1 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Business Development Specialist - Law SCHOOL/OFFICE: Career Development Centre CLASSIFICATION LEVEL: Bond Level 5 DATE POSITION CLASSIFIED: May 2010 This position is first and foremost with Bond University and although this position is described as operating within a section of the university, it is a fundamental requirement of your position that the best interests of the university must be your priority at all times. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The focus of this role is to develop and expand relationships with local, interstate and regional employers within the Legal industry, including the SME market to facilitate internship, work experience and PLT placements, part time and clerkship/graduate employment opportunities for students, graduates and alumni. The incumbent will be expected to travel independently. This role will provide specialist Business Development and placement facilitation for Law students. Accordingly, the incumbent will be required: To initiate, negotiate, maintain and manage effective, lasting relationships with domestic employers through marketing and promotion of the University and its graduates To facilitate, negotiate and secure local and regional internship, work experience, PLT placements, part time and graduate employment opportunities for Bond students, graduates and alumni Service top-tier Law firms nationally to provide pathways for students into clerkship and graduate programs Provide Careers Staff, Faculty, University Staff and students with up to date information on employment opportunities and labour market trends Implement a proactive and coordinated program promoting Bonds quality teaching, degrees and graduates to local and regional employers Liaise with Faculty staff to ensure a collaborative service is provided and information and materials available are consistent To promote opportunities to students via Careers Website, Facebook and other methods To keep up to date records on all industry engagement via Scout Provide support to CDC Careers events and activities Promote Careers events to employers and host employers on campus for presentations and networking opportunities with students
2 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to: Pro Vice Chancellor (Student and Academic Support) Director, Career Development Centre National Business Development Manager Business Development Specialist - Law SELECTION CRITERIA: A relevant undergraduate degree (Marketing, Business, Law) and a minimum of five years experience with a focus on client support and business development preferably in the legal sector Strong understanding of the SE Qld SME market and industry base Previous experience in developing relationships with graduate employers and promoting the employment of graduates and students Experience in or demonstrated capacity to consult, assist and advise students in regards to employment opportunities High level communication, interpersonal and cross cultural skills Advanced networking skills and an ability to liaise with people at all levels both within the University (Students, General Staff and Academic Staff, Fellow careers staff) and with external organizations, particularly employers Proven ability to develop and maintain networks with industry partners as well as the ability to develop relationships for future opportunities Proven ability to negotiate arrangements with employers and to secure a commitment to provide a broad range of employment opportunities for Bond graduates (internships, work experience, part time and clerkships/graduate employment) Self-motivated, capacity to work independently with minimal supervision to achieve targets. Must have ability to develop systems and processes in a fast paced and changing service environment DESIRABLE CRITERIA: Experience in a university environment or learning institution Experience communicating with a culturally diverse client base Previous exposure to CRM models
3 COMPETENCY: RESPONSIBILITY: PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: Business Development Employer Engagement Travel within SE Qld and nationally to sustain employer relationships and secure employment opportunities Develop a proactive approach to building and maintaining employer relationships to support the ongoing placement of internship, work experience and PLT students across a broad range of subject areas Identify employers relevant to Bond University students in consultation with CDC Team, Faculty and other stakeholders with a particular focus on SME s clerkship/graduate, internship, work experience, PLT placements, and part time employment Maintain regular visits to employers and attend career promotional activities such as exhibitions, employer events/fairs, professional association meetings and networking opportunities Identify employer needs through active engagement and networking to establish relationships and opportunities for students Work with Industry Partners in regard to On Campus presentations including topics and availability Work with Faculty to identify employers of interest and opportunities to support Bond University this may include employer visits in class, introductions to Academics, sharing of information and opportunities with Academics to promote to students, seeking recommendations from Academics for employers Negotiate and facilitate internship and work experience opportunities for students with employers taking into account all employment related legislation Negotiate and facilitate PLT Placements Manage associated risks for students with employers conduct due diligence to ensure University terms and conditions are met Work with the Industry Support Officers and CDC team to source students, update employers of progress and ensure all associated documentation is completed to support internships and work experience placements Liaise with Faculty in regard to opportunities Provide placement follow up support to both employers and students Manage associated issues and communicate effectively with all parties Undertake post placement review and feedback with both student and employer to ensure quality placements that meet both employer meetings opportunities generated placements Respond to all s/enquiries within 24 hours Positive feedback from peers, employers, students and other stakeholders Effective follow-up and regular dealings with employers Accurate and effective use of Scout Feedback from peers Development of local, regional business development strategy
