We work with them to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them from village councils to international conventions. The Sustainable Markets Group drives IIED's efforts to ensure that markets promote sustainable development at local and global levels, rather than undermining it, by addressing issues of market structure, environmental externalities, power, access and rules of operation. Our work comes under two main thematic areas: environmental economics and the private sector. We have come together because we recognise that our economy is failing to deliver either environmental sustainability or social equity. In short, our economic system is failing people and the planet. The GEC is governed by a Steering Group who meets every month to discuss strategy and management, and is coordinated by a small secretariat based at IIED's offices. Green Economy Coalition staff: Emily Benson, Project Manager, Green Economy Coalition (currently on maternity leave) Oliver Greenfield, Convenor, Green Economy Coalition Chris Hopkins, Project Officer, Green Economy Coalition Vacant, Senior Coordinator* *Joint position Main responsibilities Representative areas of responsibility 1. Management and coordination (30%) Ensure the sound management of complex projects and programmes of work under own responsibility and oversee the consistent application of institute policies, rules and guidance for: compliance; donor reporting; monitoring and evaluation; project management; risk identification, analysis and management. Manage the preparation and processing of donor, partner, subcontractor and consultants contracts, delegating responsibilities and tasks to others as necessary. Monitor progress against donor contracts, keep track of and act on contract milestones, compliance issues and reporting deadlines. Liaise with donors and subcontractors in relation to (non-technical) contractual matters. Draft financial and narrative documents for donor reporting and support team / project leaders and managers with the preparation of technical reports. Coordinate evaluations to recommend improvements for future projects. Manage personal administrative tasks related to own work.support other teams within the group when necessary, providing cover for coordinators during absence. 2. Finance (30%) Undertake budget and financial management for complex projects and work programmes. Manage and maintain team budgets, and inform and advise team leaders and managers on potential challenges and solutions. Undertake financial planning at team and project level and contribute analyses and information for overall financial planning at the group level. Prepare documentation for audits and financial reporting for own project portfolio. Manage the relationship with project funders, subcontractors and partners for all finance-related matters and delegate tasks to others as appropriate. 2
3 Work with partners and subcontractors to develop capacity for financial reporting and donor compliance. Coordinate project and team financial administration, delegating as appropriate. 3. Business development and fundraising (10%) Provide background information and general support to team leaders and managers to prepare strategies and plans, in liaison with business development colleagues. Organise and carry out business development activities and events where appropriate. Draft budgets and collect and collate other necessary financial and institutional information to finalise project proposals. Assist with editing and finalising documents before submission to funders. 4. Communications and event management (25%) Oversee production and distribution of teams knowledge and communication products, delegating tasks as appropriate. Ensure relevant team and project webpages are regularly updated and maintained, delegating as appropriate. Assist with the promotion of projects outputs and impacts through the IIED and satellite websites, via social media, at events, etc. Organise teams internal communications and contribute to intra-group coordination. Oversee the organisational, logistical, communication, financial and practical aspects of event management for own project portfolio. Contribute to the technical aspects as relevant. Participate in events, nationally or internationally, and contribute to their facilitation, running, reporting and follow-up as necessary. Oversee the maintenance and updating of relevant databases (contacts, publications, image library) and information platforms for own projects, delegating as appropriate. Assist with the completion of the IIED monthly update on activities. General administration Respond to correspondence and enquiries, replying directly whenever possible and referring to other staff when necessary. Contribute to the IIED Results Framework reporting and planning process Coordinate internal team meetings, including organising regular monthly meetings and taking minutes/action points. 5. Contributions to institutional life (5%) Participate in IIED-wide coordinators and core group (COG). Participate in group and cross-organisational activities and processes as required. Participate in organisation-wide projects, initiatives or working groups for the development, implementation and improvement of systems and business operations. Contribute to strategy reviews and development through group meetings and discussions. Act as the interface between own projects and teams and the rest of the institute. Act as a coach or a mentor to colleagues. 3
4 Person specification Skills and experience Qualifications Knowledge Essential Relevant first degree or equivalent level of education Thorough knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint), with at least intermediate level Excel skills An interest in and understanding of the issues involved in Sustainable Development Desirable Business, finance or project management qualification Familiarity with social media and the internet Familiarity with editorial and publishing processes Working knowledge of another relevant international language Experience Relevant work experience in coordination and strategic support roles Experience of managing a portfolio of complex budgets; of financial planning, reporting, monitoring and procurement Understanding and experience of the funding proposal cycle Experience of organising meetings and events Experience of supporting busy individuals, frequently travelling or based at other locations Experience of working within the voluntary sector and particularly in non-governmental organisations. Experience of working in an international context. Experience of acting as the interface between project staff and finance and communications staff, promoting awareness of their respective needs Skills Excellent numeracy and analytical skills and attention to detail Excellent oral and written communication skills, with fluency in English to convey messages clearly and concisely Editing, synthesis and proofreading skills Ability to liaise with different partners, donors, stakeholders and audiences at various levels and remotely 4
