Benefits Reduce resources and operational cost Improve Passenger Experience Mitigate Risk of Failure Improve Reliability
TRACK: MINI-TRACK (RESILIENCY) WORKSHOP: 4 Title: Technology Resiliency - Part 1 Speaker: Julie Kenfield, Jacobsen/Daniels Associates Date: February 22, 2017
What might our future look like? Robotic suitcases Virgin Galactic s future supersonic jet, Boom Leo, SITA s baggage robot Biometric ID and profiling Screening train Scanning corridor ipad enabled ordering and payment
Our objectives as planners Meet our clients objectives Maximize use of existing facilities More space or better use of space Customer experience - improve passenger, vehicle and aircraft flow Ability to meet future requirements Reasonable expenditure Remodel/renovate Work-arounds Operational changes Increase revenue opportunities Maximize flexibility of new facilities Extend useful life of facility Save future operational and renovation costs Transform the passenger experience from ordeal to enjoyable Based on what we know now of tech and processes Understanding the passenger composition Using risk assessment for evaluating future process and tech changes
Different speeds of change and adoption Airports Take years from planning to implementation of facilities Rely on long-term financing so make long-term facility and cost commitments Generally cautious about implementing new or unproven systems Must consider how all passengers can adapt/adopt Systems integration desired Technology Generally quicker timeframe from inception to deployment Wide adoption can be months or years from introduction Faster obsolescence with change Typical first adopters are younger travelers or cutting edge users Stand-alone apps or platforms may not integrate with other systems
Technology has opposing impacts Baggage robots - improve customer service, but create other congestion? Passenger screening throughput improved, but space needs increased? Future screening technology streamline passenger movement, but change security perimeter and configuration of a checkpoint. Automated food delivery increase revenues, but change seating and circulation factors? Autonomous vehicles may reduce parking change curbfront requirements or create need for separate corrals
Resiliency includes planning for failure Evaluating risks What are the critical functions? Understanding history how did we do it before? What were previous failures and successes? How much are we willing to invest? Mitigation Strategies What is Plan B? Physical work-around for airport staff or passengers? Operational changes busing if an APM fails, manual screening of bags with BHS failure Workforce training Can other tech be used to help mitigate? Is there a case for analog back-up?
Future-proofing When it comes to future-proofing a terminal, it s around creating large, flexible spaces and considering even material choices and such things in the building that allow for easy adaptation and reconfiguration. Particularly in those areas that have evolved a lot in recent years and are most likely to continue to evolve, around the check-in processes, the security processes and as well around the key retail areas. Stewart Steeves, LaGuardia Gateway Partners CEO, Preparing for the Airport Terminal of the Future, Terminal Design, August 2016
Most planning is for existing facilities Column spacing, ceiling clearance Line of sight/wayfinding Infrastructure access/no pathways Connectivity and power Adaptations over the facility s life
Gating flexibility RJs to WBs Most planning is for existing facilities
Most planning is for existing facilities Gating flexibility RJs to WBs New transportation modes on existing landside Wayfinding and regulatory signage
Most planning is for existing facilities Gating flexibility RJs to WBs New transportation modes on existing landside Wayfinding and regulatory signage Narrow curbfronts Distracted pedestrians, confused and engaged with personal tech
How can we hit the target? Or at least get close...
As facility planners we need to understand and plan for the possible benefits and impacts of technology and its infrastructure on our clients facilities, operations, staffing and budgets.
As technology planners... Speakers for audio Older passenger not tech savvy Beacon technology What if systems fail? Dynamic signage and messaging Changing queue and passenger composition Who maintains the systems? IDF below...and implementers, we must understand the impact of tech on the physical facilities, operations, and costs. Raised floors for cabling access Who manages and stores data?
As airport operators... Robust IT backbone Easy access to concessions Power / data for dynamic signage and apps Automated cart / robot pathways & charging IDFs for tenant and airport systems Multiple wireless access points & audio Flexible holdrooms with outlets at seats Employee screening portals... we need to understand, evaluate and plan in terms of: Risk, Staffing, Airport investment and return, Sustainability, and Passengers expectations
