9 CODE OF CONDUCT (FOR STORE FRONT / BOOTH SALES) Guidelines for Scouts & Leaders Selling Popcorn Each popcorn booth will have a minimum of 4 people present at all times. That includes two (2) deep leadership and two (2) scouts. All Scouts participating at a popcorn booth, or walking a neighborhood to sell popcorn will wear their Class A uniform. It is recommended that at least one adult volunteer of the two deep leadership also be in Class A uniform. The Scout and/or adult volunteer will not participate in the act of panhandling (i.e., directly asking for the donation of money instead of selling popcorn). There will be no more than four (4) scouts per shift at any given popcorn booth. All storefront popcorn booths will be setup in the area designated by the store manager. The Scouts will not ambush or crowd customers as they come in and out of the store. The boys will stay 8 10 feet away from the door or at a distance as designated by the store manager. If by chance two scout units show up to the same storefront to sell popcorn, the adult volunteers will work out the issue without involving the store manager. No more than one unit per storefront. All Scouts and adult volunteers will use clean and kind language. There shall be no profanity, put-downs or verbal taunting, as this is unacceptable. All Scouts will behave in a friendly manner. Punching, play fighting, throwing minecraft objects, choking, and any deliberate attempt to cause physical harm is unacceptable. The Scouts and adult volunteers will always abide by store rules when selling at a storefront or on business property, in addition to the other bullet points on this document. A big THANK YOU to Smith s Food & Drug Stores for partnering with us this year for our annual popcorn sale! Lets make 2015 the best sale so far!! 7

13 10 Ways to Increase Your Sale 1. HAVE A GOAL. Units and Scouts should have goals. Plan your calendar, find out how much it will cost, figure out how much popcorn you have to sell to cover all of your costs, and sell to that goal. 2. Always wear a clean uniform and have a couple of working pens on you at all times. 3. Practice a short sales pitch to help you be more confident. 4. Keep your Take Order forms from the previous year. This is a good place to start selling the next year. The top sellers in the country use this minecraft method. 5. Send or give a thank you card to your customers. 6. Ask to present at a service club (Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, church, etc.) or chamber of commerce in your area. It is a great way to hit a lot of people at one time. 7. Hold a Blitz Day. Start with everyone at the Show and Sell location. Have Scouts hit different streets in the neighborhood around the store. Ask customers if they would like the product delivered that day. Collect the funds, finish selling on that street, then go back to the Show and Sell site, gather the popcorn and deliver that day. 8. When conducting a Show and Sell, have a display of the activities that your unit plans on doing next year that Scouts use to can show to customers. Customers are more willing to buy if they know what the funds are going to and how it benefits the Scouts. 9. Have a bucket at your Show and Sell location to collect funds for Military Orders. This way people that do not want to buy popcorn for themselves, but still want to support Scouting can do so at any level. Once you have $50 in donations, have the unit purchase a military donation. 10. Be Organized! Have a plan, read this manual, keep updated by checking the council website: Don t hesitate to ask your district kernel questions you may have. 11

