(grade c of Mind s salary scales) Hours of work 35 hours per week Based at Stratford, London Length of contract Fixed term to March 2015 Purpose of the job Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales. We won t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets the support they need and the respect they deserve. We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We also campaign to raise awareness, improve services and promote understanding. The Digital Communications Officer will support the Digital Communications Manager to deliver a wide range of integrated digital communications so that Mind may inform, inspire, involve and influence its internal, external and stakeholder audiences, deliver targets in line with organisational strategy, and continue to raise Mind s profile. You will be expected to develop, implement and evaluate digital communications; manage projects to ensure that work is completed on time, within budget, and to high standards; and act as a brand guardian to ensure branding and brand values are applied consistently. Success of this post relies on the ability to manage one s own workload and run integrated or discrete projects, whilst working effectively as part of a team. Scope of the job The Communications Unit sits within Mind s External Relations department which brings together all Mind s campaigning, policy, information, legal, media and press work. Our unit s key purpose is to develop a dynamic role for communications within Mind and ensure our work and messages are co-ordinated to increase Mind s impact and profile. You will work closely with the Digital Communications Manager to achieve this across Mind s online presence and activities. S/he will develop close working links with the Communications Officers, Head of Communications and other members of the team. You will also work closely with staff across Mind, the network of local Minds, Mind Cymru and partner organisations. 2 Mind aims to ensure that the needs and interests of mental health service users, women, black and minority ethnic communities, disabled people, lesbians, gay men, transgender, bisexuals and people of ages are reflected in all activities. The Digital Communications Officer is expected to contribute to this aim. Key responsibilities 1. To develop, implement, monitor and evaluate digital communication plans and campaigns, products and content in consultation with clients or stakeholder partners as directed by the Communications Manager. 2. To monitor Mind s social media activity, as directed by the Digital Communications Manager and in line with agreed policies and procedures. 3. To engage with and develop relationships with audiences online with respect and sensitivity, as directed by the Digital Communications Manager and in line with agreed policies and procedures. 4. To monitor Mind s brand online, as directed by the Digital Communications Manager and in line with agreed policies and procedures. To give advice on branding and ensure branding and brand values are applied consistently throughout digital communications from Mind and the network of local associations. 5. To implement audience-focused digital communications activity across a range of channels. 6. To produce, commission, edit and publish digital content in line with the digital style guide and processes. 7. To provide training and guidance to internal clients using digital communications, systems and tools. To update the digital manual and be a champion for the digital systems across Mind; providing guidance on appropriate communications channels available and practical support in initiating digital work. 8. To produce monthly web analytics to assess whether the digital activity is on track to meet Key Performance Indicators. 9. To project manage the production of digital products, such as website developments and HTML s, as directed by the Digital Communications Manager and in line with agreed policies and procedures. 10. As directed by the Digital Communications Manager, contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of a range of fully integrated digital communications so that Mind may inform, inspire, influence and involve internal, external and stakeholder audiences, deliver targets in line with organisational strategy, and continue to raise its profile. 11. Write, edit and proof-read material for online communications to an excellent standard, ensuring consistency and compliance with Mind s key communications messages, quality standards, branding, design, accessibility and textual style guidelines. 12. To research, brief, negotiate with, and manage external suppliers and partners when necessary. 13. Ensure that the Digital team s work involves people with direct experience of mental health problems from a full range of diverse backgrounds, and that appropriate advice and support is given to service users involved with Mind s communications work. 15. To provide out of hours cover, particularly at weekends (on rota system) in monitoring Mind s social media activity and take action as directed/in accordance with guidance. 16. Working with people experiencing mental health problems and dealing with them tactfully and sensitively. 17. Undertake other duties that may from time to time be necessary, that are compatible with the nature and grade of this post. Expectations A) To attend and contribute to team meetings, supervision and appraisal process and training (identified as appropriate for the role). B) To ensure that all responsibilities and activities within this post are consistent with the terms and spirit of Mind s Equal Opportunities policy. C) To occasionally travel to meetings in England and Wales, which may occasion the need for an overnight stay. D) To occasionally work unsociable hours, e.g. attending evening or weekend meetings, monitoring social media out of hours or travel outside London. 4 Mind Person specification: Digital Communications Officer Essential criteria 1. Demonstrable experience in a digital communications role, to include experience of achieving desired targets, monitoring social media, using a CMS system and reporting on impact. 2. Proven ability to write and edit highly engaging copy for different audiences across online communications. 3. Demonstrable understanding of effective digital communications and a willingness to keep up to date with technologies and developments. 4. Demonstrable experience of website and intranet/extranet development and management. 5. Demonstrable experience of maintaining and protecting an organisation s brand in a variety of formats. 6. Ability to work proactively using initiative, to prioritise work and meet deadlines with welldeveloped time management skills. 7. Experience of project management, including delivering to timescales and budgets. 8. Excellent IT skills, including using Content Management Systems, marketing systems, social media tools, HTML and web analytics. 9. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and with demonstrable skills in being clear and concise. 10. Ability to work as part of a team and with other stakeholders in a collaborative way and using a partnerships approach. 11. Experience of working with vulnerable groups and being sensitive to their needs. 12. Willingness and ability to work unsocial hours, particularly at weekends (on rota system) to monitor social media activity and taking action as required. 13. 5 Mind (National Association for Mental Health) Additional information Digital Communications Officer Interview and travel expenses Mind is prepared to pay travel expenses for those asked to attend an interview to a maximum of 175. However, the cheapest form of travel must always be used other than in exceptional circumstances in which case the agreement of the Head of Human Resources must be sought. Conditions of employment In the light of legislation [Section 8 Asylum and Immigration Act, January 1997], as a condition of being able to commence employment with Mind, the successful candidate will be required to provide documentation to prove that they are able to work in the UK. Such documents will include one or more of the following, as appropriate: National Insurance number Birth certificate or British passport Certificate of registration, or naturalisation as a British citizen Passport or documentation evidencing citizenship of an EEA country Probation The appointment is subject to a probation period. Salary Grade C of Mind's salary scales. Starting salary 24,670 per annum plus 2,992 per annum geographical weighting. Hours of work/flexible working hours A standard 35 hours per week within 8.00am to 7.30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding one hour break for lunch. Mind operates a flexible working hours scheme whereby members of staff can vary the time they start and finish work within the parameters agreed by their line managers. However, the core period of 10.00am to 4.00pm (excluding lunch break) are the times during which you must be at work. Time off will be given for work outside the standard hours. Overtime is not payable.
