It is a slutin t ur natin s cncern n hw t address increased demand fr a glbally cmpetitive and talented wrkfrce. Althugh, an bvius slutin, mentring relatinships are ften less sught after; nt because it is difficult t attain, rather, because it takes time t build. Hwever, with the prliferatin f scial media, mentring relatinships can be sustained nw mre than ever. Multiple pints f cmmunicatin make it pssible fr mentrs and mentees t have their needs and expectatins met in ways that did nt exist just a decade ag. 2 Mentrship Guide Spring 2013 REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Befre beginning yur mentring experience, it is best t assess yur strengths, interests, experience, cntacts, and desired areas f develpment. A gd mentring relatinship is largely determined by the effrt that bth parties invest in the beginning stage, especially n part f the mentee as mentrs are sharing their time and resurces t help their mentee achieve sme f their prfessinal gals. Thus, individual drive t search fr grwth pprtunities when cmbined with a thrugh assessment f yur wn strengths and capabilities are critical cmpnents t shaping a successful mentring relatinship. A few key ideas t keep in mind thrughut the mentrship prcess: Yur first mentring relatinship may nt be the right fit; and May nt slve all yur persnal, prfessinal, r academic prblems, and A quality relatinship takes cmmitment and transparency Mst imprtantly, n mentring relatinship is the same. Everyne s jurney is his r her wn and it is imprtant t regard it in that way! When setting up a meeting, be sure t chse a mutually cnvenient lcatin. Discuss the frequency f meetings and scheduling early in the mentr-mentee relatinship. These steps are utlined belw: Step ne: Clearly define yur challenge(s). Step tw: Share yur identified challenge with yur mentr. Effective mentring is mre than sharing advice; it is helping t braden perspectives and teach new skills. Step three: Agreement n gals, rles, activities, measures, and bundaries thrugh a written cntract. Step fur: Keep the dialgue pen and running. Step five: Take actin n new ideas and appraches Step six: Use cnflict as an pprtunity t learn and jintly address cncerns. Step seven: Measure yur prgress. Step eight: Clse relatinship with an effective clsing cnversatin, which will allw yu t understand if yu met yur challenge. Defining the type f investment yu are willing t make tward the grwth f yur mentring relatinship will als aid in this prcess. Are my gals currently perceived and being achieved? 9) Hw fcused n my gals have I been lately? What might I need t fcus n? Why? 3
