to deliver the strategic learning and development themes of the HR Strategy. f Provide guidance and advice to the Board on learning activities and progress against objectives. f Develop appropriate learning and development policies and processes. f Assist with the establishment of a costed learning plan, and prioritise and monitor spend against budget. f Provide advice on how to implement learning and development policies and processes. f Provide guidance on the completion of PDPs and the Learning Plan. f Provide information and advice on learning options and methods. f Oversee the Assistance to Study policy and ensure it is implemented in a fair and equitable manner. f Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the policy and associated learning and development activities.
5 TRAINING >> All Synergy security staff complete Basic Job Training (BJT) - FETAC level 4. This is the basic course to satisfy the Private Security Authority (PSA licensing) requirements and includes our company induction and safety training. Additional site familiarisation training is also provided to all Security Officers. We will train a large proportion of the team deployed to FETAC level 5 and 6. These modules focus more on customer care and include elements of supervision and management skills. Having completed the basic job training, Synergy will provide all Security Officers with access to additional training in related topics such as: f Customer Care training f Health and Safety and Fire Awareness f First Aid - One/four day, and specialised courses i.e Defibrillator training f Report Writing Skills f Deportment and uniform care f Meet and greet skills We ensure that our staff are well trained and highly skilled to deliver the level of service that our clients expect. In addition we expose our staff to a range of training opportunities and experiences as shown below. SPECIALIST TRAINING: We work with specialist training providers to deliver bespoke, focused training courses, including: f Counter-terrorist awareness f Critical incidents and crisis management f Crisis media management f Security Awareness f Customer Services Training SECURITY TRAINING PROGRAMME On selection of the right people for employment at Synergy, we conduct an induction program, where we complete the Security Institute of Ireland (SII) Program on Basic Guarding Skills. Our staff are continuously assessed over their probation period by our Operations Department and we actively seek feedback from our clients on their performance also. As part of the integration with clients we will also seek to have our staff complete training in line with client s site specific requirements i.e. customer service requirements, site health and safety, emergency evacuation etc. Refresher Training plays a vital role is the service levels that we pride ourselves in providing to our clients. We ensure all our employees are fully up to date with all training requirements and that refresher training is mandatory and is held regularly.

8 FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING This training program is designed for those staff members with a responsibility for fire safety within their client location. The programs content includes: f Basic background to legislation, specifically in the area of Fire Safety f Information on the different types of fire-fighting equipment f When to use appropriate Fire Extinguishers f Practical fire fighting techniques FIRST AID TRAINING These are training programs for those members of staff who have been nominated as First Aider s for their client location. All courses offered would deal with how to react to common accidents that occur in the workplace, or in the home, until medically qualified personnel arrive. OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID: SIX EVENINGS OR THREE DAYS This course will run for three working days. At the end of the course there is a short exam, after which the staff member will receive a Certificate in Occupational First Aid. This is valid for three years. The course will cover such areas as: f Sustaining Life - Promoting Recovery f Responsibilities of a First Aider f Fractures, breaks, burns and scalds f Poisoning, etc. f Action to be taken in an emergency REFRESHER COURSE IN OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID: 1 DAY This course is for those staff members who have attended a course on Occupational First Aid in the last three years, and are now in need of being recertified. There is a short exam at the end of the day and again the qualification lasts for three years. Synergy has invested heavily in the infrastructure of our training division, with the setting up in 2003 of our own training rooms within our headquarters. From this location we offer these courses to all staff at the outset.
