1 TERMS OF REFERENCE STORY COLLECTION TO SHOWCASE THE WORK OF WEZESHA JAMII (Phase 1) Prject Title: Prmting livelihds and inclusin f vulnerable wmen - dmestic wrkers and female small scale traders A prject c-funded by the Eurpean Unin

2 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT Oxfam is an internatinal develpment and humanitarian Nn-Gvernmental Organizatin that wrks with thers t vercme pverty and suffering. Oxfam has been perating in Kenya since The gegraphical fcus f ur prgrammes has been the urban areas mainly Nairbi city and Arid and Semi Arid Lands where we have been wrking with the pr and vulnerable grups t enhance their scial and ecnmic empwerment. Oxfam in partnership with the Natinal Organizatin f Peer Educatrs (NOPE), SITE Enterprise Prmtin and Yuth Alive Kenya (YAK!) received financial supprt frm the Eurpean Unin t strengthen sci-ecnmic empwerment f the infrmal ecnmy wrkers particularly the pr and vulnerable wmen dmestic wrkers and small scale traders wh live in Nairbi City s urban settlements mainly Mukuru, Kibera, Mathare, Krgch and Kawangware thrugh a fur years prject. Titled wezesha Jamii (cmmunity empwerment), this prject aims t strengthen sci-ecnmic status f the wmen dmestic wrkers and small scale traders by enhancing their life skills and business management skills, building strategic linkages and strengthening advcacy actins t increase their participatin in decisin making prcesses such as public planning and budgeting. This prject is implemented thrugh strategic partnerships and cllabratin with diverse stakehlders, bth state and nn-state. They include Nairbi City Cunty Gvernment, Kenya Unin f Dmestic Htels Educatin Institutins Hspital and Allied Wrkers Unin (KUDHEIHA), Kenya Industrial Research Develpment Institute (KIRDI), State Department f Labur and Scial Services, Natinal Hspital Insurance Fund, Natinal Industrial Training Authrity (NITA) and Natinal Scial Security Fund (NSSF). Others are Wrld Visin, Natinal Taxpayers Assciatin, The Institute f Scial Accuntability and Cncern Wrldwide. These strategic partnerships have been established in recgnitin f their centrality in addressing the challenges that affect the target grups and their dependants, ther wrkers in the infrmal ecnmy and neighburing cmmunities which include: lw and unreliable incmes, pr negtiatin skills, lack f favurable plicy envirnment, harassments, extrtin, arbitrary arrests and sexual vilatin, limited knwledge f their rights, limited access t markets and credit services, inadequate business skills. The direct beneficiaries are 10,000 wmen dmestic wrkers and 20,000 wmen small scale traders living in the five target settlements f Nairbi city. The ripple effect f the prject is expected t benefit millins f dmestic wrkers and small scale traders in Nairbi city and ther parts f Kenya. The prject frmally cmmenced n 29 th December 2014 and will be mid-way thrugh by 28 th December As part f the implementing partners internal cmmitment t assess ur perfrmance and bligatin t the Eurpean Unin, we will be dcumenting success stries and best practices fr shared learning and reprting purpses. Purpse This cnsultancy aims t prfessinally dcument existing gd practices, milestnes and success stries f the Wezesha Jamii prject in relatin t sci ecnmic strengthening, scial inclusin, access t rights and public participatin fr shared learning and influencing purpses. The cnsultant will als be expected t strengthen the capacity f the prject staff n dcumenting human-interest stries and case studies.

