2 Monday 5 th October 89 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime cattle to 206ppk and 1449 Barren cows to 151ppk and 1159 Prime Cattle Quality finished Charolais heifers from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock topped the sale reaching 206ppk & 1413 whilst Keith Rowell of Crockernwell saw his Charolais female sell for 199ppk & realise Another fine run of continental cross prime from John Canham of Hatherleigh rose to 195ppk for both Limousin and Charolais steers as a 29 month old Blue heifer from Anne Brown of Ottery St Mary totalled 1174 (187ppk). Best over thirty month cattle sold to 196ppk & 1388 for Keith Rowell with a Charolais steer. Barren Cows Young South Devons from Jim Irish of Aveton Gifford sold to 151 & 150ppk whilst top total price was 1159 (129ppk) given for a 900kg Angus barrener from A & I Westlake of Branscombe. Limousin cows ran to 145ppk ( 988) for Phillip Dennis of North Tawton and 121ppk ( 935) for Brian Vallance of Bickington whilst more South Devon cows, this time from Harvey Brothers of Roborough, Plymouth sold to 134 & 130ppk. Other prices of note were Angus to 130ppk for the Mildon family of Cadbury, Simmentals to 120ppk for Bruce Ellett of Exmouth and Devon cows to 108ppk for Peter Howlett of Kingswear. Best Holstein Friesian barreners sold to 109ppk & 894 for Robert Drake of Shillingford Abbot. This means that beef and lamb from the region that meets the specific criteria as set out below, is eligible to carry the PGI logo and can be badged as West Country and promoted on the basis of their rearing environment. Born, reared and finished within the West Country Region comprising of the six counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire Are no more than 12 months of age (Lamb Only) Are from a Farm Assured holding (Information from your Farm Assurance assessment may be required to check the PGI eligibility of the farm) During their lifetime have been fed on minimum 70% forage based diet and have received a suitable period of grazing, typically 2 months. (Supplements may have been fed at weaning and finishing stage and ingredients and purchasing records have been maintained). For your stock to be sold as West Country Beef & Lamb under this scheme we must have a completed and signed declaration which can be found on the bottom of our Sheep Entry Forms or from the Market Office please ensure you have this with you when unloading. 3 PRIME LAMB 1442 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer A larger and generally better quality line up of lambs were again a difficult trade. Best butchers lambs in plentiful supply, with a cracking run of three quarter bred Texel & Charollais crosses from Mark Harvey of Slapton dominating the top prices selling to 73, 72.80, 72.50, and 70 all for 46-50kg ( ppk). Over-weights sold to 71 for C Squier of Newton St Cyres and 70 for Derek Arnold of Morchard Road, family of the late John Mead of South Brent and twice for Dave Pollard of Black Dog whose were 54kgs at 130ppk. 52kgs to 70 again from C Squier while 51kgs sold to for Roy Adams of Talaton and again for Dave Pollard. Other 48kgs to (140ppk) again for Roy Adams as more 46kgs sold to 66 & (143 & 140ppk) for Tim Cunningham of Tavistock and & 65 (142 & 141ppk) for Martin Quick of North Tawton. Some great 45kg sorts saw Charollais crosses reach or a sale topping 157ppk for John Attree of Harbertonford who also had 44kgs at 66 (150ppk), two pens of 45kg Texel & Berrichon crosses from Derek Arnold sold at & 66 (150 & 147ppk) and another pen of Weight No s Fwd Auctioneer Russell Steer Sale commencing at 9.30am Top Average s Per s Per P.P.K P.P.K Head Head PRIME LAMBS (-3.70) (+2.80) 45kgs from Chris Collins of Chumleigh sold at 66 and his 43kgs achieved 63. A single 41kg lamb from David Pengelly of Cullompton climbed to 64 (156ppk) and two pens of the same weight from John Baxter & family of Exwick sold at 62 & (both 151ppk). A funny line up of lighter weights, which included many rams, over thick sorts and generally undesirable stores sold to a trade that reflected this. 38kgs to for GC Sage of Sidmouth, for Cyril Pearse of Scorriton and 54 for MJ Gibbons of Tipton St John, a price matched by AB Davies of St Anns Chapel with 37kgs and 36kgs sold to for Jim Irish of Aveton Gifford. SQQ of 142ppk is two pence better on the week. 476 CULL EWES & 17 RAMS/WETHERS (-0.50) (-2.50) Cull ewes & rams remain a depressed trade compared to previous weeks/months. Best to 70 for both TE & J Middleton of Ashreigney and the family of the late John Mead of South Brent. Rams lacked quality but topped at 58 for a Longwool from Nigel & Tissa Haley of Buckfastleigh. 5 Vacancies at the Exeter Livestock Centre Vacancies at the Exeter Livestock Centre Market Accounts Clerks We are currently recruiting Market Accounts Clerks to assist in the busy Exeter Livestock Centre and various other sites including on farm sales. Applicants must be computer literate, possess the ability to work under pressure and have a full UK driving licence and own transport. Working Hours: This is a zero hours contract and the successful applicants must be available to work on Mondays and Fridays. Additional midweek hours maybe supplied. Livestock Handlers Required We are looking for additional Livestock Handlers to join our team to work at the Exeter Livestock Market and possibly some of our other busy livestock markets. Likely duties will include loading and unloading of stock and assisting with the movement of stock through the market. The successful candidate will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn. A background knowledge in agriculture and handling livestock is an advantage. Own transport and driving licence required. Working Hours: This is a zero hours contract and the successful candidates must be available to work on Mondays and Fridays.
