1 VBS 2018 Children s Missins Rtatin Base Cnference Plan 1 VBS 2018 CHILDREN S MISSIONS ROTATION BASE CONFERENCE PLAN (2 HOURS) Purpse Statement This tw-hur plan is designed t train and equip missins rtatin leaders t lead the missins rtatin fr LifeWay s Game On! TM VBS. Needed Resurces VBS 2018 Missins Rtatin Leader Guide with DVD-ROM Remve the DVD-ROM and the Insert Items frm the guide and display them alngside the guide n a fcal table. VBS 2018 Tableclth VBS 2018 Felt Pennant VBS 2018 Small Inflatable Sprts Balls (ptinal) VBS 2018 Supersized Backdrp (ptinal) VBS 2018 Music fr Kids CD VBS 2018 Megaphnes (remve 2 frm the package f 5) VBS 2018 Bkmarks (1 bkmark per cnferee; 50 per pack) DVD-ROM items 1 9 Print the ROM items, slide int clear plastic page prtectrs, and place inside a 3-ring binder fr easy reference during the cnference. Insert Item 1: Pland Pster Cut apart and display n the fcal wall. Insert Item 2: 10:12 Sprts Ministry Pster Cut apart and display n the fcal wall. Insert Item 3: Cl Off Campaign Gal Chart Display n the fcal wall. OPTIONAL: Cpy the chart and attach t a clipbard with a highlighter. Beginning at the bttm sectin f the cler, write cnference steps 1 10 n the levels f the cler. As each step is cmpleted in the cnference, invite a cnferee t highlight r clr in the area. This will nt nly help yu stay n track, it will als prvide a visual fr cnferees t see hw the item wrks. Insert Item 4: Missins Prject Letter Insert Item 5: Prayer Pennants Phtcpy nt cardstck and cut apart. If printed in black and white, glue each pennant t a piece f clred cnstructin paper, then cut slightly larger than the pennant t create a clrful brder. Label the back f each pennant in pencil with the day it is used (Days 1 5). Insert Item 6: Sprts Cards Phtcpy nt cardstck and cut apart alng the dtted lines. Insert Item 7: Tally Sheet Attach t a clipbard and display n r near the fcal wall. Insert Item 8: Water Bttle Labels Phtcpy 5 labels, cut apart, and clr. Use clear packing tape t attach each label t plastic bttled waters. Each label features the pint fr each day f VBS. Number the water bttles 1 5 accrding t the pint n each label. Insert Item 9: Playbk Cards Phtcpy nt cardstck. Print the wrds f 2 Peter 1:3 n the back f the paper. Then turn ver and cut apart the cards accrding t the instructins. Reprducibles (leader guide, p. 24) Cpy 1 per cnferee. Handut (at end f dcument) Cpy 1 per cnferee. Small basket Label the basket, Everyday Supplies. Place a Bible, washable markers, scissrs, paper, and tape inside the basket. Variety f sprts equipment Place items arund the rm as decratins. Cnstructin paper (4 different clrs) Cut pennant shapes frm cnstructin paper. Cut 3 pennants in 1 clr, 3 in a different clr, and 1 pennant frm each remaining clr, fr a ttal f 8 pennants. Write the fllwing infrmatin n the pennants as described: Activity

String and 5 clthespins Attach the string alng the fcal wall. Clip all 5 Prayer Pennants (Item 5) t the string with clthespins. TV/DVD player CD Player Rm Setup Arrange chairs in rws facing the fcal wall t resemble benches fund in a lcker rm, dugut, r sideline. If a chalkbard r whitebard is present in the rm, draw Xs, Os, and cnnecting arrws t resemble a cach s play-by-play. Cver a table with a VBS 2018 Tableclth and display the curriculum resurces alngside tabletp decratins such as pm-pms, megaphnes, and small sprts balls. Attach the VBS 2018 Felt Pennant n the fcal wall. Place the Missins DVD in the DVD Player. Teaching Steps 1. Welcme (5 minutes) Welcme cnferees t Team Missins. Encurage cnferees t lk at the decratins arund the rm and explain that Team Missins (alng with all ther rtatins) can be decrated any way they chse. Intrduce yurself and share a sprts-related fact abut yurself with the grup, such as a sprt yu played, a sprt yu like t watch, r anther hbby yu enjy. Take a quick pll f cnferees t discver what sprts they enjy playing, watching, r experiencing. Distribute a handut t each cnferee. 