2 Welcome from Barry Jenkins OBE, President Thank you for your interest in the role of Chief Executive at The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF). Founded in 1924, the CTBF is the leading UK charity for people working behind the scenes in film, cinema and commercial television. We support creative, production professionals, marketers and administration staff from script to screen, who find themselves in times of need for one reason or another. Through donations, supporter subscriptions, and events including The Royal Film Performance, the CTBF is able to help more than 1,000 beneficiaries and their families every year. However, the industry is changing with a move to digital and online platforms coupled with changing work patterns in the UK to more part-time and freelance contracts. Alongside this CTBF is changing and the charity wishes to explore the best ways to support beneficiaries in the future by helping people as they enter the industry and to support them throughout their careers when times may be difficult or hard for them. range of stakeholders. 3 About Us The cinema industry in the UK was fairly well established but fragmented by With over 3,000 cinemas nationwide, the industry had grown quickly, and in the early days thousands were employed on relatively low pay, even by the standards of the time. By the 1920s, employers and philanthropists had come to recognise the need to deal with the social conditions and sometimes desperate situations that cinema employees were facing. In April 1925, the first meeting of the Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund took place in 33 Soho Square and the Fund received its very first donation the proceeds of the Cinematograph Garden Party held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, which yielded the impressive sum of 2,551.10s.10d, equivalent at the time to the purchase price of a very big house in the country. One of the first donors was cinema pioneer Sir William Jury, who not only made an early contribution to the Fund of 1,000, but in 1935 bought Glebelands a large country house in Berkshire for the Fund to use as a rest and convalescent home. Kind Hearts and Coronets The great names in the British cinema industry Delfont, Samuelson, Rank, Woolf run through the history of the fund, just as today it enjoys the patronage of Lords Puttnam and Grade, and the support of our most talented film-makers and performers, including Sir Alan Parker, the multiaward winning director, and the Broccoli family, producers of the James Bond franchise. The Royal Connection HM The Queen, is the current Royal Patron of the Fund a role she inherited from her father who saw the very first Royal Command Film Performance at the Empire Leicester Square. A Matter of Life and Death, the Powell Pressberger Film starring David Niven, Roger Lifesay and Raymond Massey. King George was accompanied by Queen Elizabeth and the two young princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret. Small screen, big impact By 1964, the influence of television was beginning to have an impact and Lord Rank proposed the modernisation of the fund. The name was subsequently changed to The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and for the first time, membership and benefits were extended to staff members in the Independent Television Companies. Further modernisation took place in 1972 with the appointment of the first full time Executive Director a salaried employee who would take over the running of the Fund, answerable to the President and Trustees.

4 Support The CTBF provides financial support and pastoral care. We provide one-off grants and regular payments to those in need. Welfare services are based at Head Office in London with our own fully trained visitors across all regions of the UK. The CTBF Richard Attenborough Scholarship provides financial assistance towards tuition fees for students who wish to attend the National Film and Television School but are facing financial difficulties. The John Brabourne Awards are a stepping stone for emerging talent, driven to further their careers in all aspects of the film and television industries. Our support continues into senior years at Glebelands, our own care home, providing residential care and full nursing. In addition we offer independent living in the adjacent Broccoli Cloister, a wonderful development of twenty seven flats. The CTBF also has a National Care Plan, enabling those who have worked in the industry and their parents, to receive a discount in any Anchor care home across England. The partnership with Anchor means that our beneficiaries can now access care homes at preferential rates and receive help with finding retirement housing from a trusted and highly regarded provided. Strategic Review The objective of the review is to better understand the views of all those we interact with, both stakeholders and beneficiaries, in order to become more effective at helping many more people as they enter the industry and to support them throughout their careers, when times may be difficult or hard for them and their families. We have sought to achieve this by establishing a level of awareness and understanding of the CTBF among stakeholders and the current and potential beneficiaries, by better understanding the needs of the people working behind the scenes in the films, cinema and commercial industries and who they would turn to for help, by researching and analysing how current marketing and communication strategies are perceived by the industry and by attempting to gauge the levels of affinity towards the CTBF. It is hoped that our new Chief Executive will be able to use this evidence to ensure that we remain relevant and that we continue to expand our reach in line with our intended beneficiaries priorities.