3 The final prducts will be used t inspire supprters t take actin t supprt the sci ecnmic status f the vulnerable wmen living in infrmal settlements. The cntent will als be used in fundraising and dnr reprting. The prducts will primarily be shared thrugh the Oxfam Kenya website, scial media channels such as Facebk, Twitter and YuTube. Additinally, they will als be shared with the dnr and partners fr further engagement; it will als be pitched t media utlets with the aim f reaching a wider external audience. Objectives 1. T dcument human interest stries that shwcase the wrk f the Wezesha Jamii prject in a way that engages target audiences and inspires actin. This will be dne by capturing change stries f real peple wh have benefitted frm the prject activities, the difference the prject has made and what ther supprt is expected 2. By sharing learning and experiences thrugh the cntent, demnstrate hw the Wezesha Jamii prject is wrking successfully with strategic partnerships, influencing and thrugh use f sustainable appraches t make a lasting difference in the lives f vulnerable and pr wmen living and depending n the infrmal ecnmy. 3. T strengthen the capacity f the prject team in dcumenting prject achievements in frm f human interest stries, case studies and still phtgraphy. Outcmes f the task 1. Capture and present real stries f wmen beneficiaries whse lives have been transfrmed thrugh engagement in the Wezesha Jamii prject. The cntent must be inspiring and empwering while at the same time prvking emtinal respnse and cnnectin frm the audiences 2. Shw the reality f the cntext in which Wezesha Jamii is wrking challenging, infrmal, dynamic and cmplex. The cntent needs t shw the actual challenges faced by the target wmen but fcus shuld be n the slutins that are bringing abut tangible psitive change in the lives f the beneficiaries. Have a gd balance between killer facts and the reality (quantitative and qualitative) 3. T highlight and illustrate the successful appraches Wezesha Jamii s prject has applied t achieve the results f the prject and sustainability fr replicatin. 4. By shwing the real life impact n the lives f the beneficiaries, the cntent shuld have a

4 call actin therefre helping the team in influencing and campaigning. Deliverables 7 stries, each 2 pages lng (Arial fnt size 12, 1.5 spacing) n the fur results areas and 20 high quality, well captined phtgraphs f beneficiaries f the different prgramme activities. The bk shuld include the prject summary and achievement inf graphic. The stries will be n the fllwing subject areas: 1. Tw stries abut wmen (1 dmestic wrker and 1 small scale trader) wh have benefitted frm the skills develpment interventin and linkage with financial and training institutins. The stry shuld highlight when engagement started, specific benefits, challenges faced, prgress and successes and the mst significant change at an individual, husehld and cmmunity level. 2. Tw stries abut wmen (1 dmestic wrker and 1 small scale trader) r grup f wmen wh have successfully increased their livelihd pprtunities and are receiving increased scial supprt as a result f the prject activities. 3. Tw stries abut target wmen (1 dmestic wrker and 1 small scale trader) right awareness and what they are ding t exercise their rights. The stries shuld als delve int hw they are wrking tgether t have a cllective vice and what has been achieved s far. 4. One stry n gvernment and stakehlder invlvement in delivering their respnsibilities with increased efficiency as a result f the prject activities. One and a half days training with prject staff which includes practical exercise n effective dcumentatin, where the cnsultant will share tips and tactics and supprt the field team in writing a stry each. The team will spend tw hurs f the first day n thery and the rest f the day in the field dcumenting stries. The stries will then be reviewed day after (half day). The cnsultant(s) will be expected t lead this exercise, edit and give feedback t the prject team n their stries fr further internal review, sign ff and publishing.

5 General Ntes fr cnsideratin Phts: All stries must be accmpanied with well-captined high quality phtgraphs. All cases must have well detailed backgrund infrmatin n family cmpsitin, including names, age, marital status, lcatin, ccupatin and specific supprt received frm the Wezesha Jamii prject. Beneficiary selectin will be dne in clse cllabratin with the field fficers. The cnsultant will be expected t mnitr the prgress ver the selected beneficiaries, implying that the cnsultancy will be rlled ut in phases that will be discussed and agreed at cntracting phase. Cnsent: The cnsultant(s) must adhere t the Oxfam cnsent plicy fr nging cmmunicatin activities. Time line The cnsultancy will take a perid f 15 wrking days fr this phase. Qualificatins The cnsultant(s) shuld have extensive experience in dcumentatin f change stries, case studies and prfessinal phtgraphy fr develpment rganisatins. Effective cmmunicatin skills. Change driven cmmunicatin appraches. Extensive understanding f vulnerable ppulatin dependent n the infrmal ecnmy in urban Nairbi. Technical capacity t cmplete the assignment within set timelines and budget. Creative and innvative with an eye fr detail. Ability/willingness t wrk in difficult and unpredictable circumstances. Gd rganizatinal skills.
