Why sell popcorn? Simple: you can make a LOT of money for your unit and it fits in well with the aims of the BSA. How does the Boy Scout Popcorn Sales fit the mission and aims of the BSA? When we conduct a Popcorn Sales Campaign, it is important that we keep the values of Scouting in mind. One of the goals of Scouting is to teach a Scout to become self-reliant and to earn his own way. Leaders and parents have the opportunity to show Scouts how they, through their individual and combined efforts, can earn all the money it takes to operate their pack, troop, team or crew for the entire year. The only limiting factor is their level of participation. Many times, we hear of money-earning projects that rely heavily on the leaders or parents and very little on the Scouts. Other times we hear of projects that rely on the good name of Scouting to promote a commercial project or service. Many times, "the most amount of money in the shortest amount of time" is a signal that it MAY NOT be the best fit for Scouting--if we're going to view it as another opportunity to instill values in the young people we serve. Please review the chart below that shows the types of lessons we teach when we choose one type of moneyearning project or another. Then, consider what and how your unit will generate the necessary funds to operate. When a Unit Chooses to: Conduct a money-earning project that relies much more heavily on adult participation than to that of the Scouts. Rely on generous financial support of individuals, service clubs, chartered partners, etc. just to "make the budget." Assess a "program fee" on families or to collect the "weekly" dues in one lump sum at the beginning of the month or year. Offer to have parents donate extra money rather than deal with "another fund raiser." Here s what we teach the Scouts: Someone else will do the work for me. Let's look for a handout for what we want. I'll look to mom and dad--again--for money to do the things I want. I don't have to work for what I want, there's always another way. We have failed to teach the Scouts the value of self-reliance But, if the Unit chooses to: Conduct a popcorn sale with goals and projected use of the funds clearly explained before the sale begins. Support a popcorn sale with a portion of the unit proceeds designated for an individual Scout's use to further his Scouting experience. Avoid the temptation to look for a "quick fix" or someone to sponsor, underwrite or otherwise financially support the unit. Then, we can teach a Scout: By my efforts and those of my fellow Scouts, my unit gets the money it needs for badges and other supplies for my program. Not only does the unit benefit, but I can earn money for camp fees, Scouting supplies, etc. The harder I work, the more I earn. If it is important enough for us to have it, it is worth our effort to earn the money to buy it. We've taught the value of paying your own way

Popcorn Sales Components There are three components of the popcorn sale, (1) Take Order, (2) Show & Sell, and (3) On Line sales. Take Order - The Unit Take Order Sale should run simultaneously with Show & Sell and On Line sales. Before you begin your "Take Order" sale, go to to enter your Scouts into the unit popcorn system. Follow the "Instructions For Adding A Scout to Your Unit". You may enter all the boys into one single unit or, you may wish to create "sub-units" for individual Patrols or Dens. This will make it easier to track performance for unit contests and competitions you may have planned. Each Scout entered into the unit popcorn system will be issued a "Key Number". If you wish to do so, this will permit the boy to access his online "Take Order Form" and he can enter his sales as they occur, or you may wish to enter online orders for your boys from their printed "Take Order Form", whichever you feel is best. When your "Take Order" is complete, go online to and follow the "Instructions to Place, Edit or Review Orders". For the "Take Order," you may enter both cases and containers (there are multiple containers packed in each case). Before submitting your order to the council, be certain to review each boy s take order screen to confirm that it is accurate and complete. Your "Take Order" must be submitted no later than November 1st. Show & Sell 1) Your unit may want to bring the product in a vehicle to a local neighborhood and the boys go door to door in much the same way as the take order sale. The exception is that product is delivered and payment is received immediately. ~OR~ 2) Your unit secures a location and sets up a display to sell popcorn. This is usually a neighborhood store with significant customer foot traffic. Your unit must provide its own table, chairs, cash for change and signs. Be certain to secure permission from the store or property manager well in advance, since many competing organizations will also be reserving locations. Show & Sell should be scheduled between August 16 th - November 22 nd. Please complete your "Show & Sell worksheet. When this is complete, go to the Trails-End website: and follow these instructions to complete your order: Click on the "Leaders" link. Click on "Popcorn System" link. Enter your user name & password. (If you do not have a user name & password, contact your District Executive or Popcorn Staff Advisor Cary Wilson at or cawilson@bsamail.org. Click on orders. Then, Click on "Show & Sell" Enter case quantity in the appropriate box. Then, click on "submit to council" button. Exit (Online assistance is available at: help@trails-end.com) When determining your unit order, make sure you order enough to exceed your sales plan. Your District Executive has unit sales records as a guide. Remember that any popcorn that is remaining from the Show & Sell sale should be deducted from the "Take Order" you will place in November (If planned carefully, you should have nothing left over). Your "Show & Sell" order must be completed and placed on-line no later than August 1 st. Your order will be shipped and must be picked up at the District distribution site on August 16, Your District Executive will give you the times and directions to this location.
