3 It is our firm belief that the Human Resources is the most critical function that focuses the organization s ability to reach and effectively deploy talent. Since 2014, Birches Group has delivered its training program to help strengthen human resource professionals across the different public and not-for-profit communities we serve. We have offered workshops on Job Design and Evaluation, Compensation Management, and Recognition and Reward. All three courses consistently highlight the importance of standards and clarity in human resources. We are pleased to offer a workshop that integrates the core concepts of our three 3-day workshops into an intensive 5day course. We invite you to learn more. Who Should Join this Workshop? Human resources professionals who seek to build an understanding of the science of Human Resources. Non-HR professionals and leaders who want to extend their skills by learning critical people management concepts. Page 1 Building a community of practice.

4 Human Resources is often asked to be a strategic partner in delivering the organization s mission. It is tasked with securing the talent, building the workforce, and enabling performance. The challenge has been not just how to accomplish all of these but how to do it in an integrated way. In the span of five intensive days, workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of how to link four critical areas of Human Resources: Evaluation of Jobs Design of Salary Scales Assessment of Skills Measurement of Performance Learn from the experience and expertise of our facilitators and from other participants. *Dedicated hours after the workshop will be available for participants who wish to discuss any organizationspecific issues in a more in-depth setting. Slots will be limited and are on a first come, first served basis. Page 2 The Challenge. The Workshop Flow Let s begin with jobs. The job evaluation framework is the foundation of effective compensation design, skills assessment, and performance measurement. The module on Jobs will focus on examining jobs using the simple, three factors of Community : Purpose, Engagement, and Delivery. Translating job structures to pay structures. Capturing knowledge and recognizing experience. Measuring and rewarding achievement. The module on Markets will be about creating pay structures that can attract, retain, motivate, and exit staff, ultimately aligning the external market to the internal workforce. The module on Skills will use the same three factors in job evaluation to measure growth in skill that can be linked to growth in pay. The module on Performance will again use the three factors to measure performance in a simple, multi-rater way to celebrate most of staff s contribution to the organization.

Salary Scale Design. The concepts from the Jobs module will be supplemented by guided evaluation exercises using job descriptions taken from Birches Group client organizations. Participants will learn the fundamentals of design and how to develop and discern roles across a team consistently based on principles of equivalent worth.. Participants will be given an Excel based tool and be guided on how to design an effective salary scale that targets organization position and composition, further supporting internal team cohesion while attaining market competitiveness. Skills Assessment. Performance Evaluation. Participants will examine fictional individual employee profiles aligned to job descriptions and job levels, to determine each person s level of proficiency across multiple skills indicators, and overall skills stage. Carrying over the fictional employee profiles used in the previous module, participants will then assess their level of achievement against job expectations within a given performance period. Hands on analysis for all the learning activities are enabled by the CommunityTM platform

6 The Integrated Solution. The workshop is built on Birches Group s integrated Human Resource platform Community. Page 4 Enabled by Community Community Jobs Community Markets The Community application will be used across the job evaluation, skills assessment, and performance evaluation exercises. Data used in the salary scale design module will be extracted from Birches Group salary survey reports that have the Community job levels at their core. Access to the Community system will be provided for participants to use during the workshop. Community Skills Participants are encouraged to bring laptops with Microsoft Excel for use during the salary scale design exercises. Community Performance

9 Page 7 Meet Our Team Gary McGillicuddy Gary is the Managing Partner of Birches Group based in New York. He also leads Birches Group s international consulting services team, and has advised clients including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the African Union, among other major international, bilateral governmental, and international NGOs. His background is in organizational design, job design, and compensation policy design. Prior to establishing Birches Group, Gary served in various HR leadership functions in the United Nations Development Programme for over 20 years. Jeffrey Slater Jeffrey is one of five Birches Group partners and is based out of Bangkok. He manages major client relationships for Birches Groups and leads its Information Technology function in the development of Birches Group s Community platform. He worked with Gary in the United Nations Development Programme as part of the Compensation Survey programme, as well as led trainings within UNDP and now with Birches Group. Jeffrey is fluent in French and Spanish. PJ Manalo PJ is the Training and Advisory Services Manager based in the Philippines. He specializes in Job Evaluation and Organization Design, and has been deeply involved in the design and development of Birches Group s Community platform as well as its training programme. He has trained Birches Group staff and clients since 2007.
