Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 39,000 students and 3,500 employees in 89 schools and other sites. The Department of Facilities requires a Carpenter Apprentice to perform varied responsible duties of moderate complexity with minimal supervision. The employee is responsible to the Portable Modular Classroom Supervisor and the Manager. Assignments vary considerably depending on the unit served. They must be qualified for their work by virtue of journeyman training and experience and show considerable expertise and working knowledge in their unit. It is required that they display a complete understanding of the overall activities served. Work may involve procedures of a technical nature. Some positions in this class may entail supervisory responsibility. In these cases the employee must achieve smooth work flow by delegating assignments and explaining procedures. The work requires the use of hand and power tools. This is a permanent, full-time position (40 hrs. /week) commencing as soon as possible with a salary of $ per month. (Currently under review) Note: The salary rate for Apprentice Carpenters will be in accordance with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Training Program. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Perform a variety of skilled carpentry work on buildings and schools; Repair window or door frames; Rebuild cupboards, shelves and other school equipment; Repair floors and interior and exterior sheathing; Replace and Repair locks; Fabricate a variety of items from wood or other materials within a carpenter shop; Measure, square, saw, plane, glue and clamp wooden sections into special shapes, using table, band and radial saws, jointers, drills and shapers, and use prefabricated materials for subsequent installation in the schools; Construct portable units and other small buildings; Lay out according to blue print, erect framework, siding, flooring and roofing, and complete inside trim to required specifications; Keep time and material records and estimates material required; Clean up around the work site; Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor. Qualifications: Must be currently employed in the trade and possession of a current Alberta Journeyman Carpenter certificate or minimum fourth year Apprentice with several years experience. Ability to read plans, elevation drawings, and specifications and fabricate items according to a predetermined plan; Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry; An understanding of the principles that apply to wood construction, use of shop and hand tools, properties of various materials and techniques used to build, modify and repair structures to withstand varying loads; Ability to work independently and in cooperation with other employees; Good communication skills and fluency in the English language both verbal and written is mandatory; Possession of a complete set of hand tools applicable to the work; Ability to handle the physical demands of the job using appropriate lifting tools and techniques (constantly lifting up to 30 kilograms); A valid driver's license. The work requires the use of hand and power tools. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Perform a variety of skilled carpentry work such as repairing windows and door frames. 2. Rebuild cupboards, shelves and other school equipment, as well as repairing the interior and exterior sheathing and replace locks. 3. Fabricate a variety of items from wood or other materials within a carpentry shop 4. Measure, square, saw, plane and clamp wooden sections into special shapes, using table, band and radial saws, jointers, drills and shapers, and use prefabricated materials for subsequent installation in the schools 5. Lay out according to blue print, erect framework, siding, flooring and roofing, and complete inside trim to required specifications. 6. Assist department staff on a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences 7. Work on the construction of portable classrooms and small structures 8. Assist in clean-up of work sites 9. Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards 10. Knowledge and Experience Skills and Abilities High school, plus of a current Alberta journeyman carpenter certificate Knowledge of shop mathematics, including elementary geometry Knowledge of principles that apply to wood construction, of the use of shop and hand-tools, of properties of various Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to relate well with other trades, school principals, teachers and general public.

Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Outlook, Excel and electronic attendance system Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations Good communication skills and fluent in English both verbally and written Good organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and lift up to 30 kilograms A valid class 5 driver s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton. Possession of a full kit of recognized basic hand tools. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Describe the direction the job receives to perform the work and the type of review completed by the supervisor both during and upon completion of the task. The job works with s independence after receiving direction from the supervisor. Work is reviewed on completion to ensure the objectives and work standards have been met. The incumbent will receive instruction on new tasks from the supervisor.