2. Guess the Sprt (5 minutes) Invite a vlunteer t chse ne f the Sprts Cards (Item 6) and silently act ut the sprt fund n the card fr the grup t guess. Lead the grup t guess. Once, the sprt has been crrectly identified, chse anther vlunteer and play again. Cntinue until n cards remain. Say: Peple like t play all kinds f sprts. This year in missins rtatin, kids are ging t learn hw sprts are being used arund the wrld t tell peple abut Jesus. Explain that this activity is als fund n Day 1 in the leader guide. Nte that many f the activities cnferees will be participating in tday are versins f activities fund in the leader guide. 3. Check the Equipment (10 minutes) Mentin that almst every single sprt requires sme kind f equipment t play r prepare fr the game. Pint ut the Equipment Checklist fund n the handut. Invite cnferees t walk arund the rm and check ff each item n the list nce it is fund. As cnferees begin t lk fr the last item (Daily Supplies), invite them t take a seat and yu will help them discver the last bit f missing equipment needed. Review the Equipment Checklist and ask vlunteers t pint ut where each piece f equipment is lcated in the rm. Use the fllwing infrmatin t review the imprtance f each item listed.

3 VBS 2018 Children s Missins Rtatin Base Cnference Plan 3 VBS 2018 Missins Rtatin Leader Guide with DVD-ROM This is the g-t resurce fr everything needed fr leading missins. It includes teaching prcedures, hw t prepare, biblical cntent fr each day, decrating suggestins, large grup adaptatins, and a helpful Get Started sectin n page 1. Anyne leading kids in missins rtatin needs a leader guide. Missins DVD Lcated n the inside frnt cver f the leader guide. This DVD cntains tw missin vides fr each day, ne highlighting internatinal missins and the ther highlighting a sprts ministry lcated in the United States. If a DVD player/tv is unavailable, use the missin stry summaries fund in the leader guide n pages Read thrugh the summaries befre shwing each vide t familiarize yurself with the material. Insert Items Full clr teaching helps lcated in the back f the leader guide that pull ut easily. The items are tw-sided, with the frnt side being psters fr display and the backside reserved fr reprducible items. Phtcpy directly frm the insert pages, r print them frm the DVD-ROM. Cpy every item befre cutting the psters fr display. NOTE: The item number is nt listed fr the Water Bttle Labels (Days 2-4), but it is Item 8. Pint ut that the printed insert items may be stred in a file flder r binder fr easy reference. Items may be printed in black and white r clr. Everyday Supplies Items needed thrughut VBS. These supplies likely already available in the rm where Team Missins will meet. Refer t the handut and explain that cnferees were nt able t lcate Daily Supplies in the rm, because daily supplies vary by day. This refers t specific items used n a particular day. The supplies needing t be gathered will be different each day based n the activities. The supplies are listed n page 5 f the leader guide as well as n the first page f each sessin. 4. Study the Schedule (15 minutes) Explain that teams must always pay attentin t when a game is suppsed t begin, s that the team is n time and prepared. Say: It s imprtant t knw the schedule fr each day, as well as hw t adapt the schedule t best suit the amunt f time yu ve been given t teach missins. Display the clred pennants and explain that each item written n the pennant is an imprtant part f each day s missins rtatin. Chse 8 vlunteers t stand at the frnt and hld each pennant. (Fr small grups, place the pennants n a table r flr.) Challenge the remaining cnferees t wrk tgether t arrange the pennants in rder frm the first activity t the last. Give cnferees the amunt f time it takes t play the Game On! theme sng (Music fr Kids CD) t get the items in the crrect rder. Once everyne agrees with the rder, they must check with yu t see if they gt the schedule crrect. Yu may reveal the number f activities that are in their crrect time slts. Allw cnferees t cntinue t make changes until the sng ends. Review the items in the crrect rder and encurage cnferees t fill in the crrect rder n the Study the Schedule sectin f the handut. Use the fllwing talking pints t review the activities fund in each daily lessn.