4 Employment Legislation and Bond terms and conditions Advise the University of initiatives to strengthen the Bond brand with local and regional employers and provide advice about progress towards employment targets and issues related to employability generally Liaise with CDC Team and Faculty staff in building employer representation at careers events and initiatives All aspects of promoting opportunities to students, graduates and alumni via Careers Website, Facebook and other methods Liaison with LSA and ALSA in regard to service delivery and engagement with industry as part of broader CDC Engagement with Faculty Student Associations Promotion of Career Development Services to employers through engagement, marketing materials and attending networking functions Provide specialist support to Faculties specifically through Careers Fairs, employment resources, workshops/seminars, employer campus visits and additional careers support as required Liaise with National Business Development Manager in regard to opportunities Develop local/regional domestic business development strategy with a focus on SME market and part time employers in consultation with key stakeholders across the University Meet key performance indicators of the role Due diligence of employers research and tracking, reporting of issues Understanding of Fair Work Act and related employment legislation Careers Fair and Employer Events on Campus Research, initiate, develop and maintain employer relationships domestically Support the annual Careers Fair and other employer events on campus including invitations, logistics and coordination of local and regional employers on campus Coordinate employers on campus for presentations Identify opportunities for employers to attend and host events on campus for students Perform other duties as required by the Director which are consistent with the position employers attending careers fair employers on campus students at employer events on campus Student Support Research and develop careers related resources in regard to SME employment, internships and work experience to be
5 published via the web Assist students seeking opportunities in regards careers processes to ensure maximum understanding and suitable employment outcomes Develop careers and employment related articles for publication in Student newsletters and as needed Provide careers and labor market advice to careers staff, students, faculty and other key stakeholders Promotion of all domestic careers events using both University resources and other applications (e.g. Facebook) to engage and communicate with students and University staff Assist with CDC Careers Events as needed Marketing Assist with the CDC marketing strategy to effectively promote and develop the Career Development Centre, Bond University and Bond graduates Review and develop new marketing strategies to engage with local, regional and SME employers to effectively promote Bond students and graduates and obtain employment opportunities Participate in marketing activities to promote the CDC, Bond University and its students Research, design and implement the CDC marketing collateral and industry mail outs targeted to local, regional and SME employers Attend events and provide information to prospective and current students as appropriate Introduction of new strategies Administration Manage own travel and diary Complete administration tasks associated with the development and implementation of programs, resources and services Ensure all employment opportunities are effectively advertised to students, graduates, alumni, Faculty and CDC Team. Report on a monthly basis of key performance statistics to the Director, CDC Have a clear understanding of EEO and OHS policies and how these affect careers Maintain a general knowledge of legislative policy as it relates to the higher education sector Use databases and other office software to undertake a range of tasks, including maintaining and analyzing data, generating reports and correspondence Maintain accurate records and consultation notes for each student who participates in a one on one appointment Effective use of Scout
6 Continuous Improvement Understanding of Quality Assurance Understanding of Cultural Sensitivity Assist in the continual review, updating and attend education seminars to ensure the currency of information provided to students To ensure a safe and healthy workplace, free from harassment and illegal forms of discrimination Maintain and enhance skills related to the position through appropriate training, professional development, review and supervision Staff should demonstrate an understanding of the principles of quality assurance and continuous improvement as they apply at Bond University. Staff are expected to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the Bond University Strategic Plan, university policy and to our quality assurance processes. Staff will come into contact with staff and students from a variety of cultural backgrounds. It is expected that mutual respect, cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity will form the basis of the professional working relationship. Staff are encouraged to attend a cultural sensitivity workshop to further enhance and develop cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity skills.
