2 Invitation We cordially invite you to join us for the 34th Annual Cement and Concrete Science Conference, hosted by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Sheffield. The conference will provide an opportunity for academic researchers, students and industrialists to meet and discuss their research on topics including: - Hydration and microstructure of Portland cement and blended cements - Alternative binders and their application as cements and concretes - Durability testing of concretes based on Portland and non-portland cements - Structural and thermal performance of concrete materials - Waste re-use in cements and concretes - Cementitious materials for nuclear waste applications - Sustainability issues related to cement and concrete production and utilisation Call for Abstracts Abstracts (up to 200 words) are now being accepted for both oral and poster presentations; these should be submitted by ccs2014@sheffield.ac.uk. 3 Workshop on Waste Cementation 17 September 2014 Invitation Many modern industries produce waste streams which can be most effectively treated by solidification in cements, and many are also tasked with treating large volumes of legacy wastes resulting from historical operations. These wastes are often hazardous due to toxic and/or radioactive components, complex in chemical and physical nature, and reactive. This requires the application of high-level science in the selection, design and implementation of effective cementation treatment processes. This Workshop will bring together leading practitioners from industry and academia, spanning many fields of waste management (nuclear, manufacturing, mining and others), to cross-fertilise scientific outcomes and insights between these diverse fields of activity. Key topics will include: - Selection of the best cement type for a given waste stream - Design of novel cementing systems - Characterisation of wasteform performance - Implementation of cementation processes - Storage and final disposal of cemented wasteforms Location The Workshop will be held on 17 Sep 2014, in Mappin Hall, University of Sheffield. This date is immediately following the 34th Annual Cement and Concrete Science conference ( and attendees are encouraged to register jointly for the two events, or registration solely for the Workshop is possible if preferred. Call for Abstracts Abstracts (up to 200 words) are now being accepted for both oral and poster presentations; these should be submitted by ccs2014@sheffield.ac.uk. Please state whether your submission is for the main Cement and Concrete Science conference, or for the Workshop on Waste Cementation or if you would like to prepare a poster for presentation at both events, that is welcomed also. Written papers are optional, but encouraged, for the Workshop; these will be published as a supplementary section in the Cement and Concrete Science conference proceedings, and will be available to all delegates at the Workshop. Full paper submission deadline will be Monday 14 July Delegates who wish to present a poster on topics related to waste cementation are very welcome to display their poster at both events; please indicate with your abstract submission if you would like to do this.