5 Fundraising The highlight of our year is the Royal Film Performance. In October 2015, its 69th year, this prestigious event was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The film itself was the world premiere of Spectre and was held at the Royal Albert Hall. The two other main events for the year was the London Party held at the Tower of London and the Comedy lunch held at BAFTA. Donations and legacies remain an important income stream for the CTBF and we continue to promote our three categories of participation for donors, Partners, previously corporate members; Supporters, previously Life, Platinum, Gold and Silver Members; and Friends, a brand new category, open to all at no cost. Financial Strength Governance The current Trustee Board numbers 13 Trustees with a broad range of business experience drawn from all facets of the film and TV industries. The Trustees hold four meetings each calendar year. The Trustees elect a President, currently Barry Jenkins OBE, for a three year term who acts as Chair of the Board at meetings. To enable the Trustees to manage the CTBF effectively, six committees have been established to oversee, offer advice, and act on behalf of the Board of Trustees on particular aspects of the work of the CTBF. The current committees have the full authority of the CTBF, acting as a liaison between the Board and the Chief Executive, and report back to the full Board at the quarterly Trustee meetings and cover the following disciplines: Estates, Finance, Fundraising, Investment, Strategy and Welfare. The CTBF has healthy reserves which totalled in excess of 31m at the 31 March 2015 year end. Income for the year ended 31 March 2015 totalled 3.2m with expenditure of 5.2m which left a deficit from charitable activities of 2.0m, however the net gain from the Investment Portfolio, which totalled 2.9m resulted in the CTBF reporting a surplus of 0.9m for the year.

6 2016 and beyond The CTBF will continue to offer help and support, both practical and financial, to individuals and their families, who have worked in cinema and television. We will maximise awareness of the National Care Plan amongst potential beneficiaries, promote our new supporter arrangements, further strengthen our links with the cinema, film and commercial television industries, continue to secure excellent films to be screened at the Royal Film Performance, maximise revenue generation, maintain high levels of communication with supporters and work to continually improve and establish new forms of welfare support for current and new beneficiaries and their dependents. The CTBF would like to thank all our Partners, Supporters and Friends for their support. Our distributors and exhibitors who assist us throughout the year, the management and staff at Golden Square and Glebelands for their continued support and our dedicated Trustees, all of whom play there part in ensuring that we deliver the best possible outcomes for our beneficiaries. The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund is a registered charity with the Charity Commission (registration number ) and we are now widely known as the CTBF.

7 Role Profile Title: Salary: Responsible to: Contract: Annual Leave: Location: Chief Executive At least 90,000 per annum Chair and Board of Trustees Permanent 25 days per annum plus bank holidays Central London Purpose As Chief Executive, you will be responsible for providing clear strategic and operational leadership to drive the CTBF forward as it builds upon its position and reputation as the UK s leading charity for people working behind the scenes in film, cinema and commercial television, raising levels of awareness and understanding of the CTBF to existing and potential beneficiaries. Accountabilities Ensure the long term sustainability of the organisation, through effective governance, sound finance and the delivery of relevant support and services to our beneficiaries Increase the effectiveness of our current income streams and identify and develop new income generating activities Engage with the Cinema and Television industries to ensure that the charity s activities remain relevant to their needs Provide operational leadership to the organisation, taking responsibility for its management and administration on a day-today basis Manage the organisation s affairs in an efficient and effective manner, in line with the objectives set out in the Strategic Plan and with legislative and regulatory requirements Work with our Head of Welfare to develop and expand services within the current strategic framework Work closely with Peter Meunier, our Finance Director and Company Secretary, to ensure the development and implementation of comprehensive annual operating plans and budgets, and provide close monitoring and timely reporting Enable and support the Board to fulfil its duties and responsibilities for the proper governance of the organisation, ensuring that the Board receives advice and information in a timely, thorough and appropriate manner