4 VBS 2018 Children s Missins Rtatin Base Cnference Plan 4 Activity #1 Pint ut this activity is usually fun, active, and engaging t kids. Nte that the Name that Sprt activity cmpleted earlier was an example f an intrductry activity. Hesskew Family Missins Stry/Vide Shw this vide after the first activity is cmplete. The Hesskew Family lives in Pland (reference Insert Item 1 Pland Pster ) and use sprts as a way t talk with peple abut Gd. Explain that each day kids will watch a vide explaining mre abut the family s missin in Pland. Team Talk #1 Help kids review what they have just learned abut missins frm the Hesskew family. This is a time f engaging kids as well as helping them t think abut the impact f missins in their wn lives. Pint ut that the first three pennants are the same clr as a reminder that the first three activities all tie in tgether. Activity #2 An intrductin t learning mre abut the sprts ministry led by Jeff Thmpsn, a frmer ftball player. A theme r imprtant fact that is revealed in the missins stry is usually intrduced during this activity. Team Talk #2 A time t review what was learned abut the 10:12 Sprts Ministry. This is a time t review infrmatin and an pprtunity fr kids t think abut ways they can be missins-minded, t. Cl Off Campaign Missins Prject Time will be spent each day participating in a hands-n missin prject. Mre details will be prvided in the next activity. Prayer Pennants Referenced at the end f each day. Pint ut the prepared prayer pennants n the wall. Explain that each day s prayer pint is based n that day s main pint. Pennants will be added thrughut the week. Explain that the items used thrughut VBS serve as functinal decratins. Explain that there are many ways t adapt the schedule t meet the needs f individual churches. Fr example, if time is limited, there is the ptin t fcus n either the Hesskew family r 10:23 Sprts Ministry during the week. If space is limited, there are large grup ptins that can be used if kids are nt able t mve arund much. Call attentin t the lengths f each vide n page 2 f the leader guide. Suggest cnferees first talk with their VBS Directr abut the amunt f time alltted t missins each day and familiarize themselves with all the schedule ptins and adaptatins. They then can make a decisin abut which elements t include in the daily schedule t maximize the time spent with kids. Be prepared t answer questins and ffer advice abut different schedules ptins. Be sensitive t hw much time is dedicated t this discussin. If needed, table the discussin and revisit it at the end f the cnference. 5. Knw the Missin (10 minutes) Say: When playing sprts, yu need t knw the rules f the game s that yu ll knw hw t play withut getting penalized. Yu want t play well and fair. Intrduce the Cl Off Campaign using the prepared water bttles. Distribute the reprducible frm page 24 t all cnferees. Give five vlunteers ne each f the five prepared water bttles. Ask vlunteers t lcate the number fund n their water bttles. Invite the vlunteer with bttle number 1 t read Questin 1 under Water Bttle Q & A n the reprducible. Prvide cmmentary and explanatin as needed abut the missin prject. Cntinue t call n vlunteers in rder t read the remaining questins.

