FUNDAMENTALS Work Environment Located at MAYSAR in Fitzroy and Kingsbury, and the Minajalku Centre in Thornbury. Working Conditions This is a 12-month full time 1 EFT Contracted position with the possibility of becoming ongoing. Evening and weekend work may be required. Flexitime provisions apply in consultation with line manager. Salary is range $57,620 to $62,342 based on experience and qualifications, plus employer superannuation contributions of 9.5% and 17.5% leave loading. Salary packaging applies. An extra 3 leave days are granted to all Whitelion Staff during the Christmas period A probationary period of 6 months will apply. 2 PURPOSE Vision We stand for: The Courage to Choose a Better Future The TIDDAS Program is part of the Deadlylions Team and operates with in the following partnerships: Murrenda Aboriginal Community Care Ltd, is a separately incorporated company of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress which is wholly controlled by Aboriginal people. In its operation this company will address the disproportionately high levels of social disadvantage within the Aboriginal community, using a holistic approach to service delivery. Murrenda aims to achieve equitable outcomes for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community by delivering culturally appropriate programs and initiatives. Melbourne Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation (MAYSAR) is a well-regarded and well-recognised community centre in Fitzroy. For over 20 years MAYSAR has offered a community gym, youth services, health promotion, housed physical education and sporting groups, provided community support and a public meeting place. In 2014 MAYSAR and Whitelion entered into a shared services arrangement. It also joins together the expertise and passion both organisations have for assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) young people to live meaningful lives for the benefit of themselves, their family and community. Whitelion Inc is a non-profit organisation that supports disadvantaged young people. Whitelion s mission is to build meaningful relationships and create opportunities that enable highly vulnerable and high risk young people to reconnect with society and reach their full potential. Whitelion provides youth focussed, culturally and gender specific programs including mentoring, employment, role modelling and specialist outreach. The TIDDAS Program Coordinators role has been developed to engage a specific group of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women living in the Northern region of Melbourne to link them in to local services. These young women are at-risk of entering or becoming entrenched in the Criminal Justice System &/or disconnected from their culture. The position is to engage with the target group - specifically young women and provide advocacy and support to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the northern region through the creation of local networks and structures that are appropriate to the needs of young people and their families. 5 KEY RESULT AREAS (KRAs) To engage at-risk and disconnected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth and link them into local services To promote healthy lifestyles and positive life choices To encourage community engagement and participation Key Tasks Provide positive cultural role modelling Operate the program in a variety of settings and to cover a range of hours as agreed with the Aboriginal Services Manager Deliver joint projects with local service providers Assist with the delivery of recreation, leisure, sport and art programs that are designed to be initiated by the target group Facilitate access to a range of leadership, cultural and recreational opportunities to develop personal/work skills and confidence Refer young people to programs run by Murrenda, Whitelion and the wider community which include cultural and spiritual awareness programs, employment and mentoring Contribute to the creation of opportunities for at- risk Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to meet and share experiences with the Koori and broader community Assist to develop programs that are led by young people and that benefit the wider Koori and non-koori community Provide leadership opportunities for at risk young people to dispel negative stereotypes and perceptions in the broader community To work towards the reduction of the extent and incidence of antisocial and criminal behaviours To encourage and support young people to link into employment and education To provide meaningful engagement and activities to contribute to the reduction of incidences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people engaging in antisocial behaviours Undertake positive community projects with local key stakeholders designed to build cooperation and good community relations Explore barriers to education and employment within the target group Advocate for the establishment of culturally specific interventions for young people in areas such as employment and education. 6 To undertake a variety of administrative tasks including case notes, client monitoring forms, SYARD data base records and other tasks as directed by the Aboriginal Services Manager Ensure all data is recorded on SYARD (Whitelion s data base) within 48 hours after an event with and or for a young person To assist with the maintenance of your office space To participate in a cleaning roster associated with both Centres and to assist with the setup and pack up of centre activities. Key Selection Criteria EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS Relevant qualifications for the social welfare sector SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Demonstrated commitment and ability to work effectively with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, their families and communities. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Victoria s Child protection and Youth Justice Systems and an understanding of the needs of young people involved in these systems. Demonstrated commitment and ability to work effectively with disadvantaged young people, their families and communities Demonstrated case management experience, knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and an understanding of the issues affecting them in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Excellent verbal and written skills in addition to a high level of interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills which allow you to build rapport and trust with various stakeholders Ability to work independently and as part of a team Willingness to undertake a police check and Working with Children Check.
