1 Software Announcement April 4, 2000 Tivoli Device Manager Platform Enables Remote Management of Palm Devices Overview Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform (TDM for PCP) seamlessly extends the Tivoli Management Environment to off-site Palm organizers and handheld devices. We realize it s not practical to bring every off-site device to an on-site administrator each time (for example) software needs upgrading. That s why TDM for PCP lets your Tivoli administrator manage Palm OS devices from a central location without physical access to the device. This saves administrators and Palm users time and effort, which in turn, saves your company money. Software and Data Distribution With TDM for PCP, you can centrally discover existing Palm OS devices, install and remove applications, remotely set preferences and receive up-to-date inventory information for effective asset management. As a result, Palm users will be up-to-date on the latest tools and corporate information making them more productive on the road and more compatible with the rest of your company. Device Deployment TDM for PCP devices are immediately manageable at first synchronization and that means new users will be up and running faster. Device Discovery and Inventory Remote, single-action device discovery and inventory improves your company s ability to manage your assets efficiently and intelligently. Decision Support System The new Tivoli Decision Support Guide for Palm OS Devices is an advanced tool for making handheld computing decisions (like deployment and capacity planning) at the administrative and executive levels. Key Prerequisites The product will support PalmOS level 3.0 as well as higher levels of the operating system. The product runs over the current level of the framework and applications (3.6.1 level). No dependencies exist for changes inside the framework and applications. At Server, Gateway, and Console platform support level, the product supports the following core/tier one platforms: Windows NT 4.0 (Windows 2000) if possible depending if supported by Tivoli core application) Sun Solaris HP-UX AIX The console will also be supported on Windows 98. OS levels supported will follow standard Tivoli Enterprise release practices (that is, current OS level and one previous). Planned Availability Dates April 7, 2000 National Language Support April 7, 2000 At a Glance Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform (TDM for PCP) transforms Palm devices from personal companions to useful business tools. TDM for PCP extends the Tivoli environment to off-site devices and: Allows the administrator to manage Palm devices remotely with its no-touch functionality Operates without inconveniencing Palm users and decreasing productivity Fosters adherence to company standards by enabling applications to be easily installed and removed Improves asset management with remote preference-setting and device inventory management Includes the Tivoli Decision Support Guide for analyzing Palm OS deployment and capacity issues at all levels This announcement is provided for your information only. 2 Description This product contains six different components. Each component identifies a different feature of the product. TDM: We have already mentioned Tivoli Device Manager. This component constitutes the infrastructure for TDM for PCP and it is an integrated part of the product. TDM architecture is often referred as Device Support Infrastructure, DSI, and can be seen as a set of services that allow: Addressing a device within the Tivoli Infrastructure Using Management by Subscription paradigm on devices Enforcing Tivoli security and policies on devices Supporting of unsolicited notification from devices Palm Discovery: Palm discovery denotes the action of finding Palm devices attached to a workstation managed by a TMA and the creation of new instances for them within the TDM. The discovery process can be launched by command line and addressed to any target, from the single TMA to the entire region giving the administrator a very powerful capability. Software Distribution An enterprise may be interested in: installing new and updated applications on employees Palm devices, and keeping up-to-date Palm databases. Usually the users carry out these activities from their Palm Desktop. TDM for PCP provides administrators with a new resource, the PalmPackage, that allows them to install and update any set of applications or databases to the remote device. Software Distribution can be issued immediately after the installation of the product even before the first synchronization of an existing or new device. At the next synchronization, the application will be automatically downloaded to the device and an event will notify the Tivoli Enterprise Console. Device Configuration Management: Each device has settings that the device user can configure. The following list identifies some of the settings that can be managed centrally. The format of the date The currency The language The network and modem prefereces The Device Configuration Management is the feature that enables these settings on a device from a central location. All the configurations are stored in a Palm Configuration File that is distributed to the device through the normal software distribution process. The Tivoli Device Agent will interpret this configuration file and perform the setting on the device. Application Removal: Application Removal is the feature that allows a Tivoli administrator, at the server, to delete applications from devices. A new profile-based application enables the administrator to define the application to be removed. Dynamic access to the inventory database allows easy selection of the application to be removed among