Health and safety Electrical installation Engineering drawings Maintenance Soldering Fault finding Electronics Instrumentation Electrical safety Safe use of tools The role of an Electrical Apprentice: Electricians are highly skilled crafts people, who work with electrical equipment and supplies on a wide range of engineering machinery and equipment. They also control and maintain instrumentation equipment that is used to accurately measure and regulate process variables such as the flow rate of liquids or gasses, temperature or pressure. Their work ranges from installation of domestic electrical circuits for houses, to the installation and maintenance of sophisticated, highly complex machinery and equipment in major processing plants and factories. Electricians install, maintain and test electrical and instrumentation equipment, systems and appliances, and have to be able to diagnose and fault find problems with electrical equipment. For these reasons they need to be highly skilled with a logical and methodical approach to their work. First Year - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Second Year - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by Gen2 staff around every six weeks to assess your competence. Third & Fourth Year (for Advanced Apprentices) - Assessed on your NVQ in your workplace.

How to work in a safe manner, you will become familiar with industry guidelines and regulations such as LOLER, PUWER and COSHH Produce drawings and designs using Computer Aided Design (CAD) CAD and additional design & prototyping programmes Maintenance of existing equipment and manufacture of new parts when required Problem Solving and fault-finding Installation, testing and adjustment of plant and machinery to make sure it is running smoothly, safely and meeting performance targets Use of different tools In addition you could possibly go on to Higher Education. The role of an Electrical Design Apprentice: Electrical design engineering is a highly skilled technical role that will require you to work with a design house designing a wide range of electrical and electronic installations. Electrical Design Engineers need to be safety conscious and have good IT, mathematics and communication skills. Electricians need to have perfect colour vision and therefore must undertake a colour vision test. First Year - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Health and safety Bench fitting Mechanical maintenance Fault finding Safe use of tools Milling Turning Basic pipe fitting CAD Fabrication The role of a Mechanical Apprentice: Hand Fitting, machining, maintenance of pumps, gearboxes and compressors are just a few of the things that you will work with as a mechanical apprentice. The apprenticeship involves the installation and maintenance of a wide range of engineering plant equipment, it may also involve the manufacture of new components using machinery. Mechanical Craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors with complex plant and equipment. They are involved in the manufacture of component parts for machines, the assembly and installation of machinery, as well as the maintenance of equipment. They must work with precision and accuracy, and have a logical approach to work. They also need to be able to read and interpret drawings /diagrams, diagnose and fault-find problems with equipment, and work cooperatively with other colleagues. First Year - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Second Year - Employer work placement. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week and will be visited by Gen2 staff around every six weeks to assess your competence. 6 Control Systems Advanced Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Responsibilities plus: Advanced Apprenticeship (42 months) NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technical Support Technical Certificate - BTEC Diploma in Engineering West Cumbria Learners - The first year will be spent training in the Energus facility at Lillyhall with one day per week studying a Technical Certificate. In year two you will join the Control Systems Department and undertake work experience to gain relevant skills and experience. During this time you will continue to work towards a Technical Certificate as well as returning for specialist training and projects at the Gen2 Energus facility. In year three you will undertake additional project work at Gen2 alongside your employment. Carlisle and Furness Learners - You will be employed by a company from day one. You will either complete your training with Gen2, and/or at your place of work. You will study a Technical Certificate one day per week. What will I study as a Control Systems Apprentice with Gen2? Computer programming Maintenance of plant automation systems Programming automated systems Knowledge of process plant operations Programmable logic controllers Supervisory control and data acquisition The role of a Control Systems Apprentice: All production and manufacturing plants require control systems, without them the plants simply wouldn t function properly. Control System Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the plant operates satisfactorily and with peak efficiency. Control systems are particularly essential to industries such as Nuclear, Chemical, Petrochemical and Manufacturing. Control systems engineering has become a modern and complex discipline that requires the worker to have a wide experience of subjects such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), software engineering, plant instrumentation, electronics, communication networks and process control. The role of a Control Systems Technician is varied but may involve design, development, maintenance and servicing of plant control systems, within the nuclear and process plant industry. Students completing this apprenticeship may possibly progress onto a Foundation Degree qualification.

