2 1. Background of Asian G-WADI Asian G-WADI was established in March 2005 based on consensus and collective understanding of representatives from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to confront the urgent need for increased regional co-operation for sustainable development of arid and semi-arid zones. G-WADI s primary aim of building an effective global community through international cooperation, also applies to Asian G-WADI, with specific emphasis on Asian water issue. Asian G-WADI has formulated guidelines for proposing one or more basins as G-WADI pilot basins in a country, which can contribute to the knowledge base for the region.

Support online news updating Fetch Asian water news from SAHRH News Watch Automatic e- notification After 03/08 the domain asian-gwadi.org were maliciously hijacked. Move to a temporary domain asiangwadi.westgis.ac.cn. Failed to get the name back after many efforts. Stop updating after 05/08. Cooperation, exchange and capacity building Professor Sorooshian awarded 2014 Einstein Professorship of the CAS, and is also a visiting professor to the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( ) Our Asian G-WADI network researchers won the CAS visiting fellowship for researchers from developing countries: Prof. Shamshagul Mashstayeva from Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan (June to December, 2014) and Prof. Buyankhishig Nemer from Mongolia University of Science and Technology (September to December, 2013) Our Asian G-WADI network young researchers won CAS-TWAS President s PhD Fellowship: Mr. Zain Nawaz and Ms. Akynbekkyzy Meerzhan from Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan are studying PhD programme in the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Institute (2015-now), Mr. Shuakat Ali from Pakistan is now studying his PhD programme in the Institute of Atmosphere Physics (2012-now)

Project cooperation Development of adaptive water resources management in response to extreme hydrological events in Heihe River Basin, Northwestern China, Jan to Aug 2013, YingChun Ge, Zhuotong Nan, R. Jayakumar Within the framework of WINGA-ASPAC International Hydrological Programme: Water Interoperability Networks for Global Change Adaption funded by Japan Fund in trust Aiming to investigate and implement adaption approach to the hydrological extreme events such as flood and drought, particularly in arid and semi-arid zones via G-WADI

24 7. Asian G-WADI future work Build a database by working with authorities and addressing access issues How to undertake modelling in data scarce environments? How to assess data quality? More information on measuring and modelling groundwater recharge? Developing links between technical/modelling assessment and community/end-users. Raising awareness amongst the community? How to manage stakeholder engagement across all scales Think about case study tutorials that can be downloaded from website together with accessible software packages (e.g., demonstration versions or public domain) Need to train trainers G-WADI online discussion group / ? Facilitate interaction and joint projects across countries but how to fund e.g., approach to UNESCO? Use workshops as a project planning activity?

29 Chu River Basin, Kyrgyzstan 73 24'16'' ~ 77 04'12'' E, and 41 45'10'' ~ 43 11'51'' N. The capital of the Kyrgyz Republic and the main industrial center Bishkek, is situated in the Chu Basin. The recorded population is (as of 01/01/05), real population is much more. The average altitude of the catchment area is 2840 m.

30 Gomti River Basin, India Study area comprises catchment of Gomtiupto Jaisamand Lake. Catchment Area 1787 km 2 Hilly terrain belonging to Aravalli chain. Ground elevations range from 300 to 650 m above msl approx. Population 375,000

32 Taleghan-Hashtgerd River Basin, Iran Hashtgerd Basin lies in the south hillside of Alborz mountain It is one of the Shour River sub basins in the Savojbolagh township of Tehran province The highest height is Kahar peak with 4180m and the lowest one is 1000 m of sea level in the Shour River fan Basin area : ha with 10 sub basin Population: people

33 Vakhsh River Basin, Tajikistan The Vakhsh is 691 km long, has a basin area of The Vakhsh River has 6276 tributaries and 20 lakes covering the total area of 4 km 2. More than 40 % of its flow comes during July to September from thawed glaciers. The mean discharge at the head structure of the Vakhsh main canal is 2273 m 3 per second, the maximum discharge is about 4500 m 3 per second, and the minimum discharge is 1420 m 3 per second. March to October flow constitutes about 87 % of annual flow.
