Using Trash Bags for Fundraising Discussion with the Boy Scouts of America 2016
Today s Topics 1 About Waste Zero Why Bags Are a Great Fundraising Tool Scout Leaders Like the Idea Offered in the Most Popular Sizes and Thicknesses Pricing and Profits Program Support Working with WasteZero Next Steps 2
About WasteZero Founded in 1991, WasteZero is on a mission to cut the trash in half across the US. We are the national leader in helping cities and towns reduce waste and save money through innovative waste reduction programs. To support our programs, we Maintain a plastic bag manufacturing plant in Hemingway, SC, which uses recycled materials to make plastic bags for a range of specialized uses that require unique features and capabilities. Have developed a robust logistics management capability. We use our production and logistics assets to serve hundreds of municipal and corporate partners. Part of our work involves helping various non-profit organizations use trash and recycling bags for fundraising. WasteZero is a certified B Corp, meeting rigorous social and environmental standards. Our programs are the most effective available, cutting residential solid waste volumes by an average of 44%. 3
Why Trash Bags Are a Great Fundraising Tool for BSA Practically everyone needs to buy trash bags. Bags are used year-round and can generate ongoing, high-volume, repeat sales. Bags will not compete with popcorn sales, but will supplement them. A WasteZero bag program would be in keeping with Scouting-related values: US-made products create jobs here in America Recycled materials reduce waste and help the environment Aligns with Leave No Trace philosophy Products that people really need (such as trash bags) can effectively fund Scout activities 4
Scout Leaders Like the Idea At the BSA National Annual Meeting in Atlanta (May 20-22, 2015), WasteZero surveyed BSA representatives to get their opinions on the concept of using trash bags as a fundraiser. The results were very positive. 105 respondents 47 councils represented Responses grouped into 4 categories: Sample Comments: Everyone uses trash bags Great annuity potential 10% 1% Great Idea Great for sustainability Residual sales opportunity Excellent for roadside cleanup 18% Good Idea Great mark-up potential 71% Worth Investigating Not Interested 5
Offered in The Most Popular Sizes and Thicknesses Type Capacity (gal.) Dimensions & Closure (in., WxH) Gauge (mil) Count per Package Color Tall Kitchen Bag 13 24x27 Drawstring & 50-ct. options Olive Green Large Trash Bag 30 30x35 Drawstring Tan Contractor Bag 41 33x39 Drawstring Olive Green Made in the USA with Recycled Content Convenient Drawstring Closure In Scout colors (Olive and Tan) with Black Print Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Strong 3-Ply Construction Package: Roll in Clear Plastic Sleeve with Printed Insert 6
Pricing and Profits Each trash bag product will achieve BSA s target contribution margin of 70%, making it the perfect supplement for popcorn sales. Bag Type Bag Capacity (gal.) Bags per Roll Retail Price per Roll BSA Cost per Roll BSA Profit per Roll Tall Kitchen Bag $10.00 $2.95 $7.05 Tall Kitchen Bag $15.00 $4.35 $10.65 Large Trash Bag $15.00 $4.35 $10.65 Contractor Bag $20.00 $6.00 $
Competitively Priced for Your Customers When purchasing products as part of a fundraiser, customers expect to pay a bit more than market price, as they understand that they re paying for the item, as well as making a donation. This program keeps mark-ups relatively low, and far lower than some other fundraising alternatives. Bag Type Average Market Price per Bag Proposed Average BSA Price per Bag Percent Above Market Price Tall Kitchen Bag $0.24 $ % Standard Trash Bag $0.39 $ % Contractor Bag $0.89 $ % Note: Retail price analysis of brand-name bags conducted across multiple grocery stores, hardware stores, and pharmacies in NC, as well as online retailers, June 24-26, The retail pricing of these products will be very reasonable for your customers. The two largest sellers (the 13- and 30-gallon bags) are only 25%-28% above the average market price excellent for a fundraising product and far below the current markup for popcorn (85%). 8

Working with WasteZero WasteZero is flexible and can work with your Council in a couple of different ways, based on how you manage your fundraising efforts. Method A:? Trash Bags Estimate The quantities of bags needed Order Bags from WasteZero for your inventory Sell Either via show & sell or using order forms, delivering to customers as they buy Return unsold, undamaged bags to WasteZero for per our return / refund policy Method B: Trash Bags Take Orders from your customers using order forms provided during door-to-door sales Order bags from WasteZero once you have consolidated your customer orders & know the quantities you need Deliver to your customers when the bags arrive from WasteZero 11
Next Steps We will answer any questions you may have. Determine whether to move forward with a pilot in your Council. Decide on the quantities to order. WasteZero will ship ordered quantities to the Council, along with order forms. While selling, collect and share any feedback or requests you get from customers. 12
