3 1 Dissertatin mdule Dissertatin (DIS) - Research Methds 8 ECTS + - Practical wrk 4 ECTS + - Research paper 18 ECTS 30 ECTS Cmpulsry Dissertatin 3rd semester - ASSESSMENT DIS Individual wrk Dissertatin Prpsal - written paper prpsing the research tpic, justifying its relevance, with research aims and bjectives, research methdlgy, methds and techniques, literature, develping wrking hyptheses, indicating expected results - assessed by assessment grade (5-10). Practical wrk - written practical wrk reprt is assessed n pass/fail basis nly. The Dissertatin research paper assessment is perfrmed n the basis f written dissertatin research paper (apprx wrds) and ral presentatin and defence in public assessed by the final assessment grade (5-10) fr the research paper, which is the final grade fr the Dissertatin mdule. Students are required t pass all the taught mdules befre they can prgress t their dissertatin. In additin t the lectures fr the six taught mdules, students are required t attend lectures and cmputer labs fr the dissertatin mdule in the third semester. Students are required t submit a detailed 2000 wrd research prpsal in the third semester. The dissertatin/research paper (apprximately 15,000 wrds) is expected t be cmpleted by the end f the third semester. Aims This mdule aims t prepare students t undertake dissertatin. Students will be given an verview f different business research techniques and hw t plan, execute and present a prject r dissertatin. They will have the pprtunity t develp and refine their ideas and bjectives and this will prvide a basis fr mre detailed discussin with supervisrs. Learning Outcmes Knwledge On successful cmpletin f this mdule, the student will be able t: 1. select an apprpriate prject/dissertatin tpic and develp realistic aims and bjectives; 2. develp a sund research methdlgy t meet the prject/dissertatin aims; 3. demnstrate hw different types and surces f data cntribute t research prcess; 4. relate hw qualitative and quantitative research techniques meet research aims thrugh an apprpriate methdlgy; 5. undertake the research prject with explicit presentatin f results achieved; 3

Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategies Students have t pass all the taught mdules befre they can prgress t their dissertatin. The assessment f the dissertatin mdule is fcused at individual research prject realizatin by the students within an area f interest that they chse and decide upn tgether with the mentr. The research prject is defined with a research tpic within the disciplines and mdules taught within the Master prgram and it is suggested by the students expressing their field f special interest, relating t their present emplyment and prblems, etc. The mentr can be any mdule leader and prfessr engaged within the study prgram. There is a precise prcedure at the Faculty defining the steps t apply fr the dissertatin tpic and fr the mentr t be defined. Later in the prcess, a cmmissin f three prfessrs in the field f the dissertatin research study is defined and this cmmissin is reviewing the dissertatin and it is defended in frnt f this cmmissin and public. Assessment Scheme Assessment is accmplished as a three-step prcedure: 1. The Research Methds sub-mdule assessed by Dissertatin Prpsal, written paper prpsing the research tpic, justifying its relevance, with research aims and bjectives, research methdlgy, methds and techniques, literature, develping wrking hyptheses, indicating expected results. Dissertatin prpsal shws candidates' capacity t prepare the dissertatin as a research prject, with clear understanding f the prblems and issues raised, als shwing the candidates' capability t apprach the research in a systematic way. Dissertatin Prpsal is assessed by assessment grade (5-10) and brings 8 ECTS (Research Methds). 2. Practical wrk sub-mdule is assessed by written practical wrk reprt. The reprt is signed bth by cmpany representative and dissertatin mentr, cnfirming successful cmpletin f practical assignment. It is assessed n pass/fail basis and brings 4 ECTS (Practical wrk). 4
5 3. After having successfully passed the research methds and practical wrk sub-mdules, student prgress t dissertatin research paper. The Dissertatin research paper assessment is perfrmed n the basis f written dissertatin research paper (apprx wrds) and ral presentatin and defence in public. The academic cmmissin cnsisting f minimum three prfessrs in the field, amng which ne is a mentr, assesses the submitted dissertatin/research paper and after ral presentatin and defence prvides the final assessment grade (5-10) fr the research paper, which is the final grade fr the Dissertatin mdule. Successful cmpletin f this stage brings 18 ECTS (Research paper). Dissertatin mdule is cmplete when all three stages have been successfully accmplished bringing sum f 30 ECTS. Learning Materials 1. 8 4 Dissertatin Prpsal The first assessed stage f yur dissertatin wrk is the submissin f a written prpsal. Yur prpsal must be submitted n the Dissertatin Prpsal Frm available in electrnic frmat n the Master Service website (UB FOS) It must include the fllwing: The wrking title f yur dissertatin (subject t change) A brief verview f the cmpany r market yu are cnsidering studying, the research prblem identified, and yur reasns fr chsing this area fr yur investigatin. 9 5 The Dissertatin research paper Yur final dissertatin shuld be arund wrds lng. Assessment f the dissertatin Yur wrk will be assessed by three examiners, including yur mentr. The final dissertatin is assessed fllwing the criteria given belw. The final grade is then allcated in accrdance with the University s 20-pint grading scale when the markers have cnsidered the verall merits f the dissertatin. 