1 Section 1: Job Description Job Title: Linux Specialist Post No: TBC Band: E Job family: Professional & Services Directorate: Information & Technology Section/Dept: IT Operations No. of Direct Reports: 1 No. of Indirect Reports: 0 Reports to (Position): Head of IT Infrastructure Job Purpose: To deliver RBG Kew s mission by maintaining and developing Linux servers and IT systems, which Kew depends upon to deliver IT services to internal and external users. Focusing on System Design, Installations & Server Builds. Responsible for assisting IT in the delivery, monitoring and managing the day to day production environments. Hardening, configuration and maintenance of systems and services. Updating documentation and diagrams. The post holder will also lead the Linux team, developing them to become a high performing team and be able to provide a proactive and reactive service to meet requirements and challenges from the business. Job Context: The post holder will be responsible for the administration and maintenance of Kew s: Linux server estate MySQL / SyBase / Maria database servers Linux radius service Gitlab environment Configuration management environment Kemp load balancers They will also be responsible for the delivery of specific areas including: Database tuning Security of the environments adhering to Kew s security policies Creation of scripts to support monitoring/application deployment/server deployment The postholder will also be responsible for the provision of support to the Application Development team for their code changes and deployment of new code to Kew s production environment. The postholder is also expected to be a technical expert in their own right and display the ability to both apply that knowledge and disseminate to the rest of the team and to provide best practice approach in the deployment and architecture of the environments (Dev/UAT/Prod).
2 Accountabilities: 1. Maintaining stable and secure Linux server/client infrastructure and resolving hardware & software issues. 2. Maintain a stable environment whereby the developers and application support staff are able to perform their day to day roles 3. Effectively manage the Linux team to ensure obligations are met Apportion work according to ability and availability Ensure the staff are adequately trained and resourced Provide guidance and assistance based upon knowledge and experience. Keep track of work-in-hand and maintain a forward work plan for the section 4. Owning, planning and implementing new solutions to improve productivity and stability, taking proof-of-concepts (POC) into business-as-usual (BAU). 5. Providing systems knowledge and assistance to the rest of the IT team through collaboration and maintaining comprehensive, up-to-date documentation regarding systems and services within the postholder s areas of responsibility. 6. Liaising with 3rd party stakeholders to discuss improvements, changes and service. Autonomy Role is self-managed with regards to its day to day activities and decisions in the use of resources to resolve any given situation. The post holder is expected to be semi-autonomous and require minimal line manager interaction. Decision Making: Typical decisions required of post holder Testing and analysing results, planning implementation of changes, continuous improvements and relevant rollback plans. The post is, by and large, self managed in its day to day activities and decisions involving the use of resources (staff, financial, equipment). Resolution of any given situation, task or implementation is expected of the post without reference to line management - full autonomy is exercised in the deployment of resources. Typical decisions requiring approval by line manager/others The post holder will provide guidance to the Senior Management Team on requirements to maintain hardware and software to keep systems stable and reliable. This will include maintaining the required support from external vendors and/or suppliers. Consideration of the direction of the organisation on the position IT systems to ensure where possible they are flexible to react to change in the business future. The postholder will provide input into the strategic decisions on the delivery and support of the platforms which underpin the development of directorate s applications including, Science, HR, Estates, Finance, etc. Decisions made here will affect the direction of travel for not only the post holder s team but also that of the developers.
5 Communication and Relationships: Internally Externally The postholder needs to liaise with colleagues in IT to successfully identify improvements, execute changes, analyse, resolve and troubleshoot issues and problems, communicate with userbase regarding actions and schedules, as well as to gather accurate information and requirements to support decision making processes. The postholder will have minimal communication with external bodies, such as customers, vendors and/or other organisations.