7 Process Intermediate Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Intermediate months Assessor led training based in one of our employers, with Technical Certificate studies taking place at one of our Skills Centres per hour minimum. Responsibilities plus: Intermediate Apprenticeship (12-18 months) NVQ Level 2 in Process Industries and Operations Technical Certificate - Level 2 Diploma What will I study as a Process Apprentice with Gen2? Health and safety / environmental issues Process chemistry Process science Process in solids Process in fluids Process plant/plant services Plant systems ICT and communications Instrumentation, measurement and control The role of a Process Apprentice: As a Process Operator you will typically work in a manufacturing company that makes use of large and often complex pieces of machinery and equipment. It will be your duty to keep it operating safely and efficiently, you will also need to take samples of materials used for analysis. Since many manufacturing plants run day and night, you may be required to work shifts. You will also be required to maintain a safe work area to ensure the effective running of plant and equipment. You will be employed by your employer from day one, undertaking your training in the workplace. You will be granted day release in order to study for a Technical Certificate at one of our Skills Centres for at least one day per week.

8 Nuclear Operator Intermediate Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English Language and Science. Minimum age for this programme is 17 at the start of the programme. 24 months West Cumbria 2.73 per hour minimum. What will I study as a Nuclear Operator Apprentice with Gen2? Safe Use of Equipment and Tools Safe Working Practices Accurate Measurements and Readings Basic Maintenance Skills Oxy Fuel Cutting Methods Plasma Cutting Health and Safety Glove Box Training Some examples of Sellafield Ltd training that apprentices will carry out in process or Decommissioning include: Health and Safety courses Building Induction courses Glove Box Operations Training Monitored Workers / Classified Workers courses Respirator Fit Test PVC & Airfed Suit Training Crane Driving Fork Lift Truck Driving Basic Monitoring Techniques Disciplined Operations Use of Power Tools Environmental & Waste Management Training The role of a Nuclear Operator Apprentice: The work carried out by a Nuclear Operator can vary greatly and this programme will prepare learners to engage in both nuclear decommissioning activities and process operations. Nuclear decommissioning involves the safe shutting down and dismantling of nuclear power plants that have reached the end of their energy producing life, ensuring that there is no danger from radioactive materials and no chance of accident to people visiting the site. Process operations entails the operation of large and often complex machinery and equipment, making sure they run safely and efficiently. These skills are transferable to other fields such as environmental restoration or general engineering activities that are carried out within many businesses in the chemical, polymer and petrochemical industries. Year one will be spent giving you a wide range of engineering and nuclear related skills in preparation for assessment on your NVQ Level 2 in the workplace including basic hand skills, maintenance skills, process measurement and control.

9 The Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship scheme is divided into two types of career paths dependent upon employer requirements: 1. Nuclear Plant Operators: These people are trained to operate and maintain chemical and process plants that make a variety of products. Operators will monitor levels of flow, chemicals, temperature, waste products and radiation. They may take samples of products at different stages of the processes in their building and send them to another part of site for analysis for the business, customers, UK and international agencies. Some Plant Operators will be trained in plant control rooms which are automated processes to allow chemicals and products to be moved around the building or site in a controlled manner. Other plants will manufacture products e.g. nuclear fuel pellets or put waste products into containers for UK and overseas customers. What qualifications will I obtain on the Nuclear Plant Operator career path? Responsibilities Level 2 Diploma in Process Operations Level 2 Diploma in Process Technology This is carried out on site placement and the modules will be agreed locally by each plant where the apprentice is assigned to. 2. Decommissioning Operator: The role of the Nuclear Decommissioning Operative is to control and operate basic decommissioning plant and equipment efficiently and safely. They will report and investigate deviations from routine operating conditions and be able to deal with basic process problems. They are given the opportunity to progress to Nuclear Decommissioning Team Leader. What qualifications will I obtain on the Nuclear Decommissioning Operator career path? Responsibilities Technical Certificate BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Engineering or, BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Level 2 Diploma in Decommissioning This is carried out on site placement and the modules will be agreed locally by each plant where the apprentice is assigned to. This apprenticeship is only available in West Cumbria. The first year will be spent training in our Energus facility at Lillyhall and you will be employed by Gen2. The second year will be in the workplace.

