3 TULS 2017 About Us The University of Tasmania Law Faculty is one of Australia s oldest law schools, producing justices, parliamentarians and luminaries in other fields. TULS occupies a unique place between the Faculty and the student body. TULS 2017 will endeavour to work closely with the University and student body to preserve UTAS s record of excellence and promote student welfare. 7 COMPETITIONS SPONSORSHIP TULS 2017 INVITES YOU TO BECOME A COMPETITIONS SPONSOR TULS has a proud tradition of helping students become strong advocates. In 2017, we intend to build on this tradition. In order to build students confidence and skills, TULS hosts twice-yearly competitions that are popular and hotly contested to build confidence and skills. TULS 2017 is expanding the role of competitions by having two Competitions Directors. This is to expand the number of competitions and to reflect students enthusiasm regarding competitions. TULS aims to continue achieving excellent results in national competitions. Our teams performed very well in 2016 and were grand champions in the Baker & McKenzie Women s Moot, the AAT moot and the Witness Examination at ALSA. THE MOOT The Mooting Competition provides students with the opportunity to develop advocacy, oratory, research and legal reasoning skills. The standard of the moots is very high and the competition is enthusiastically contested. IHL MOOT The IHL Moot is hosted by the Australian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross in conjunction with the ALSA. This competition is aimed at raising awareness of IHL issues within the University. In 2015, UTAS was runners-up at ALSA. WITNESS EXAMINATION Witness examination allows students to develop examination-in-chief and crossexamination skills in a mock trial scenario. This competition is particularly relevant for students wishing to pursue a career at the Bar. In 2016, UTAS s Chris Bigwood, won this competition at ALSA. CLIENT INTERVIEW Developing client interviewing skills is essential for any student planning to practice as a lawyer. Law students have the opportunity to improve these skills at the University of Tasmania through the TULS client interviewing competition. NEGOTIATION Negotiation skills are fundamental to successful legal practice due to the increasing percentage of disputes that are settled before trial. This competition involves a pair of students as a team, negotiating with another team on behalf of their respective clients. 7

9 EDUCATION EVENT SPONSORSHIP TULS 2017 INVITES YOU TO BECOME AN EDUCATIONAL EVENTS SPONSOR TULS SWOT-VAC TUTORIAL PROGRAM Since 2008, TULS has run an extremely successful Swot-Vac Tutorial Program. This affirmed TULS s role as a key player in the academic lives of students. Held in early Swot-Vac, these events exceeded our own high expectations in terms of its study body support as well as the high quality nature of tutorials. Indeed, they could hardly be called a tutorial hundreds of students packed out lecture theatres from successful fellow students as how to best to prepare for exams. High attendance makes for a great opportunity to advertise firms. Sponsoring the series of Swot- Vac Tutorials mean that your firm s logo will be attached to all promotional material (brochures, fliers and s), as well as prominently displayed on the TULS website, which contains a standalone page with preparatory material for the tutorials. TULS caters and runs a number of social events throughout the year for over 1000 members of the UTAS Faculty of Law. TULS events are also well attended by non-law students, providing a broader audience. 14 SOCIAL EVENT SPONSORSHIP BARRELS TULS runs numerous barrels each year and are a great opportunity for students to meet other students. Last year was arguably our most successful year when it came to barrels, getting around 300 people to the events on average. We brought back the traditional beer kegs last year and they were a huge success. Together with the continued tradition of high quality advertising, barrels are a great way to advertise your firm in a more social and relaxed environment.
