1 The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest orchestras in the UK. Based in Glasgow, it is part of the BBC s family of orchestras, broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3, and performs live around Scotland, the UK, at the BBC Proms each year and tours internationally. The orchestra s Chief Conductor is Thomas Dausgaard, and the orchestra has a strong reputation for exceptional playing, commitment to contemporary music and a willingness to experiment. The BBC SSO is seeking an accomplished and experienced Head of Orchestra Management to join the team of this exceptional orchestra in the vibrant and busy BBC music environment. Job title Division Reports to (title) Location base Head of Orchestra Management Nations and Regions, Scotland Director, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra City Halls, Glasgow Job purpose The Head of Orchestral Management is a key member of the Senior Management Team of the BBC SSO, and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the BBC SSO players and orchestral support team. He or she will manage the personnel systems of the Orchestra and lead the orchestral support team in the running of rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions in the UK and overseas. The Head of Orchestral Management will have a full understanding of the professional standards required for creating first class performance and broadcasting output and will possess endless enthusiasm in a pressured but exciting department. Job specific responsibilities and accountabilities Senior Management Team: to attend and play a full part in weekly SMT meetings. Orchestra Management: To coordinate the day-to-day running of the Orchestra and to maintain good working relations with the members of the orchestra at all times Player line management: to be the immediate line manager of the orchestra members, undertaking all personnel matters in consultation with the BBC HR including leave, disciplinary procedures, health and safety issues, welfare concerns and matters of individual dispute. Player bookings: to oversee the booking of extra and deputy players (in conjunction with the Assistant Orchestra Manager). Scheduling: to oversee the production of orchestra schedules using OPAS (with the Planning and Events Coordinator). Player committees: to attend and work proactively with the Player Committee and other orchestral player groups. Player Recruitment: to oversee appointments to the Orchestra including advertising vacant positions, coordinating auditions and trials, and finalising contractual terms between the parties involved, working within the budget agreed with the Director and HR. Orchestral Support Team: to manage the orchestral support team (Assistant Orchestra Manager, Stage Manager, Orchestra and Events Co-ordinator, Planning and Events Co-ordinator, Music Librarian). Hosting artists: with the team, to oversee the care and hospitality of staff and guest conductors and soloists, Page 1 of 5

2 ensuring that individuals are looked after at all times and that the best possible service is provided by the staff of the Orchestra in meeting individual requirements. Operations Team: to chair the weekly cross-departmental operational meeting. BBC / MU Regulations: to ensure adherence to the orchestra s contracts of employment and the rules governing the employment of orchestral musicians as agreed between the BBC and the Musicians Union, and with the Director to liaise with the Musicians Union and the orchestra s Union Steward on all appropriate matters. Budget Management: to prepare orchestral budgets for tours and events with the Director and to monitor costs against budget, providing updates and reports as necessary. Logistics: to manage and oversee out-of-town events and touring logistics in Scotland, the UK and internationally. Concerts and events: to attend concerts, learning events, rehearsals, recordings, broadcasts and tours as required and be available to duty manage out of hours on a rota basis with the operations team. Health and Safely: to attend BBC Scotland Health and Safety Forums (quarterly) and to be aware of BBC and other legislation regarding H&S and ensure the provision of appropriate facilities including lighting, heating, air conditioning, staging and furniture and input to Risk Assessments with particular reference to issues appertaining to Noise in the Workplace. Wider BBC: to liaise with other colleagues within the BBC in Scotland and elsewhere and to be a source of information on the workings of the orchestra. Other duties: to undertake any other reasonable and appropriate duties as a representative of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as may be required on occasion by the Director.