10 Health Physics Monitor Intermediate Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: A minimum of four GCSE Grades A-C (including Mathematics, English Language and Science). Minimum age is 18 at the start of the programme, to comply with Classified Workers requirements 24 months West Cumbria 2.73 per hour minimum. Functional skills, personal learning and thinking skills/ employee rights and responsibilities plus: Radiation Safety Practice (RSP) Stage 1 Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Radiological Protection Award in Nuclear Industry Awareness (ANIA) IOSH Working Safely The role of a Health Physics Monitor Apprentice: The principle function of a Health Physics Monitor is to provide a radiological safety and monitoring service to customers in order to meet business needs to defined standards. The role is to monitor radiation dose rates, personnel, surface and airborne contamination, recording the levels detected and responding accordingly. Health Physics Monitors may also be part of the emergency response arrangements. Duties and aspects of the role will also include: Undertake clearance monitoring Function test radiation protection instrumentation Record radiation protection monitoring and survey results Working at heights via the use of ladders and scaffolding Working in confined spaces Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use of Respiratory Protective Equipment such as respirators and breathing apparatus Obtaining information (readings), analysing the information and determining actions Understand the relevant health and safety legislation with reference to the tasks, the plant and the actions required to control hazards To understand and have relevant background knowledge in science, the principles involved in the operation, maintenance of the processes and equipment used You will attend one of our Skills Centres for your initial induction and then you will be placed with your employer.

11 Pipefitting Intermediate / Advanced Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary. Responsibilities plus: Intermediate Apprenticeship (12-18 months) Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations or Certificate in Engineering Construction Activities City and Guilds Certificate in Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship (42 months) NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma in Installing Engineering Plant and Systems Technical Certificate - BTEC Diploma in Engineering OR a craft qualification The role of a Pipefitting Apprentice: Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding. Often working alongside welders they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions. What will I study as a Pipefitting Apprentice with Gen2? 12 Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Higher Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: 5 GCSE Grades A-C, including Mathematics and English Language at Grade B or above. 42 months West Cumbria Minimum wage. What will I study as a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician with Gen2? As a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Apprentice, you will receive training in: Material Science Gain a knowledge of metal types, properties, and composition to support the selection process for nuclear applications. Welding Technology Understand the welding processes including accepted terminology, standards and abbreviations. Welding Inspection Learn about all of the quality control requirements during welding and gain the ability to undertake all three stages of weld inspection, This will also include the requirements for inspection reporting and verification of certification data in accordance with relevant standards NDT Techniques Acquire knowledge of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and understand why and when these techniques are deployed as well as the advantages and limitations of their use. Safety Gain an understanding of the importance of safe working practices at a nuclear facility as well as the relationship between nuclear safety and quality. You will learn the fundamental principles and implications of radiation types, sources, hazards and appropriate control measures. Functional skills, personal learning and thinking skills/ employee rights and responsibilities plus: Level 3 BTEC Engineering Diploma Level 4 BTEC Higher National Certificate Level 2 qualification in a Non-Destructive Testing Method Level 2 Recognised Welding Inspection qualification The role of a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician: The principle function of a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician will be to provide quality control and welding inspection services for the nuclear industry. You will ensure that fabrications meet the exact quality requirements specified in regulations, specifications, standards and detailed engineering documents in an environment where quality standards are paramount and safety is the overriding priority. First Year - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate. Second, Third & Fourth Year - Employer work placement. You will allowed day release to study for your knowledge-based modules.

13 Emergency Fire Service Operations Advanced Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics and English Language. Full, clean driving license. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age by September months Assessor led training based at Sellafield, with Technical Certificate studies taking place our Skills Centre in Workington per hour minimum. Functional skills, personal learning and thinking skills/ employee rights and responsibilities plus: Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Emergency Fire Services Operations (Competence) Level 3 Diploma in Emergency Fire and Rescue Services Operations (Knowledge) What will I study as an Emergency Fire Service Operations apprentice with Gen2? Your initial training will provide you with a range of practical basic fire-fighting and theoretical skills; these will be rigorously tested over an extended period of time to elevate you to a competent level (Demonstration of Skills). The role of Emergency Fire Service Operations Apprentice: The role of a professional fire-fighter at Sellafield is to maintain Nuclear Safety at all times, to save life and property. The role is a highly disciplined technical and multi functional profession. You are required to be physically and mentally fit and have the ability to make instant life saving decisions with clarity of purpose. It is imperative that you have a team player ethic as you will be embedded into a highly skilled team where you will be expected to take on a variety of roles within that team. You will be expected to have a high degree of initiative to ensure that you are able to solve complex problems in often highly stressful situations to save life and to ensure the safety of you and your team members. Once competent in role you will move into Maintenance of Skills Training to ensure that your acquired skills are maintained to the highest of operationally effective standards at all times. You will be employed by Gen2, undertaking your training in the workplace. You will be granted day release in order to study for a Technical Certificate at one of our Skills Centres for at least one day per week.

