1 Re Flashing Yur CDM 570A/570AL Satellite Mdem I. Intrductin: Firmware Files, Naming, Versins, and Frmats 1) MAKE SURE TO OPERATE THE CDM 570A/L WITH ITS LATEST AVAILABLE FIRMWARE. 2) ETHERNET IP FUNCTIONALITY IS AVAILABLE ONLY WHEN THE CDM 570A/L IS EQUIPPED WITH THE OPTIONAL IP PACKET PROCESSOR. The CDM 570A/L Satellite Mdem is factry shipped with its latest versin f perating firmware. If yu need t update the mdem firmware, yu may dwnlad the update frm the Cmtech EF Data Web site ( Yu may als receive the firmware update archive file via e mail frm Cmtech EF Data Prduct Supprt. Yu may perfrm the firmware update, withut pening the CDM 570A/L, remtely ver satellite (when the unit is equipped with the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr), r by directly cnnecting a user supplied Micrsft Windws based PC t the CDM 570A/L M&C /100 Ethernet prt (fr units withut the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr) r the Traffic /100 Ethernet prt (fr units equipped with the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr). D these steps: Dwnlad the firmware update archive file via the Internet, r acquire the file frm Cmtech EF Data Prduct Supprt, and transfer the files t the User PC. Use Windws Cmmand line t transfer, via File Transfer Prtcl (FTP), the extracted firmware files frm the User PC t the CDM 570A/L standby firmware image. Use the CDM 570A/L frnt panel r the CDM 570A HTTP Interface t cnfigure the mdem t perate using the updated firmware image. T verify the crrect firmware number, see Step 1 in the next sectin f this guide. The firmware dwnlad files are available frm Cmtech EF Data in tw archive file frmats: *.exe (self extracting) and *.zip (cmpressed). Sme firewalls will nt allw dwnlading f *.exe files; in this case, dwnlad the *.zip file instead. If applicable, ne versin prir t the current release is als available fr dwnlad. Fr additinal help with "zipped" file types, refer t the help files prvided with the "PKZIP fr Windws", "WinZip", r "ZipCentral" file archiving prgrams. Getting Started: Prepare fr the Firmware Dwnlad If yu have already cmpleted this prcedure using CEFD dcument Re Flashing Yur Cmtech EF Data Prduct (CEFD P/N FLG FLASHINTRO_rx.pdf, where x is the dcument revisin number), cntinue t Sectin III. Dwnlading and Extracting the Firmware Update. 1) First, identify the CDM 570A/L firmware (number/revisin letter/versin number) and the assigned Ethernet Traffic IP Address. User supplied items needed: A Micrsft Windws based PC, equipped with available serial and Ethernet prts; a cmpatible Web brwser (e.g., Internet Explrer); and a terminal emulatr prgram (e.g., Tera Term r HyperTerminal). A 9 pin serial cable and a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable t cnnect the CDM 570A/L t the User PC. A. Use the 9 pin serial cable t cnnect the CDM 570A/L Remte Cntrl prt t a serial prt n the User PC. Use an Ethernet hub, switch, r a direct CAT5 Ethernet cable cnnectin t cnnect the User PC t the CDM 570A/L M&C /100 Ethernet prt (fr units withut the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr) r the Traffic /100 Ethernet prt (fr units equipped with the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr). B. On the PC Open the terminal emulatr prgram. Refer t yur terminal emulatr prgram HELP feature r user guide fr perating and cnfiguratin instructins. Cnfigure the utility prgram serial prt cmmunicatin and terminal display peratin: bps (Baud Rate) 8 Data Bits 1 Stp Bit Parity=NO Prt Flw Cntrl=NONE Display New line Rx/Tx: CR Lcal Ech=ON C. 4 Ethernet IP Address Use the Cnfiguratin LAN page t view the IP Address/Mask, as shwn in this example: Using the CDM 570A/L Serial Remte Interface (via the User PC / terminal emulatr prgram): Firmware Inf Use the <0/SWR? (cndensed) r <0/FRW? (detailed) remte query. Ethernet Traffic IP Address Use the <0/IPA? remte query. 2) Next, create a temprary flder (subdirectry) n the User PC fr the firmware archive dwnlad. Drive letter c: is used in these examples. Any valid, writable drive letter can be used. Typical fr all tasks: Type the cmmand withut qutes, and then press Enter t execute. There are several ways t create a temprary flder n a Windws based PC: A. Use the Windws Desktp t create and rename the temprary flder. Right click anywhere n the desktp t pen the ppup submenu, and then select New > Flder t create a temprary flder n the desktp. Right click n the new flder and then select Rename frm the ppup submenu. 5 B. Use Windws Explrer t create and rename the temprary flder. Select File > New > Flder t create a temprary flder. This creates the new flder in the active flder. Right click the New Flder flder name, and then rename this flder t "temp" r sme ther cnvenient, unused name: C. Use the Run and Brwse windws t create and rename the temprary flder. Select [Start] n the Windws taskbar, and then click the Run... icn. This pens the Run windw. Click [Brwse] in the Run windw. This pens the Brwse windw. Click the Create New Flder icn in the Brwse windw. This creates the new flder. Right click the New Flder flder name, and then rename this flder t temp r sme ther cnvenient, unused name: D. Use Windws Cmmand line t create the temprary flder. First, click [Start] n the Windws taskbar, and then click the Run... icn (r, depending n Windws OS versins prir t Windws 95, click the MS DOS Prmpt icn frm the Main Menu). 6 Fr Windws 95 r Windws 98, type cmmand (r, fr any Windws OS versins later than Windws 98, type cmd r cmmand ): Alternately, frm [Start], select All Prgrams > Accessries > Cmmand Prmpt. Finally, frm the Cmmand line prmpt (c:\>), type mkdir temp r md temp (mkdir and md stand fr make directry), and then click [OK]: There shuld nw be a "temp" flder created and available fr placement f the firmware file dwnlad. Dwnlad and Extract the Firmware Update If yu have already cmpleted this prcedure using CEFD dcument Re Flashing Yur Cmtech EF Data Prduct (CEFD P/N FLG FLASHINTRO_rx.pdf, where x is the dcument revisin number), cntinue t Sectin IV. Perfrming the Ethernet FTP Uplad Prcedure. 1) First, dwnlad the firmware update file frm the Cmtech EF Data Web site: A. G nline t B. On the Main page under Supprt Infrmatin r the Supprt tab, select the Sftware Dwnlads hyperlink. C. On the Sftware Dwnlads page click Dwnlad Flash and Sftware Update Files. D. On the Flash & Sftware Update Files page select the (Select a Prduct Line) Satellite Mdems hyperlink. E. On the Satellite Mdems prduct page select the CDM 570A & CDM 570AL prducts hyperlink. F. Select the apprpriate firmware archive EXE r ZIP file dwnlad hyperlink. G. Dwnlad the archive file t the temprary flder. Once the EXE r ZIP hyperlink is selected, the File Dwnlad windw pens and prmpts selectin f [Open] r [Save]: Click [Open] t turn ver file extractin t the user supplied utility prgram. Be sure t extract the firmware files t the temp flder created earlier. Click [Save] t pen the Save As windw. Be sure t select and [Save] the archive *.exe r *.zip file t the temp flder created earlier. Otherwise, click [Cancel] t quit and exit the file dwnlad prcess. 2) Next, extract the firmware files frm the archive file. (If nt already dne with File Dwnlad > [Open]) Extract the firmware files frm the dwnladed *.exe r *.zip archive file with the user supplied utility prgram: Duble click n the archive file name, and then fllw the prmpts prvided by the user supplied utility prgram. 8 Fr the Base Mdem firmware update (where * is the revisin letter and #.#.# is the firmware versin number): FW *_#.#.#.bin the Firmware Bulk image file, and CDM 570A_FW *_ReleaseNtes_v#.#.#.pdf the Firmware Release Ntes PDF file. Fr the IP Packet Prcessr firmware update (where * is the revisin letter and #_#_# is the firmware versin number): Withut 3XDES FW *_CDM 570A_PaP_#_#_#.bin r With 3XDES FW TBDx.bin and CDM 570A_PaP_Release_Ntes_v#.#.#.pdf (r a variatin f this filename, where * is the revisin letter and #.#.# is the firmware versin). 3) Cnfirm availability f the firmware files in the temprary flder. There are several ways yu may view the cntents f the temprary flder n a Windws based PC: A. Frm the Windws Desktp: Duble left click the temp flder saved t the Windws Desktp. Use Windws Explrer t lcate, and then duble left click the temp flder. Use the Brwse windw ([Start] >...Run > [Brwse]) t lcate, and then duble click the c:\temp flder. B. Using Cmmand line: Type cd c:\temp at the Cmmand line prmpt t change t the temprary directry created earlier using Cmmand line. Type dir t list the files extracted t the temprary directry frm the dwnladed archive file. The firmware files have been successfully dwnladed and are nw available fr transfer t the CDM 570A/L. Perfrm the Ethernet FTP Uplad Prcedure 1) Yu may prceed with the firmware update prcedure under the assumptins that: Yur CDM 570A/L is cnnected t a user supplied, Windws based PC, and: Yur PC serial prt is cnnected t the CDM 570A/L Remte Cntrl prt with a standard user serial cable. Yur PC Ethernet prt is cnnected t the CDM 570A/L IP Packet Prcessr Traffic 100 Ethernet prt with a user supplied hub, switch, r direct Ethernet cable cnnectin. Yur PC is running a terminal emulatin prgram (fr peratin f the CDM 570A/L s Serial Interface) and a cmpatible Web brwser (fr peratin f the CDM 570A HTTP Interface). Yur CDM 570A/L firmware and Ethernet Traffic/Management IP Address has been nted using either the CDM 570A/L s Serial Interface r the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Firmware Base Mdem / Admin Firmware Packet Prcessr and Cnfiguratin LAN pages, respectively. The latest firmware files have been dwnladed r therwise received frm Cmtech EF Data and are available n the User PC in an accessible temprary flder. 2) Mdem redundancy features must be disabled prir t update. 3) When updating firmware n mdems equipped with the IP Packet Prcessr, yu must uplad bth the Base Mdem and IP Packet Prcessr firmware files, and select the firmware slts prir t rebting the mdem. Befre yu can transfer the firmware files frm the User PC t the CDM 570A/L, yu must first use Cmmand line t ping the mdem t cnfirm prper cnnectin and cmmunicatin between the User PC and the mdem: Type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at the Cmmand line prmpt (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the unit Ethernet Traffic/Management IP Address). The respnse shuld cnfirm whether the unit is prperly cnnected and cmmunicating. Yu may prceed nce yu have verified User PC t Mdem cmmunicatins. 1) Use Cmmand line t transfer (FTP) the files frm the User PC t the CDM 570A/L: A. Type "ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the CDM 570A/L Ethernet Traffic/Management IP Address). B. The Admin User Name and Passwrd when prmpted. 10 C. Type bin t set the binary transfer mde. D. Type prmpt and then hash t facilitate the file uplad. T begin the file transfer transfer file FW *_#.#.#.bin (where * is the revisin letter and #.#.# is the versin number): If the IP Packet Prcessr is nt installed r is installed but inactive: Type "put FW *_#.#.#.bin a:\bulk.bin:" t begin the file transfers the destinatin a:\bulk.bin must be all lwer case. If the IP Packet Prcessr is installed and active: Type put FW *_#.#.#.bin (make sure yu d nt type the destinatin a:\bulk.bin as was dne fr the previus uplad ptin). Fr either ptin, it will take several minutes t transfer the file and update the firmware image. E. Once the file transfers, Cmmand line displays the uplad result, similar t: ftp: XXXXXXX bytes sent in XX.XXSecnds XXX.XXXKbytes/sec. In the event yu receive the Cnnectin clsed by remte hst. message, wait anther minute befre cntinuing. The firmware uplad smetimes takes lnger than the FTP client allws. F. Once the FTP uplad is cmplete, as the upgrade prcess cntinues, the mdem frnt panel displays: UPGRADING FIRMWARE Please Wait... The prcess sequences thrugh several blcks this will take several minutes. Once the update prcess is cmplete, the mdem returns yu t the previusly active menu screen. G. Type "bye" t terminate the FTP sessin, and then clse the Cmmand line windw. 2) Use the mdem frnt panel menus, the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Firmware Mdem page, r issue the Serial Remte Interface <0/SWR? r <0/FRW? query, as shwn previusly, t verify that the PC t Mdem FTP file transfer was successful. If yu are a Base Mdem user, the CDM 570A/L is nw perating with its latest firmware and yu may skip t Step 6. Hwever, if yu are running a CDM 570A/L with the ptinal IP Packet Prcessr installed, d NOT rebt at this time nce yu have upladed the Base Mdem firmware yu must prceed t the next step (Step 3) t uplad the IP Packet Prcessr firmware. 3) Befre yu can uplad the IP Packet Prcessr firmware, yu must first specifiy which firmware slt will receive the firmware update file transfer. 11 On the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Firmware Packet Prcessr page, use the Upgrade T drp dwn list t select Latest, Image 1, r Image 2. Click [Submit] t save. Yu may prceed nce yu have specified the file transfer destinatin slt. 4) Use Cmmand line t initiate the FTP sessin with the mdem. A. Type "ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the CDM 570A/L Ethernet Traffic/Management IP Address). B. Enter the Admin User Name and Passwrd t cmplete lgin. C. Type "bin" t set the binary transfer mde. D. Type "prmpt", and then type "hash" t facilitate the file uplad. E. Type put FW *_CDM 570A_PaP_#_#_#.bin t begin the file uplad. It will take several minutes t transfer and write the files t flash memry. Once the file transfers, Cmmand line displays the uplad result, similar t: 200 Prt OK 150 Opening data cnnectin 226 Packet Prcessr upgrade cmplete Safe t rebt. ftp: XXXXXXXX bytes sent in X.XXSecnds XXXX.XXKbytes/sec. F. Once the FTP uplad is cmplete, as the upgrade prcess cntinues, the mdem frnt panel displays: IP OPTION CARD UPGRADING..PLEASE WAIT G. The prcess sequences thrugh several blcks this will take several minutes. Once the update prcess is cmplete, the mdem frnt panel displays: Upgrade finished Press CLEAR t cntinue. Press the mdem frnt panel CLEAR key as prmpted. H. Type "bye" t terminate the FTP sessin, and then clse the Cmmand line windw. 5) Use the mdem frnt panel menus r the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Firmware Packet Prcessr page t verify that the PC t Mdem IP Packet Prcessr firmware FTP file transfer was successful. 6) Use the mdem frnt panel menus and/r the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Firmware Mdem page and, as applicable, the Admin Firmware Packet Prcessr page t select the desired firmware images t bt frm: Re Flashing Yur CDM 570A/570AL Satellite Mdem 11 FLG CDM570A Revisin 1

12 A. Using the mdem frnt panel menus: First, t select the desired Bt Image, make sure that yu are perating in LOCAL mde (CONFIG: Remte Lcal). Fr the Base Mdem firmware image, g t the SELECT: Utilities Firmware Select menu branch and use the arrw keys t select the Next Rebt Image as 1 r 2. Press the frnt panel ENTER key when dne. B. Using the CDM 570A HTTP Interface: Fr the Base Mdem firmware, g t the Admin Firmware Mdem page. Use the Next Rebt, will use drp dwn list t select Latest, Image#1 r Image#2. Click [Submit] t save. Fr the IP Packet Prcessr firmware, g t the Admin Firmware Packet Prcessr page. Use the Bt Frm drp dwn list t select Latest, Image#1 r Image#2. Click [Submit] t save. 7) Rebt the CDM 570A/L. Yu may perfrm a sft rebt r a hard rebt as fllws: Fr a sft rebt, use the CDM 570A HTTP Interface Admin Rebt page. Click [Rebt Nw]. Bth the web page and the mdem frnt panel will display messages similar t Rebting, Please wait... as rebt cmmences. Fr a hard rebt, frm CDM 570A/L rear panel, turn ff r therwise discnnect, and then turn n/recnnect the pwer surce t execute rebt f the mdem. The system rebt is cmplete nce the mdem frnt panel displays the tp level splash screen: Cmtech CDM-570AL Mdem Firmware Versin: #.#.# Yu will need t lg in t a new Web sessin at this time. The CDM 570A HTTP Interface Hme page will serve t verify that the new firmware versin is active, as shwn in this example: The CDM 570A/L is nw perating with its latest firmware.