5 VBS 2018 Children s Missins Rtatin Base Cnference Plan 5 Call attentin t the Cl Off Campaign Gal Chart (Item 3) and discuss hw t display and measure class gals using the chart. Explain that the prepared Tally Sheets (Item 7) and gal chart are als fund n the DVD- ROM and can be printed as many times as needed. (Different grups f kids may want t cmpete against ne anther t see wh can cllect the mst water bttles r cmplete the mst labels.) Review the different materials available fr this prject, including the Missins Prject Letter (Item 4) that will be sent hme with each child attending VBS. Outline the different ways kids can be invlved each day with this prject: Cunting water bttles Dnating water bttles Clring labels Attaching labels t water bttles Filling in the chart(s) Cunting the number f water bttle labels cmpleted Pint ut the Knw the Missin sectin n the handut. Discuss ideas with cnferees abut hw they may use this missins prject in their churches. What will ur church d? (Cllect water, clr labels, bth?) Where will we d this? (Lgistics f string the water bttles and als distributin) Hw will we d this? (Wh will versee the missin prject? Wh will distribute the water?) When will we d this? (When is the best time? During VBS? After VBS?) Why shuld we d this? (What will be yur mtivatin?) Spend a mment in prayer, asking Gd t bless the effrts f all thse wh will chse t be a part f the Cl Off Campaign. 6. Review the Ftage (20 minutes) Say: Caches ften study the ftage f previus games t learn abut their ppnents strategies and ways t challenge their team t be successful. Explain that tday cnferees will review sme f the ftage t becme familiar with the tw sprts-fcused ministries that kids will learn abut in VBS. Play The Hesskew Family, Day 1 Vide (Missins DVD). Invite cnferees t share anything they nticed and learned frm the vide. Nte there was a challenge issued n the vide t play a part n Gd s team by telling thers abut Jesus and His lve. Pint ut the sectin n the page 24 reprducible labeled Play a Part n Gd s Team. Mentin that this is an imprtant part f missins and especially the ministries kids will be learning abut this week. Use the fllwing mtins t help cnferees get cmfrtable with the three steps. Ask them t participate as yu describe the fllwing: Pretend t bunce a basketball while saying, Get t knw peple. It is imprtant t listen t peple. Spend time with peple. Pretend t thrw a ftball while saying, Learn smething interesting abut peple. If yu listen t peple, yu are ging t learn abut peple. The mre yu learn, the mre familiar yu becme t peple. Pretend t swing a bat and ball while saying, Tell peple Gd cares abut them. Shw Gd s lve t peple yu have gtten t knw and learn abut. Review the three steps a few times with cnferees. Nte this is the same activity kids will d after watching the first vide n Day 1 ( Team Talk, p. 7).

6 VBS 2018 Children s Missins Rtatin Base Cnference Plan 6 Play 10:12 Sprts Ministry, Day 1 Vide (Missins DVD). Discuss the vide by asking the fllwing: What did yu learn abut Jrdan? Why is ftball imprtant t Jrdan? What des Jrdan call thse with whm he plays ftball? Review the three steps cnferees just learned with mtins. Ask cnferees t think abut each f the steps and hw they played a part in Jrdan s life based n what he shared in the vide. Nte these three steps will be reviewed several times thrughut the week. Say: On Day 1 f VBS, the stry is abut The Lst Sheep. Kids will walk away knwing that Jesus cares abut them. Play Hesskew Family, Day 2 Vide Call ut different ways a crwd may react during a game. Guide cnferees t give a thumbs up if the wrds r actins are encuraging r a thumbs dwn if the wrds are discuraging. (This activity is included in the leader guide n page 10 under Team Talk. ) Share the fllwing actins: Clap when a gal is made. (thumbs up) Yell, Gd defense! (thumbs up) B at the ther team when ne f its player scres. (thumbs dwn) Tss empty cntainers n the field r curt. (thumbs dwn) Yell, Gd try when a player barely misses a gal. (thumbs up) Say: Telling thers abut Jesus might be discuraging at