As a Trainee Solicitor you will spend time in our main departments; Mergers &Acquisitions and Corporate, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Banking &Financial Services, Commercial Property, Tax and Pensions. In each department you will work as part of a team with all the support, facilities and guidance you need to learn about that area of the law. In addition, we have a range of specialist units focusing on particular areas of the law like EU & Competition, Restructuring & Insolvency, Energy, Environment, and Intellectual Property & Technology to name but a few. In addition to the Law Society s Professional Practice Courses, which form part of your training contract, we use a combination of on-the-job experience, informal mentoring and our Trainee Education Programme (TEP). 8 THE APPLICATION PROCESS Candidate criteria All applicants must be either final year degree students, post graduates or have successfully obtained a third level degree qualification. Although a primary degree is a pre-requisite, we don t just look for people who are academically high achievers or limit applicants to those who have studied law. We accept degrees from all disciplines. It is also important to us that you can work as part of a team, are motivated, have initiative and have clear expectations of your future. I have had the opportunity to work on a number of high-profile deals and transactions, including the 330 million IPO of Malin Corporation plc and the proposed corporate inversion into Ireland of an American pharmaceutical company. The work has been extremely valuable in terms of sharpening my commercial awareness, I have also benefited from exposure to and interaction directly with clients. Trainee Solicitors in A&L Goodbody are really part of the team and are encouraged to take responsibility for specific issues within a transaction. The complex issues I have been exposed to on transactions to date have been a great learning experience. VANCE POWER 2nd Year Trainee, Bachelor of Civil Law, University College Cork, LLM, London School of Economics I m currently on my second rotation with the Investment Funds team in our London office. Living and working in London is a fantastic experience. The office is located in the heart of the business district and the Firm provides a house in Islington which I share with two other Trainee Solicitors from my intake. In London, I have had the opportunity to become involved in some really interesting work and I now have a much better understanding of the regulatory framework governing investment funds in Ireland. It has also given me a much better insight on how our London and Dublin offices work together. SINEAD O DONNELL 1st Year Trainee, Law with History, University College Dublin Being a Trainee Solicitor can be challenging at times but the firm places a real emphasis on having a healthy work/life balance, with a dedicated Social Committee regularly organising social events such as Strictly Come Dancing for those brave enough! I was delighted to become involved in the A&L Goodbody choir and we regularly perform at events and enter competitions. It s a great way to meet A&L people that I wouldn t necessarily have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The Firm is also hugely supportive of people playing sport or participating in other extra-curricular activities. Having an on-site gym providing classes is also great for keeping fit and a great time saver! ANDREW KENNEDY Newly Qualified Solicitor, B.A. (Mod.), Business and Political Science, Trinity College Dublin Having qualified as a Solicitor in December 2014, the Firm ensured that the transition from Trainee Solicitor to fully qualified Solicitor was as seamless as possible. A fully comprehensive induction programme was organized to equip us with the necessary training that we needed going forward. The induction covered essential documents, jargon and a practical overview of the typical transactions that we would now encounter as Solicitors. The objective of this was to introduce us into our new departments and the area of law that we would be practicing, and better help us integrate into our new roles as quickly and smoothly as possible.