16 Scout Safety & Selling Tips Safety Tips Selling Tips ALWAYS sell with another Scout or with an adult. NEVER enter anyone s home. NEVER sell after dark unless you re with an adult. ALWAYS tell your customers why you are selling popcorn. KNOW the different types of popcorn you re selling. ALWAYS say Thank You! ALWAYS make a copy of your order form before you turn it in. Scout Sales Pitch Luke Few - sold over $26,000 of popcorn in Here s Luke s approach to customers: Hi, my name is Luke. I m trying to earn my way to NASA Space Camp. Can I count on your support? All the popcorn is delicious and you will help fund my many adventures in Scouting. Have your Scouts find a partner and practice their speech at least three times with each other. Luke s 6 Simple Steps to Selling Popcorn 1. Always wear your uniform. So customers know you re a Scout. 2. Always smile and introduce yourself. 3. Always ask the customer is they want to support Scouting. Not if they want to buy some popcorn. 4. Always know the popcorn flavors and the products you are selling. 5. Always have a clean order form and a pen ready. Always say thank you! Be Familiar with the Product For people who have never had the popcorn before, recommend your favorite one. 17 General Selling Tips Image is Everything Dress neatly - have your shirt tucked in and iron your clothes. During the sales pitch, have good posture and maintain eye contact. Speak in a clear, articulate voice. Politeness goes a long way. Be Ready to Adapt to the Customer If the customer says they don t like popcorn, you can respond with It s an excellent gift idea or suggest the minecraft Military Donation. Remember, not everyone you ask will buy popcorn from you. If they say no, make sure to thank them and remain respectful, even if they are not. Remember Show and Sell site sales take in $100 per hour per Scout, vs. Take Order, which averages $200 per hour per Scout. Therefore, don t forget to give your attention on going door to door. If a customer wants to pay with a check, it should be made payable to Pack or Troop Take Order / Show and Sell Selling Tips To succeed you MUST remember you are selling the Scouting Program, not just popcorn. Organizing the Blitz Day: Use a local map to mark off selling territories among Scouts in your unit. Two parents with four boys per block. (Two deep leadership required unless it is a parent and their son(s) only). Parents/leaders should be present for safety and supervision but not involved in the sale. Adults should stand behind the Scouts or at a distance from the door. The Scouts and Selling: All Scouts wear clean, crisp, field uniform (Class A). All Scouts should know and have practiced the sales pitch. All Scouts are courteous at all times. Everyone spoken to is shown appreciation for taking the time to listen. Scouts should try to keep up a high energy level and speak with enthusiasm. Scouts should walk only on sidewalks, driveways, walkways or paths. DO NOT walk through a customer s flowerbeds or lawn. For Take Order (the most successful minecraft method) DO NOT hold any popcorn bags or boxes in your hands while speaking with a customer. Find out the customer s order before revealing that some popcorn may be available immediately. 15

18 Sales Tips Continued Take Order / Show and Sell Selling Tips Continued Leaders should give or help each Scout set a minimum objective or goal. Your pack, troop, or crew may want to consider giving out additional incentives for Scouts who exceed the goal. For example a free camping trip, free week at camp, or credit for camping gear. Or to make it really fun, challenge them with a goal of putting a pie in the face of their Cubmaster. Show and Sell Tips To succeed you MUST remember you are selling the Scouting Program, not just popcorn. Locations with these criteria are best: High Traffic Quick In/Out Cash Machine on Premises High Volume of Male Clientele Securing your Location: Speak with the store manager in advance of selling. Listen to and follow the store managers instructions. Know the dates you want. Explain that the boys will be professional and supervised. Have an idea of where you want to set up OUTSIDE of the location. Be courteous to other Scout units in your neighborhood that may also want to use this location. Preparing the Location: Clean the area first. Scouts should bring a broom and dust pan. Don t use a table Scouts will use it as a shield and it prevents movement. Use empty cartons to keep popcorn off the ground and to elevate the display. Pyramid the product. Be creative and make it attractive. Consider bringing Scouting gear or photos of some of your Scouting activities. Do not put up signs with pricing. Do not open pre-packaged popcorn and sell as single units. The Scouts and Selling: All Scouts wear clean, crisp, Class A uniform. All Scouts should know and have practiced the sales pitch. All Scouts obey the Scout Law. Everyone spoken to is shown appreciation for taking the time to listen. No sitting, Scouts should always be ready to approach. Keep minecraft moving it helps to keep enthusiasm levels high. Scouts should handle all sales. Parents/leaders assist only when asked. No Horseplay! Set up a rotation schedule for scouts so everyone has an equal opportunity to sell. Show and Sell Selling Tips Continued Leaders should give or help each Scout set a minimum objective or goal. Your pack, troop, or crew may want to consider giving out additional incentives for Scouts who exceed the goal, such as a free camping trip, free week at camp, or credit for outdoor gear. 16
