1 5th Annual Instructins General Challenge: The challenge is t build a structurally efficient mdel water twer that hlds water that can be filled and drained quickly, while als being aesthetically pleasing. The 5 th Annual will be held as fllws: When: Saturday, Nvember 16 th frm 9:00 a.m. t 12:00 p.m. In each divisin (elementary and middle schl), the first place team will be awarded a cash prize f $300, Secnd Place team: $200, and Third Place team: $100. Time: Check-in between 9:00 am and 9:30 am Where: Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant, 8500 Battle Bridge Rad, Raleigh, NC Wh: Elementary (4 th and 5 th grades) and Middle Schl Students (individuals r teams f up t 4) Registratin deadline: Friday, Octber 11 th. T register, please r call Maggie Hennessy (cntact infrmatin belw) with the team name, students names and cntact and phne number fr each team entering the cmpetitin. There is n cst t enter. 2 5th Annual Mdel water twers may be f any design and cnstructed frm any materials. In fact, yu will be awarded fr using creative designs and innvative materials. Creative designs mean the water twer will functin even thugh it des nt lk like any ther twer. Innvate materials may have been used fr smething else at ne time an ld brm handle used fr supprt, fr instance. Due t facility cnstraints, we cannt supply electricity t twers. 3 5th Annual Objective The bjective f the cmpetitin is t make participants aware f the imprtance f reliable drinking water and the rewarding pprtunities available in the water prfessin. The cmpetitin des this by having students develp an idea int a functining water twer, just like water prfessinals d in the real wrld! Prizes will be awarded t the tp three finishers, with a tp prize f $300 fr 1 st place. The lwest scres win. Judges decisin is final. Judging will be based n fur criteria structural efficiency, hydraulic efficiency, cst efficiency and design ingenuity. Understand and achieve these criteria t d well! They are explained belw. Structural Efficiency Structural efficiency is calculated by dividing the weight f the mdel when it is empty by the average height f the tank times the amunt f water it hlds. The lwer this number the better. This is shwn with the fllwing frmula: Structural Efficiency Weight f Averagetank height (ft) the twer when empty(punds) Amunt f water the mdel hlds(gal) This criterin is similar t what engineer s use in the real wrld! Remember, the tank shuld be between 1.5 feet and 2.5 feet high. Hydraulic Efficiency Hydraulic efficiency is the amunt f time it takes the judges t fill the mdel with 1 galln f water and drain it back ut again. The judges will fill the tank thrugh the 3/8 inch cnnectr. The less time it takes t fill and drain the tank thrugh the cnnectr the better.

4 5th Annual Cst Efficiency Cst efficiency measures yur ability t save mney while building yur mdel. Bring receipts fr all items purchased fr yur mdel. Where recycled items are used, put the letter R in the cst clumn. Yu may use as many recycled materials as yu wish. A penalty f 1 pt will be given fr each missing receipt fr items purchased new. N receipt is necessary fr recycled items. Design Ingenuity Ingenuity (in ge nu i ty) is hw much imaginatin and skill were used in yur mdel. Water prfessinal must ften use ingenuity; they use skill and imaginatin t slve difficult prblems. The judges will lk at several items: Craftsmanship (is the mdel sturdy, d the parts fit tgether nicely)? Imaginatin (are the design r materials unique)? Artistic merit (des the mdel have creative ideas, clrs r themes)?

5 Penalties 5th Annual Keep t the fllwing standards when designing and cnstructing yur mdel: - The base f the mdel must fit in a square 1 ft n each side. - The tank must be between 1.5 and 2.5 feet high. - The tank must have a vent r remvable lid s the judges can tell when it is full. - When full, the tank must hld between 1 and 2.5 gallns f water and it shuld nt leak. Hint: test yur mdel t make sure. - The mdel must use the 3/8 inch cnnectr specified. - Bring receipts fr all materials purchased fr yur mdel. A ne pint penalty will be given fr each item nt having a receipt. (Reminder: recycled items have n cst assciated with them and d nt require a receipt.) - Electricity will nt be supplied t yur twer. Penalties will be assessed fr nt fllwing the abve standards. These standards are demnstrated in the diagram attached at the end f this hand-ut. 8 5th Annual Mdel Water Twer Cnnectr Cnnectr must be installed at the base f the mdel. Use the 3/8 diameter cnnectr. Vertical tube may be any diameter - use a reducer r increaser as necessary t change tube size Cnnectrs are available at Hme Dept r Lwes. Ask fr the WATTS Mdel N. PL-3022 Quick Cnnect 3/8 OD The prper 3/8" diameter push-n cnnectr must be used by all registered cntestants. Cnnectrs must be 3/8 O.D. n the pump cnnectin side. Watts 3/8 OD by 3/8 OD quick cnnect unin elbws (Mdel N. PL-3022) are available at bth Lwes and Hme Dept fr apprximately $3.50. The cst f the cnnectr will be deducted frm the ttal cst t cnstruct s it will nt affect yur Cst Efficiency scre. Yu must use the cnnectr specified t avid a penalty.