CAD Manufacturing skills Pattern development The role of a Welding, Fabrication & Plating Apprentice: Fabrication is a discipline which covers a wide range of occupational areas including Welders, Platers, Sheet Metal Workers and Pipe Fitters. Fabricators are essential in all fields of engineering and manufacturing, and need to be able to work in all environments. Fabricators and Welders need to be able to interpret engineering drawings, convert them into metal shapes by using a range of powerful equipment such as guillotines, pipe benders, folders or computer controlled plasma cutting equipment. In many firms a Fabricator will be expected to carry out both fabrication as well as welding work, but in some cases you will specialise in one of the two areas. First year - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres with one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job at your place of work, Second Year Onwards - Employer work placement, with day release for Technical Certificate Study and Gen2 progress assessments every 6 weeks.

15 Project Management Higher Apprenticeship Pre-requisites: Preferred results: GCSE Grades A-C in Mathematics, English and Science and a minimum of 120 UCAS points. Project management Project roles and responsibilities Planning business cases Project lifecycles and project defiinition Project execution plans Risk management Quality Project scheduling Estimating The role of a Project Management Apprentice: As a Project Management Apprentice, you will work within an office environment and some of the roles you are likely to undertake are: Communicating with stakeholders Planning and reviewing projects Meeting with customers Creating and monitoring action plans Estimating budgets You will be based with your employer from the start and will attend a number of block release days at our Skills Centres, to help you achieve your Technical Certificates and Diploma

Please note that Sellafield Ltd also require an A-Level in Chemistry, and GCSE s at Grade B or above. Calibrations Sampling and titrations Conduct investigations and tests Assess data and write reports Dealing with technical data Develop presentation techniques You will attend one of our Skills Centres for your initial induction and then you will be placed with your employer. The role of a Scientific Apprentice: Scientific Technicians perform a wide variety of roles in the nuclear, chemical and manufacturing industries, as well as in academic and research establishments throughout Cumbria. Scientific Technicians are needed to test and calibrate equipment as well as undertake investigations and analyse samples. They are likely to work with hazardous substances, so it will be necessary for you to have a strong understanding of health and safety procedures and safe working practices. During the apprenticeship: You will be aware of health and safety regulations You will be improving your working relations everyday as you are likely to be working in teams You will manage information and use computers You are likely to work with hazardous substances You could help to manage the equipment kept in the stores You will manage data and produce reports You will create presentations on work you have completed

Technical Certificate) Responsibilities Advanced Apprenticeship (24 months) NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Business & Administration VRQ Certificate in Business & Administration Responsibilities What will I study as a Business & Administration Apprentice? As a Business & Administration Apprentice, you will receieve training in practical tasks such as using office equipment and setting up and improving administration systems. You will also gain transferrable skills in areas like project management, report writing, communication and budgeting. The role of a Business & Administration Apprentice: The Gen2 Business & Administration Apprenticeship provides a wide variety of training from basic business administration duties to administration skills necessary to manage teams. Apprentices undertaking this qualification are suitable not only as general administrators but also suitable for specialist roles such as Court Clerks and HR Administrators. You will be based with your employer from the start, where you will be assessed in the workplace. Drop in sessions will be arranged, where you can visit your Gen2 centre for additional training. It has a pick and mix design which allows learners to choose units that are applicable to their workplace and employer. It will support and develop the skills and knowledge needed to be proficient and specialise in developing, using, supporting and maintaining a range of IT systems and software. IT is now an integral part of any business and this qualification allows you to develop IT systems and processes to support businesses and staff across a variety of activities. You will be based with your employer from the start and will attend one of our Skills Centres one day per week to study towards your Technical Certificates and Diploma.

20 Apprenticeship recruitment schedule January Apply via the Gen2 website from the beginning of January. You will then be redirected to our recruitment portal. February Applications for engineering generally close at the end of February. Aptitude tests usually start from February half term onwards. You will be invited via to book your aptitude testing slot. March Successful candidates will be notified by . If you meet the criteria for Sellafield, you will be notified by and asked to book an interview slot. If you do not meet their criteria or do not want to be considered for Sellafield, then your CV will now be sent out to employers who will contact you directly. April - June Interviews will commence. All those applying in the North and South of Cumbria, your CV will be sent to local employers looking to recruit apprentices. July Gen2 will send out offer letters to all successful applicants. Those who do not receive an offer will be placed on the reserve list or could then apply for our other programmes including Foundation Learning and Traineeships.