Unit Popcorn & Prize Orders We are using the on-line popcorn order system. You will find this to be an accurate and efficient method to manage your unit popcorn sale. Each Unit Popcorn Chair will be issued a user name and password. (You must have a valid address to be issued a user name and password.) This will give you access to the Trails-End Popcorn System on the internet. If you do not have access to the internet, you may come to the Council Service Center or visit your public Library. You will also place your prize orders online. Go online to and follow the" Instructions For Completing Unit Prize Orders" and follow the Keller s Prize Program link. Prizes will be shipped directly to the address provided on the Popcorn Sale Commitment Form" after all payments due council have been received. Your prize order must be submitted online no later than November 6 th. The Popcorn Prize website will be closed afterwards. Please submit your Prize Orders on time! If you need assistance to complete your popcorn order, online help is available at: help@trails-end.com or contact Cary Wilson or cawilson@bsamail.org or your District Executive.
TIPS FOR A GREAT POPCORN SALE! Great ideas make a plan work for your unit! A Scout s Plan for $650 and BEYOND! $100 By going around in my neighborhood & knocking on doors I should be able to get this amount. BUT I need my parent s help as I know even as an older scout it s unsafe for me to sell by myself. $200 By talking to my family & friends AND with my parents talking to their friends at work I should get at least the amount. But I have to ask in order to get the sale. $350 Work at least two booths and you should get about $175 each time and work at least 2 hours. I signed up for the following: & + $650 This is only the start! Imagine what happens when I keep selling? I could pay for my own Summer Camp, Get a new Scout Shirt the list is endless!
How to Sell 30 Popcorn Items in One Week Day Daily Activity Plan # Items Monday Sell to Mom and Dad (a given) 1 Tuesday Sell to neighbors on both sides of your house and the 4 two neighbors across the street. Wednesday Ask if Mom can take you in uniform or take orders for 6 you at her lunch room at work, club, etc. Thursday Ask if Dad can take you in uniform or take orders for 6 you at his lunch room at work, club, etc. Friday Call both of your Grandparents and your favorite Aunts & Uncles 6 Saturday TOTAL CONTAINERS Participate in the Pack Show & Sell and: have Mom or Dad take you to the homes of family and friends in other neighborhoods This plan works very successfully for the individual and for the whole unit to quickly reach the annual sales goal. Often it results in more than 30 containers as customers typically buy more than one container. Don t cut short your daily activity just because you reach 30 containers sooner! Pick a Plan or Create Your Own! You Can Do It! More Tips for a successful sale: Set up a booth at your local football game. (Have samples out for public to taste) Sell popcorn at a retirement community. Set up a booth after church. Ask minister to announce popcorn sale from the pulpit. Have parents sell at work. (Take samples to taste if possible) Sell at a community activity. Place popcorn sale ads in your school, church, and community bulletin/newsletter. Consider popcorn as an employee or customer thank you gift at places of business. Suggest popcorn as a gift idea for the Holidays for friends, relatives, etc.
