General Works Assistants CiviLake, a diverse, innovative construction and maintenance business unit within the Operations Group of Lake Macquarie City Council, has up to 15 permanent full time employment opportunities for successful candidates to broaden their skills and expand their careers. Reporting directly to the relevant Site Supervisor, you will join a motivated and driven team to undertake field duties associated with the following areas: road works concrete works erosion and sediment controls drainage and infrastructure parks and gardens bush regeneration tree operations landscape maintenance You will have: a current WorkCover Construction Induction Card or equivalent a current class C manual drivers licence relevant WorkCover license/tickets to meet operational needs proven literacy and numeracy skills and an ability to undertake workplace learning understanding of environmental controls demonstrated commitment to providing high level customer service proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment demonstrated ability to perform duties in a reliable and enthusiastic manner Salary: $42,350 to $45,588 per annum plus superannuation Benefits of joining Lake Macquarie City Council include: 38-hour working week 3-week RDO system long service leave after 5 years education assistance training and development programs corporate fitness program free parking Please note as part of Lake Macquarie City Council's recruitment process, prior to an offer of employment being made, recommended candidates may be subject to the following pre employment checks: numeracy and literacy test practical test medical assessment with council doctor Closing Date: 5pm Tuesday 8 October 2013

3 1 Organisational and Purpose Context CiviLake is a business unit within the Operations Group of Lake Macquarie City Council providing construction and maintenance services to the city s assets and for external clients. This position is responsible for undertaking a variety of field duties associated with the construction and maintenance of roads, drainage, parks, buildings and associated facilities. 2 Key Criteria Essential Demonstrated ability to perform duties in a reliable and enthusiastic manner Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment Demonstrated commitment to providing high level customer service Understanding of environmental controls Proven literacy and numeracy skills and an ability to undertake workplace learning Current WorkCover Construction Induction Card or equivalent Current class C drivers licence Relevant WorkCover license/ticket to meet operational needs School certificate or relevant TAFE qualifications in Civil Works Highly Desirable RTA Traffic Controller Certificate (stop/slow) Experience in Civil Construction and Maintenance Operations Experience in the use of minor plant and equipment (e.g. air tools, power tools) Desirable Certificate II or III in a field relevant to local government roles Basic experience in hard and soft Civil Construction and Maintenance Operations Undertake Corporate and function specific training as required 3 Duties 1. Work as directed to carry out a broad range of skills associated with the construction and maintenance of roads, drainage, parks, buildings, including but not limited to mowing, landscaping maintenance, tar patching, traffic control, road signage, graffiti removal General Works Assistant - Civilake Page 2 of 5
4 2. Operate small items of plant in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements e.g. jack hammer, lawn mower, including ride on, whipper snipper, edger, blower vac etc 3. Respond to enquiries or refer to the appropriate Council Officer for resolution 4. Comply with Council s Work Health and Safety and Code of Conduct Policies 5. Communicate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders 6. Ensure that works are undertaken in an environmentally responsible manner under direction 7. Ensure a high level of customer service is maintained at all times 8. Complete all paperwork and documentation relevant to the position 9. Provide general Works Assistants skills as directed in an effective and professional manner including undertaking reasonable overtime as required 10. Occasionally work unsupervised 4 Relevant Position Information The incumbent will be based, in either, Projects, Services or Resource Sections of CiviLake. The incumbent will be required to learn and apply a broad range of skills associated with the maintenance of roads, drainage, parks, buildings, and related facilities in accordance with appendix A Opportunities exist for overtime as required in order to meet schedules and departmental needs This position has a physical component that includes frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, occasional squatting, and reaching above shoulder level This is an outdoor position The incumbent must be willing to use their own vehicle to travel to work sites as required Please note prior to an offer of employment being made, recommended candidates may be subject to a medical assessment with Council Doctor.