16 6.8 Intrductin Typically, the Intrductin includes the fllwing (a) Backgrund - which briefly explains and intrduces the subject f yur investigatin. (b) Study aim and bjectives r research questins - clear and precise statement f the aims f yur prject as well as the bjectives. Objectives can be stated in the frm f research questins. Nte that research questins are equivalent t bjectives. Yu cannt, therefre, state bth bjectives and research questins. Make sure that the bjectives r the research questins cntribute directly t achieving the study aim. (c) An intrductin t the way yur reprt is structured. 6.9 Literature Review Accrding t Clin Fisher (2004) (Researching and Writing a Dissertatin fr Business Students, FT Prentice Hall) the literature review shuld: Identify the apprpriate academic and/r prfessinal fields f literature Describe the main themes in the literature that are imprtant and useful t yur study. Identify the cnnectins r discntinuities between the themes in the literature In this very imprtant sectin f yur dissertatin yu shuld critically evaluate the literature (arguments and reliability f different surces) and create a cherent sequence f arguments frm the themes drawn frm the literature Research Methdlgy and methds In this sectin, accrding t Fisher (2004) yu shuld: Discuss the nature f the questins yu are asking and chse an apprpriate methdlgical stance fr answering them Describe, explain and justify the research methds yu are using, Describe the practical and technical aspects f cnducting the research Discuss any ethical issues cnnected with the prject 6.11 Research Results and Analysis f Findings Fisher (2004) writes that yu shuld: Describe what yu fund ut and what it means Refer back t the literature review and yur cnceptual framewrk. Use the literature t interrgate and evaluate yur research material and vice versa. Figures and tables shuld be used t summarise the results, where apprpriate. Results and findings shuld be cmpared with the hyptheses r expectatins held befre the study. 16
17 6.12 Cnclusins, Recmmendatins, Actin Plans Finally, Fisher (2004) advises that yu: Summarise the main argument f yur dissertatin Either discuss the validity and reliability f the findings and arguments r reflectively critique the accunt prvided in yur dissertatin. Frame the cnclusins and recmmendatins if apprpriate. Discuss any issues cncerning the implementatin f the cnclusins r recmmendatins. It is imprtant that all cnclusins are clearly linked t the bjectives r research questins and ultimately the study aim. It is a gd practice t present cnclusins under the subheadings f the bjectives r research questins and the aim t make sure that all the relevant research issues are cvered. Cnclusins t yur investigatin will nrmally be supprted by recmmendatins n ways f imprving r enhancing the functin r prcedure under investigatin. Cnclusins shuld always be related t cntent presented in the main bdy f the text (plus appendices), s yu shuld nt intrduce new material. It is gd practice t identify in the cnclusins the lcatin f the evidence t which yu are referring, by including a reference t the apprpriate page r appendix References Whenever yu use the wrds, cncepts r ideas f anther persn, yu must give full credit t them, by means f a frmal reference. This needs t be dne within the text f yur dissertatin and in a list f references/bibligraphy at the end. We expect a cmpleted dissertatin t be full f references t the wrks f thers, and t cntain bth qutatins and paraphrases frm relevant surces. The use f many references is a psitive feature f a gd dissertatin, and marks are given fr crrect citatin and referencing. The University and UB FOS will take serius actin against any student wh plagiarises whether thrugh negligence, flishness r deliberate intent. Make sure written material, ideas, theries, frmulae, etc are acknwledged thrugh the use f qutatin marks, references and bibligraphies. Infrmatin n the crrect way f acknwledging wrk frm ther surces is available frm It is essential that students retain all paperwrk assciated with their research, including cpies f secndary data surces, evidence f primary data cllectin (riginal questinnaires) and evidence f data analysis Appendices Appendices are nt cunted as being within the wrd limitatin f the dissertatin (15000 wrds) but must nt exceed 25 percent f the text. Material fr appendices, e.g. rganisatin charts, cpies f questinnaires, sales turnver fr particular prducts fr particular time perids shuld be letter referenced in the text, e.g. see Appendix A, see Appendix B, etc. It is als helpful if the appendices sectin is preceded by a separate cntents page e.g. Appendix A: The Survey Questinnaire, Appendix B: Reginal Sales Turnver, etc. (Smetimes yu may wish t supplement the arguments advanced in the main bdy f the text by using 17

One cmmn practice is t number each pint in the text, referring the reader t the ftnte at the bttm f the page. 7 Plagiarism The fllwing sectin has been extracted frm the Middlesex University s 24-7 website "Plagiarism means using anther's wrk withut giving credit. Yu must put thers' wrds in qutatin marks and cite yur surce(s) and must give citatins when using thers' ideas, even if thse ideas are paraphrased in yur wn wrds." Every semester MUSU has t defend dzens f students wh have been accused f plagiarism, cllusin r ther examples f what the University calls 'academic miscnduct'. Smetimes students have been caught just plain cheating. Often it is an inncent mistake - a misunderstanding abut what cnstitutes plagiarism; perhaps a student has written their references incrrectly. THE PENALTY IS THE SAME whether yu cheated, r whether yu have been negligent in failing t use qutatin marks and prperly cite the wrk f thers. Yu might have t repeat the mdule with a maximum grade f 16 - r yu might be thrwn ff the curse. AVOID CATCHING PLAGIARISM! The wrk presented fr assessment must be entirely yur wn.
