1 Head of Woodwind (Job Share) Temporary Fixed Term Position Responsible to: Joint responsibility shared with: Co-Responsibility for: Director of Music Head of Woodwind Woodwind Department Co-ordinator Woodwind Instrumental tutors Salary/Benefits: Commensurate with experience (& subject to QTS/Head of Department Responsibility Scales). Hours: Temporary contract, from January 2018* until July 2018, with the possibility of extension beyond this time period, if required. Normal hours of term-time working: 2 days per week (14 hrs), ideally worked Thursday/Friday, but subject to negotiation; 8.30am 4.30pm, (with one hour unpaid for lunch) but with some flexibility to alter hours in accordance with the needs of the Department. There will be regular need to work evening and weekends to support the performance and rehearsal programme of the students for which time off in lieu is given at the discretion of the Director of Music. NB: The initial temporary fixed term period of work covers a maximum of 22 weeks of term time work (subject to start date). This is the pro rata equivalent of a standard 36 week academic teaching year. This role does observe early finishes in line with the students term time (e.g. free weekend early finishes etc). Normal hours of non-term time working: As needed in order to complete the requirements of the role, including preparation and planning time as required. (NB: any hours worked non-term time can be worked to an individual s flexibility and (if) any prescribed working hours are required, these will be arranged by negotiation and at the discretion of the Director of Music. Holiday Pay/Allocation: Holiday pay (based on the pro-rata of the full time equivalent of 28 days leave per year) is payable within the agreed salary figure. Holidays must be taken during the School holiday periods and are deemed to have been taken at the earliest opportunity

2 *(or the earliest date possible upon completion of recruitment checks if appointed to an external candidate i.e. c.1 month from interview). Context: The Music Department is at the very heart of the School and is the centre of all students musical activities and non-academic studies. The Department has a lively, busy atmosphere, and aims to deliver the best possible musical opportunities for all its students. The Woodwind Department (sitting alongside the Brass & Percussion, String, Keyboard, Jazz, Vocal and Composition departments) directly supports and nurtures the musical needs of its students, aged Directing and supporting the work of its 23 woodwind specific tutors, and collaborating across the departments, the students bespoke musical education, from their chamber and orchestral training to their external performance engagements and masterclass/assessment activities, are all shaped and guided directly by the roles of The Heads of Woodwind. The Head of Woodwind (Job Share) is a new role supporting the temporary reduced working hours of the current Head of Woodwind. The new position will play a key part in jointly managing the day to day operations, activities and staff of its department and maintaining consistency in the absence of the Head of Woodwind. Both Heads of Woodwind work closely and in collaboration with the Head of Brass & Percussion. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Student support: to take a key role in supporting students musical (and related pastoral) progress and, in turn, ensure each student remains connected to the School s wider support network. Central to this role is the ability to connect related staff from across the academic, musical and pastoral disciplines to meet the needs of individual students. To nurture, on every level, students musical development throughout their time at the School. Teaching: to undertake instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching, as required, and within suitability of own instrumental discipline. Line Management: co-responsibility for the Woodwind Department Coordinator and the specialist Woodwind Tutors of the Department. Monitor and manage workloads and associated allocation of students to teachers maintaining the best possible musical fit for both parties. Contribute towards HR support for tutors and oversee ongoing recruitment as required. Implement any associated performance management, if required, and work proactively to ensure the highest levels of teaching standards are consistently achieved. Parental engagement: act as the main intermediary between instrumental tutors and woodwind students parents as necessary. Resolve student musical matters and ensure positive and consistent relationships are maintained with parents throughout. Department planning: carry out macro and micro planning for all activities within the department. Areas of focus may include anything from overall student allocations with tutors, to personnel required for chamber and large ensembles, to allocating ensembles for performances or scheduling the annual programme of student assessments, masterclasses

3 and special project activities. Ensure all planning is well co-ordinated and liaised through to all related parties, delegating aspects of delivery to the Woodwind Department Co-ordinator as required. Evaluation: ensure ongoing evaluation of the Department s activities. Proactively implement improvement and modifications to the methods of the Department, within the resources available and with consultation with the Director of Music. Conducting/Musical Direction: undertake chamber and large ensemble conducting as required for both rehearsal and performances. Lead music block performance class activity for all year groups, as required. Profile and report writing: complete all formal student progress assessment processes as required and by due deadlines; help ensure that departmental instrumental tutors do likewise. Assessments: undertake student technical and performance assessments as required. Financial: maintain resources in accordance with allocated budgets; provide projected costs/budgets as required for forthcoming departmental activity and special projects. Adhere to the School s policies: ensure that no planned (or sanctioned) Departmental activity ever puts students into a position of harm or vulnerability, or any situation which works counter to the School s policies. OTHER DUTIES: Music Courses: to provide musical support (both formal rehearsal taking as required and informal sectional advice and guidance) throughout each of the School s termly orchestral Music Courses. Staffing of concerts: attend, in an often combined musical and pastoral role, external and internal concerts to support the performing students. Administration and related communications: ensure all administrative and communication based tasks necessary to undertake the above Job Description are carried out in a timely and efficient fashion. Auditions: to undertake advice and main auditions for prospective students during their application process to the School, plus consultation lessons as required. Ensure a balanced assessment of potential students suitability to the School is given in written and oral reports as required. Support the Director of Music in musical matters, as required. Booking and fee negotiation for external guest musicians and clinicians, as demanded by the Department s musical programme. Attend meetings: attend regular Music Management, Concerts, Orchestral and Injury Prevention meetings as required. This role is also expected to attend Whole Teaching Staff meetings, related teaching staff meetings, plus mandatory inset training as required. OTHER DUTIES: General liaison, as appropriate, with any external contractors, and members of the school outreach team, as required. Any other duties as required by the Director of Music and the Head. NB: the delineation of responsibilities between the current Head of Woodwind, and the new Head of Woodwind (job share) will need to be reviewed dependent upon on the specialisms and working arrangements of both individuals. Some aspects of the above Job Description may therefore not be required during the period of temporary employment, and this may only be established once appointed. This job description is therefore subject to ongoing flexible review as required.

5 Head of Woodwind (Job Share) Person Specification The successful candidate for this role will be both a highly experienced teacher and performer of national reputation. With a genuine commitment and proven experience of supporting the holistic musical development of young people, they will have management level experience within a musical setting, and will possess excellent emotional and personal intelligence. Coupled with exemplary communication skills, the successful candidate for this role will clearly exhibit an ability to efficiently share workloads with the current Head of Woodwind, and to work together in a flexible but cohesive relationship. Person Specification (Qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience) Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in Music or Qualifications related subject. Qualified teacher status or related teacher training. / Experience Teaching/coaching experience to the highest of levels: wide range of demonstrable experience at a national level and within a woodwind discipline. Broad and wide-ranging classical music performance experience, from within a woodwind discipline, and demonstrable at a national/international level. Working with children and young people (within the 8-18 age range is desirable), with proven experience in nurturing their musical development at all stages. Experience of managing and supporting professional relationships with students parents. Ensuring balance between the needs of students, their parents, and the School, and dealing with issues that arise in a sensitive manner. Significant conducting experience of small and large ensembles to professional performance standards. Experience working at a management level position within an education or music based environment (at least 5 years experience would be desirable). Line-management and staff performance management. Proven experience of managing and dealing with the practical logistics of music making. Able to understand and balance musical needs with available operational resources. Budget management. Knowledge Strong network of contacts within the professional classical music landscape.
