1 JOB TITLE: Development Instructor LOCATION: Dundee INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCE S TRUST Youth charity The Prince s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. It supports 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. The Trust s programmes give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by The Prince s Trust move into work, education or training. The Prince of Wales s charity has helped 825,000 young people since 1976 and supports over 100 more each day. Our Vision: Every young person should have the chance to succeed. The Trust works with around 55,000 young people across the UK. We support young people through teams of staff, volunteers and delivery partners in three English regions and offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each of the regions and countries has a Director and in the countries they are supported by Country Advisory Councils, which are made up of non-executive volunteers. The Trust supports young people through a range of programmes, and operates a network of centres and partners from where Princes Trust programmes are delivered. Adventurous Activity is a core component of the Fairbridge programme and features as one of the most effective Personal and Social Development mediums across our other programmes.

2 RESPONSIBLE TO: Adventurous Activities Manager, with day to day supervision from Senior Development Instructors RESPONSIBLE FOR: The Development Instructor is responsible for the development of young people through a variety of sessions and courses using adventurous and outdoor mediums. Development Instructors may also be expected training other PT staff as competent assists for activities in which they hold relevant NGB awards as well as support, coach and mentoring volunteers as directed by the Senior Development Instructor. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES To plan and deliver high quality adventurous sessions and activities To work with Programme Executives and partners to plan and deliver adventurous activity sessions which compliment programme as specified in Princes Trust programme toolkits To identify partners and service providers who can enhance Adventurous Activity through provision of appropriate sites and facilities To assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring of volunteers and partners where appropriate To maintain accurate and up to date paper and electronic records KEY CONTACTS: Fairbridge programme staff Head of FB/GS AA Regional Instructors Programme Support Co-ordinator in the Centre Service/Site providers and delivery partners UK Head of Adventurous Activities Technical Advisors Central Operations Team Other Head Office Functions and Departments as required BUDGET: Responsible for allocated delivery expenditure including the hire of facilities and accommodation, resources, rations, and other day to-day running costs.

3 Responsible for maintaining and auditing allocated resources, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and with support from the Senior Development Instructor. Responsible for managing own expenses within the financial management guidelines and allocated budget DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Ensure delivery complies with; Princes Trust Standard Operating Procedures, the stages and processes outlined in the relevant programme toolkit, the minimum quality standards and any additional contractual obligations 2. Design appropriate sessions and courses to meet the needs of young people on programme in liaison with Princes Trust Programme Executives and / or Delivery Partners. Assess and evaluate courses and activities, and modify course design and delivery as appropriate 3. Assist with the sourcing of opportunities and development of relationships with other organisations, or service providers, to support a wide range of appropriate adventurous and outdoor activities within programmes 4. Lead the delivery of adventurous activity courses to young people. 5. Deliver designated accreditation courses in line with agreed targets within the Country/Region Business Plan; supporting young people to attain accreditation where possible 6. Build effective relationships with young people and constructively work with young people s behaviour using Prince s Trust programme theories of learning 7. Complete adventurous activity session/course reports and support programme executives and / or partner with relevant sections of young people s Personal Development Plans, and work collaboratively to identify, monitor and evaluate the development needs and progression opportunities of young people. 8. Assist with ensuring effective communication and flow of information between Development Instructors and programme executives or delivery partner. 9. Maintain and audit allocated equipment, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Adventurous Activities Standard Operating Procedures with support from the Senior

4 Development Instructor. Input into the equipment replacement plan by identifying, prioritising and sourcing equipment and facilities within allocated budget 10. Comply with The Prince s Trust health and safety policy by supervising all young people to ensure their welfare and safety is maintained whilst participating on Princes Trust activity and through promoting a culture of health and safety within the team, carrying out risk assessments on activities 11. Assist with recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers and staff 12. Assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring Princes Trust Executives, Volunteers and partners carrying out observations on the practice, supporting the assessment of competence to assist on Adventurous Activities 13. Support the implementation of multiple external funding contracts or initiatives (local and national) to ensure requirements and outputs are achieved 14. Maintain accurate and up to date records, paper and electronic, as required by The Trust or external funding contracts and in line with The Trust s data protection policy 15. Comply with all Prince s Trust young people policies and procedures 16. Carry out other duties as may reasonably be required by The Trust, including deputising as appropriate on activities relevant to area of responsibility and attending all necessary internal/external training courses and management/steering group meetings

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION The successful candidate will be experienced in working with young people from The Trust s target group and dealing with challenging behaviour. They must have the ability to facilitate personal and social development of young people through adventurous activity and outdoor learning, and should be able to demonstrate that they understand the challenges that face disadvantaged young people in their area. They will also have an enthusiasm and passion for the work of The Prince s Trust and a conviction to deliver high positive outcomes for the young people we support. Criteria Essential Desirable Skills and Knowledge: A minimum of two NGB qualifications from: Summer Mountain Leader assessed; Single Pitch Award; UKCC L2 Paddle Sports Coach or equivalent; British Cycling L2 Mountain Biking or equivalent. Skills or Training evidence in a third adventurous/outdoor activity First Aid qualification with outdoor focus and relevant to other qualifications (BASP, REC, etc.) D1 (+E) driving licence with current clean driving licence. (Training can be provided) Further qualifications in combined rock and water activities. Orienteering Coach IOL Bushcraft (or Equivalent) Food Hygiene awareness qualification Strong understanding of the challenges young people within The Trust s target groups face Ability to effectively develop rapport with young people and establish appropriate relationships Ability to deliver high quality group sessions in three different adventurous activities Excellent knowledge of health and safety practices and processes Knowledge of local provision for disadvantaged young people and the local community Knowledge of local sites & locations to deliver outdoor learning safely Knowledge of risk management procedures Good planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities Good verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills
