6 Key role of hydrogen as an energy carrier to facilitate the energy transition in Germany (II) To achieve the German government s goal of a national energy transition through robust expansion in renewable energies, energy storage systems are needed. Hydrogen has the potential to store renewable energy from wind in sufficient quantities. Performing energy Wind Hydrogen Alliance initiative has arisen from renowned representatives of industry, science as well as environmental and technology funding organizations in order to create - through initial trial projects - the conditions for the future economic integration of hydrogen storage in the energy sector. 5
