ACRP Report Foreword (MUTCD), while applicable to airports with respect to roadways, doesn t specifically speak to airports or the unique operating environment. this update ensures compliance with the MUTCD 6

ACRP Report 52 Chapter 3. Roadways Philosophy and Principles Due to the ambiguity in the past concerning the need to comply with the MUTCD many existing airport signing systems do not conform with the Manual. The challenge for both airport management and roadway sign design professional is to find a common ground that can satisfy both viewpoints under the current MUTCD guidelines. 7

ACRP Report 52 Chapter 3. Roadways Airport Management Viewpoints Signs are an identity or branding an airport Signs should look different than freeway signs, as a means to slow down traffic Roadway Professional Viewpoints Signs should comply with all traffic sign regs and design criteria including the MUTCD Sign conformance will lead to a safer and less frustrating driver experience 8

ACRP Report 52 [Chapter 6. Terminals] Symbology Not approved in the MUTCD: Arrivals (plane descending) Departures (plane ascending) Rental Car (2008 study) Approved in the MUTCD: Terminal Identifiers (A B C or 1 2 3) Airport symbol sign (I-5) and supplemental plaque w/airport name Airport symbol sign and an arrow may be used as a trailblazer 9

NCUTCD G/MI Task Force Airport Signs Conference calls communication Developed outline of issues Contacted TE staff at SFO Obtain SCOTE feedback 13

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Guide Sign Principles Redundancy Always have at least 2 signs w/same message before decision point Advance Signing two exits if airport exit on freeway three or more exits if airport exit on another freeway Exclusively for passenger facilities Passenger Terminals Garages and long-term parking lots Rental Car Returns Cell Phone Lot (60-70 stalls) 14

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Guide Signs for Passenger Terminals Domestic vs. International Terminal 1 vs. Terminal 2 vs. Terminal 3 Arrivals vs. Departures 15

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Guide Signs: Airport Exit White-on-blue used for Terminal Area follow the blue signs! White-on-green used for exit to freeway No Guide Signs: Off-Site Facilities Parking Hotels Guide Signs: Bike routes (guide signs and markings) thru airport property SF Bay Trail 17

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Regulatory Signs No major issues Warning Signs Conflicts between truck traffic and peds in crosswalks in cargo areas. Use W11-2 and supplemental AHEAD plaque 18

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Pavement Markings No major issues Curb Markings Although more an issue for CA airports; SFO has its own Rules and Regulations for enforcement purposes primarily for taxis and limos 19

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Which sources are used for TCDs? CA MUTCD ACRP Report 52 (wasn t aware of its existence) Why use CA MUTCD? Adopted Avoid litigation 20

NCUTCD Telephone Conversation w/sfo Outreach Are you aware of ACI-NA (Airports Council International North America)? No. Are you aware of ASMN (Airport Sign Managers Network)? No, although SFO s Sign Coordinator may be. Does ITE or other professional society have a Working Group that concerns itself with TCDs at airports? Not aware of any. 22
