1 Invitation TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DISTRICT ENERGY CONFERENCE IDEA2016 ST. PAUL, MN JUNE 2016 The DBDH export promotion to the US is implemented in a close cooperation with the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington, Danish District Energy Alliance (DDEA), District Energy St. Paul and IDEA the North American District Heating Association. The Danish Ambassador to the US will participate actively in the program. At the, all major stakeholders within district energy in the US are gathered. The Danish delegation will have an exhibition stand at IDEA The Danish activities at the conference and at the trade show will mobilize the right decision makers and thereby give some valuable contacts for the Danish participants. In addition there will be organized visits to several coming district heating projects. Participation at the DBDH export promotion tour gives the participants firsthand information and contacts that can create direct sales and help newcomers to the American district energy market to decide on future involvement and set-up in the US.

5 BACKGROUND Total installed district heating capacity in the US is 89,600 Mwth and the total sales of DH is 3.5 times more than sales of DH in Denmark or 25% more than the sales in Germany, which is the largest DH market in Europe. On top of that, the US is the world s largest district cooling market. 98% of district heating delivered in the US is based on steam also called 1. generation DH. But there is a tendency to concert the oldest steam DH networks to hot water DH. The DH is primarily produced on natural gas (77%), coal (15%), oil (5%) and finally biomass e.g. (3%). However, there is a paradigm shift underway in the US, where they go from the big centralized coal-fired power plants towards applications with smaller CO2 footprint. The last few years have seen installment of many smaller district heating systems based on solar, wind and / or gas from landfills. This is largely due to the US' energy policies, which focus on getting more renewable energy sources into the heating secor. In addition, increased requirements for environmental regulations and requirements to include pollution costs (compliance costs) have led to conversion to biomass for many coal-fired power plants. In the US there is a total of 2,500 DH networks that heat up a total of 368 million m2, and annually the DH network is expanded with more than 25 million m2 (approx. 1% annually). The largest customers of DH and DC are universities and town centers with large office buildings.
