3 Cntext drive AAFC mandate and EO science It is critical that AAFC gespatial science develpment be quickly mved utside f the research dmain in t peratinal applicatin fr targeting and implementing plicy. As AAFC mves frward with this new capacity it needs t better align mnitring activities and strengthen interactin with plicy / prgrams. New gespatial technlgy ffer pprtunities t imprve the timeliness, scpe, accuracy and integratin f science, bringing mre relevance t AAFC science and mre science t AAFC s plicies and prgrams. Earth bservatin-based decisin supprt that integrates airbrne, satellite, in situ, and grund data cllectin netwrks are sme f the gespatial technlgical keys t this future. Earth Observatin has the ptential t prvide timely wall-t-wall infrmatin t supprt AAFC prgrams and activities, either alne r integrated with ther gespatial data.

7 Cntext Opprtunities Advances in satellite and sensr engineering will lead t: the launch f new EO instruments with enhanced capabilities; prvide data cntinuity & lng term data recrds; drive a new generatin f scalable and spatially explicit agrenvirnmental (AE) indicatrs; and imprve the utput f prcess-based mdels. Open data archives in Canada and elsewhere will: imprve access t data, prducts and services; increase internatinal cllabratin; and and lead t glbally cnsistent methds fr data prduct validatin. Data prcessing centralizatin will allw increased data vlumes t be mre quickly and efficiently acquired, prcessed and stred.

8 Cntext Data Cubes The Data Cube Cncept Cube apprach is a way t manage EO data utilizing pen surce platfrm. Cubes are based n clud cmputing t supprt an infinite number f applicatins, makes it easier fr users t access and use space-based data and allws efficient time-series analyses and data assimilatin. Organizes 2D (Spatial) data temprally and spatially t allw flexible and efficient analysis f analysis-ready data (ARD). An Prpsed Internatinal Cllabrative Hub (Cube) Under AAFC s currently funded SAR Inter-cmparisn prject (CSA-GRIP), an pprtunity exists fr CEOS t create a data cube fr AAFC. Prpsed cube will huse data (in situ data, imagery, ther) frm Canadian and internatinal test sites invlved in experiment. The cube is being designed t advance internatinal cllabratins and related cmmitments regarding sharing EO agriculture research.

9 Cntext Future Directins Dmestic: Accelerated Operatinalizatin f R&D Early seasn crp acreage estimates. Yield frecasting with crp area estimates will prvide in-seasn crp prductin estimates. Supprts: Practive prgrams (early warning); Market access, cmpetitiveness, in-seasn crp quality; Prducers, pen market infrmatin t supprt management decisins. Imprved yield frecasts linked t StatCan Surveys t prvide mre reliable prductivity assessments at higher reslutins. Requires: Sil Misture Mnitring (integrated EO, in-situ and mdeling); Crp grwth parameters (LAI, fpar) and NRT crp cnditin assessment; Harvest Mnitring. EO-based farm management infrmatin (e.g. n tillage type, timing and crp residue) supprts indicatrs and market access issues. Internatinal: AAFC cmmitments t G20 (GEOGLAM) Develping JECAM research t imprve ur capacity t mnitr diverse landscapes, prvide infrmatin t supprt decisin making.