8 Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Provide strong and focused leadership to the CTBF Lead on the development and delivery of strategic objectives and plans Provide inspirational leadership, ensuring collaboration, accountability and high levels of performance throughout the organisation Develop key performance indicators, ensuring that the organisation delivers on agreed strategic goals, annual plans and budgets Motivate, develop and support Peter Meunier, our Finance Director and Company Secretary and our Head of Welfare, ensuring on-going performance monitoring, analysis and development opportunities Take the lead in ensuring demonstrable impact from our work, which can be evidenced and articulated Strengthen existing and identify new strategic links with individuals, organisations and networks to expand our reach in the UK Ensure that the CTBF continues to have sustainable sources of income from individuals, trust and foundations, events and corporate partnerships to meet its current and future financial needs Ensure that relationships are maintained and strengthened with our key audiences and the cinema and television sectors more widely and with government Identify and develop new commercial opportunities for the organisation Support staff in business development and with the preparation of proposals Governance Build and maintain good relationships with the President and the Trustees, actively seeking their input and support for strategic plans and other Board level decisions Support the Board in its governance and planning activities and ensure the organisation is compliant with all relevant legislation, regulations and best practice Provide timely, regular information to the Board on impact, using agreed performance measures and outcomes Ensure that the investment portfolio and cash accounts continue to be managed effectively

9 Finance, Operational Management and HR Provide a strong and supportive day-to-day leadership presence on organisational issues, challenges and priorities for all staff Ensure the financial health and performance of the CTBF Ensure that budgets are prepared and approved by the Board, and expenditure is controlled and proactively managed Lead the senior leadership team in ensuring that all aspects of human resources, finances and operations are to a high standard and in line with best practice Ensure that the members of the senior leadership team manage and develop their team members effectively, enabling all staff to contribute to delivering the organisation s strategic plan and fulfil their potential Embed continuous quality improvement and an effective learning culture across all our work External Relations Act as a visible, high-profile spokesperson for the organisation, raising its visibility and status Enhance the reputation of the CTBF, including increasing awareness of the need for our interventions and the impact of the organisation s work Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy to raise the profile of our work and interventions to existing and potential beneficiaries, making use of digital platforms and social media Maintain and enhance the CTBF s leadership role at the forefront of developments in this space Proactively seek and secure partnerships to help the CTBF to achieve its charitable objectives including the development of our communications and PR strategies Cultivate strong on-going relationships with the our partners, funders and other stakeholders Ensure clear messaging to external audiences building and maintaining a rich network of contacts helpful to driving our mission forward This is not an exhaustive list. 10 Person Specification Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate a wide range of knowledge, experience, skills, abilities and attitudes. Knowledge and experience Senior leadership experience in a commercial, not for profit or public service setting Experience of working in or with the moving image industry and an understanding of current developments Knowledge and understanding or at least a demonstrable commitment to the work of the CTBF Appreciation of the charity and voluntary sector and the political and funding environment in which charities are operating Experience of working effectively as a member of, or reportee to, a Board of Trustees or Directors or Governors Knowledge and experience of strategic planning and business development, operational planning and delivery management Knowledge and experience of organisational finance and budget planning cycles Experience of successfully leading a team or organisation through a period of change Skills and abilities Strategic leadership, planning and decisionmaking in cooperation with the Board of Trustees Ability to inspire and empower the staff team to implement and deliver the Charity s strategic plan Ability to analyse the external environment within which the CTBF operates and formulate strategies to build on our strengths and any potential areas of development Highly effective and persuasive communication skills with the ability to influence a wide range of external stakeholders Knowledge and expertise in digital communications and social media Sound business acumen in an entrepreneurial environment Attitudes Confident as a leader of a national organisation operating in an increasingly important field Demonstrable commitment and passion for our work and to our beneficiaries Ambitious, proactive and resourceful with the ability and commitment to achieve organisational effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability Creative, entrepreneurial and emotionally intelligent Hardworking, energetic and willing to get involved at all levels of the Charity s operations as required Honest and transparent, with the ability to build open and trusting relationships
