2 Economic Development Summit Creating Your Community WOW Factor: The Role of Talent, Innovation and Place Monday, July 16 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m Session 1: Creating Your Community Profile Consumer preferences among Americans have shifted toward the greatest support to date for walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and multiple modes of transportation. Driving much of this shift are millennials and baby boomers. How do cities react to trending demographic preferences and their effect on communities in terms of housing, transit and community engagement? Presenters will share recent research, case studies and anecdotes showcasing success in using progressive place-making, quality of life, housing, transit and community engagement practices. Session 2: Creating Community Attractiveness and Recruitment Talent drives economic development. Regions that attract talent flourish, those who do not struggle. As such, economic development and planning have become increasingly intertwined. Gone are the days when tax incentives and logistics are enough to compete. Today s economic engine is the workforce, and the needs of employees millennials, Gen Xers and boomers alike have become paramount in attracting and retaining companies, large and small. This session explores interventions within the built environment and planning process that engage millennials and allow planners to build inclusive and vibrant cities. Session 3: Making the Best Financial Decision for Your Community This session focuses on how to connect urban planning and infrastructure design and how to use innovative financial tools to spur development, with a focus on TIF, special taxing districts and other mechanisms to support construction and maintenance of development. Session 4: Creating Your Community s Lasting Impressions This session will help participants understand how place-based branding is critically linked to economic indicators such as development, tourism, sports, arts, population metrics, sense of place and community pride. $129 for a One-Day Package or save when you attend multiple days.
