With Phillip Island now fo free efforts on other pest animals are now increasing and a unique opportunity has arisen to join the Pest Animal Program within the Conservation Department at Phillip Island Nature Parks. This position includes the development, implementation and evaluation of the current pest animal management programs, with the primary goal to minimise the threat to the Nature Parks environmental assets. This position will implement an invasive predator monitoring program, feral cat control across Nature Parks environments, and will support other pest programs, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning. To be successful in this position you will need to address the following criteria: Relevant Natural Resource Management and/or field eperience; A sound understanding and practical field eperience in vertebrate pest management principles and practices, especially the management of foes and cats; Eperience in wildlife monitoring and analysis using multiple techniques, including camera trapping; Ecellent writing skills and report writing; and Efficiency in database management. 2 Position Description Pest Animal Project Officer ORGANISATION OVERVIEW Phillip Island Nature Parks (Nature Parks) is a leading conservation and ecotourism organisation. Established in 1996 by the State Government of Victoria, the Nature Parks manages over 1,805 hectares of Crown land which includes a variety of coastal reserves, wetlands, and woodlands. Each year the Nature Parks attract over 1.3 million visitors to our five world-class ecotourism attractions including the iconic Penguin Parade, the Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies Centre, Wild Oceans EcoBoat tours, the Koala Conservation Centre and Churchill Island Heritage Farm. JOB SPECIFICATION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES DUTIES Pest animal Undertake daily on ground actions relating to the Conservation Departments integrated
4 management Pest Management Strategy (PMS) including administration, evaluation and strategic development. Stakeholder communications Data Management Maintain current knowledge of legislation and policies relevant to pest animal control within Victoria. Undertake monitoring and analysis to inform the strategic decisions related to pest animal control. Community Communication with local farmers, DELWP, BCSC and other eternal stakeholders to achieve integrated PMS outcomes Contribute to the Nature Parks Environment Community Advisory Meetings, inter-agency meetings and relevant events when required. Assist in providing leadership and direction to environment staff and the community in pest animal management Develop and foster partnerships with the community, government and non-government agencies Compliance Assist with compliance activities including regular patrols and monitoring of permit/license holders to make sure they abide by licence conditions, determinations and regulations Planning and report writing Wildlife Emergency management Policies and Procedures Health, Safety and Wellbeing Support the patrolling and monitoring of Nature Parks natural assets. Assist with the preparation of reports Assist with strategic environmental planning Assist with Emergency wildlife response for oil spills and bushfire Assist with shoreline clean up during oil spills or similar events, if required Assist with wildlife rescue programs e.g. Short-tailed Shearwater Maintain understanding of current and developed policies and procedures Develop and update policies and procedures when required Ensure compliance of policies and procedures Assist in the management, use and storage of firearms, ammunition, materials for 1080 baiting program including permits Adhere to safe work method statements. Comply with and follow OH&S work practices Identify and report workplace hazards Actively participate in safety and wellbeing activities Ensuring the safety of all employees, visitors and contractors In addition to the essential responsibilities and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for: Promoting and respecting the practices of equal opportunity, diversity and equity in all the interactions at Nature Parks, which includes internal and eternal (visitors, contractors and volunteers) groups. 5 WORKING AND ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS Availability to work on a 7 day weekly roster, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays and special events. Additional hours will be required as per business requirements within term of the contract. Low < 5Kgs and/or < 2 hours duration Moderate 5-10Kgs and/or 2-6 hours duration High > 10kgs and/or 6-8 hours duration Working in an outdoor environment Sitting Standing Walking (including over rough terrain or stairs) Squatting / Kneeling / Bending / Twisting Pushing / Pulling / Lifting / Carrying / Reaching Computer usage (Keyboard/mouse/tablet) Use tools (Shovels, hammers, and motorised hand tools) Operate machinery (Chainsaws, Tractors, and All Terrain Vehicles) Drive a Vehicle (Manual and golf buggy) QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES QUALIFICATIONS/CE RTIFICATES Relevant tertiary qualification in Natural Resource Management and/or relevant field eperience Agricultural Chemical Users Permit with 1080 endorsement or willingness to obtain Victorian Firearms Licence Driver s Licence with ability to drive manual vehicle First Aid Certificate Police Check ATV Quad Bike Accreditation or the willingness to self-obtain EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Essential Essential Relevant Natural Resource Management and/or field eperience A sound understanding and practical field eperience in vertebrate pest management principles and practices, especially the management of foes and cats Technical knowledge and eperience with the safe handling of 1080 poison, PAPP and firearms Desirable Desirable Eperience in managing pests such as rabbits and hares Eperience in handling dogs such as working or conservation dogs Authorised Officer accreditation and eperience enforcing regulations ATV (quad bike) eperience and current qualification Knowledge of GIS mapping
6 Demonstrated land management eperience with a focus on pest animal control for conservation. Proven knowledge of compliance frameworks and management strategies for pest animal control Efficiency in database management Ecellent writing skills and report writing Eperience in wildlife monitoring and analysis using multiple techniques, including camera trapping. Strategic planning and development systems such as ArcView Patrolling and monitoring Has direct eperience working on an invasive pest animal program Management skills Have directly developed an invasive pest strategic plan or contributed to one within Australasia.