all the applications installed in at least one device in the enterprise. Inventory: Hardware and software discovery are supported to accomplish this task. Up-to-date information is collected from the device at each synchronization and collected centrally by exploiting the Tivoli Inventory capability of importing MIF files from TMA. A specific Palm Inventory profile is now available and can be distributed to any group of devices or a collection of them. Availability: Palm devices are often in the owner s pocket and periodically get synchronized with the hosting PC. From an availability point of view, an enterprise administrator may be interested in knowing when Palm devices get synchronized. TDM for PCP provides this awareness using T/EC events that are Tivoli s standard notification mechanism. Each time a Palm gets synchronized, a non-tme T/EC event is generated to model the synchronization of the device. Any other action, like a software distribution or application removal that will be completed on the device at synchronization time, generates similar events. These latter events are correlated with the events generated by the original action queued to the TMA companion of the device (software distribution or application removal). Year 2000 This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it. This program is EuroReady. Euro Currency For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at: EuroReady Products IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (that is, hardware, software, firmware, and so forth) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards. Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be not ready for euro unless otherwise stated in the product s country-specific specifications. IBM Hardware Ready IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady. Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready. EuroReady Solutions IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:
3 Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules Built in appropriate function and can clearly demonstrate this by: Detailing euro related requirements Describing how these will be implemented in the solution Declaring when the implementation will be generally available The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document. Product Positioning The Tivoli Device Manager Platform enables the Tivoli administrator to quickly gain control over existing and new Palm OS devices while simultaneously lowering the support costs associated with IT s task to transform these devices from personal companions to useful business tools. The synchronization machine can be either in local or network Hotsync mode. It needs to be an end point in the Tivoli management infrastructure and use the Palm HotSync synchronization technology. As endpoint platforms, the product supports Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 98. Windows 2000 is included but support depends on the specific Tivoli management product. At Server, Gateway, and Console platform support level, the product supports the following core/tier 1 platforms: Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98. Windows 2000 is included even if it mainly depends on when Tivoli Enterprise products will support this platform. At Server, Gateway, and Console platform support level, the product supports the following core/tier 1 platforms: Windows NT (Windows 2000 if possible depending if supported by Tivoli core application), Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX. The console will also be supported on Windows 98. OS levels supported will follow standard Tivoli Enterprise release practices (that is, current OS level and one previous). The product runs over the current level of the framework, and applications (3.6.1 level). No dependencies exist for changes inside the framework and applications. Software Distribution (3.6.1 or later), Inventory (3.6.1 or later) and TDS (2.0 or later) are optional prerequisites. Their presence is needed to exploit the related functions. Security, Auditability, and Control Tivoli Device Manager Platform uses the security and auditability features of the operating systems on which it operates. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Customer Financing IBM Global Financing offers attractive financing to credit-qualified commercial and government customers and Business Partners in more than 40 countries around the world. IBM Global Financing is provided by the IBM Credit Corporation in the United States. Offerings, rates, terms and availability may vary by country. Contact your local IBM Global Financing organization. Country organizations are listed on the Web at: Ordering Information New Licensees Orders for new licenses will be accepted now. Shipment will begin on the planned availability date. New users of the Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform should specify: Type Model Program Name 5698 DMP Tivoli Device Manager Platform Tivoli Management Points Terminology Definitions Tivoli Management Points are used to compute the license quantities and are program specific. Points cannot be transferred among separate products. Environment-Managed Model The Environment-Managed model is used to describe the new Tivoli price offering that separates licensing from architecture. In an environment-managed model the price is based on what is managed rather than the more traditional approach of pricing based on the number and type of product component. Thus, a server is defined as a server by its use in the customer s environment, not by its use within a Tivoli application. For example, all print and file servers for which a customer is using Tivoli This announcement is provided for your information only.