times, just like it can be challenging fr the Hesskew family. Teaching kids can be challenging, t. Just like yu ll hear in the next vide, it s imprtant nt t lse hpe. Yu have the pprtunity t pen kids eyes t missins and the pprtunities ut there t share Gd with thers. Play 10:12 Sprts Ministry, Day 2 (Missins DVD). Pint ut that in this vide Jeff Thmpsn shares reasns why his cmmunity may have lst hpe. Remind cnferees that while the fcus f missins rtatin is learning abut missinaries, it is als imprtant t remember that sme f the kids may need t hear mre abut Gd s lve fr them, t. Say: The stry fr Day 2 f VBS is The Resurrectin f Lazarus, a great stry f hpe. Kids will walk away knwing that Jesus gives them hpe. 7. Take a Break and Stretch It Out (10 minutes) Direct cnferees t get n their feet and give the fllwing directins: Reach fr the sky: Stretch yur arms up twards the ceiling. Reach side t side: Mve yur arms back and frth and side t side. Reach dwn: Stretch yur arms as far dwn t yur feet as pssible, attempting t tuch yur tes. Reach backwards: Clasp yur hands behind yur back and gently lift hands up. Explain if cnferees were t d thse exercises daily, they might build up sme strength and flexibility. Nte the mre peple share abut Jesus with thers, the mre cmfrtable peple becme. Pint ut the stretching exercise is fund n page 13 f the leader guide (Day 3). Briefly review the missin stries fr Day 3 using the summaries fund n page 22 f the leader guide. (Shw the vides if time allws.) Explain the cnnectin between the strength and stretching exercises and the kind f strength Cach Albert mentined in the Hesskew Family, Day 3 missins stry. Say: Day 3 s Bible stry is abut Thmas seeing Jesus fr himself. Kids will be challenged t understand that Jesus helps them t believe.

(X s and O s) Assign each cnferee either the letter X r O, then ask them all t stand. Explain yu will give a cmmand and then make the shape f either the letter X r O with yur arms t indicate which grup must cmplete the cmmand. Alternate between letters fr each f the fllwing cmmands: Jg in place Rll yur head in a circular mtin Stretch yur legs Jump up and dwn Cngratulate the teams and then say: It s time t learn mre abut Cach Albert s thughts n what makes a gd team. Play Hesskew Family, Day 4 (Missins DVD). Emphasize the mst imprtant playbk available is the Bible. Missins is all abut telling thers abut Jesus in rder that they might have the pprtunity t accept Gd s free gift f salvatin. The Hesskew family has dedicated their lives t sharing the gd news f Jesus with the peple f Pland. Ask cnferees t recall the three steps (frm earlier) t being part f Gd s team: Get t knw peple. Learn abut peple. Shw lve t thers. Review the 10:12 Sprts Ministry, Day 4 missins stry. (Or shw the vide if time allws.) Frm small grups, pairs, r assign individuals ne f the fllwing sprts: hckey, basketball, ftball, and sccer. Ask thse wh were assigned each sprt t cme up with a mtin t match the sprt. Call n a vlunteer frm each sprt t demnstrate his mtin. Explain that yu will hld up a play frm the Playbk Cards (Item 9). The grup must decide which sprt the play represents and respnd with the crrespnding mtin. Display varius plays frm the Playbk Cards. Mve quickly frm ne play t the next. Mentin that this activity is used during Make the Play (p. 17 f leader guide). Cmment that Cach Sean and Jrdan bth discussed the imprtance f learning verses t play the game, but mre imprtantly t live a life that is pleasing t Gd. Use this pprtunity t review the theme verse, 2 Peter 1:3, with the grup. Flip the Playbk Cards ver and distribute t cnferees. Encurage them t wrk tgether t put the verse tgether. Once the verse is cmplete, ask the cnferees t read the verse alud as a team. (Fr large grups, make tw sets cards and frm tw teams. Allw teams t cmplete the task, then cme up with mtins t use when saying the verse.) Remind cnferees that suggestins are fund thrughut the guide t help leaders adapt the teaching prcedures t different sized grups. Say: Day 4 is abut Jesus lve fr all peple. Learning mre abut Jesus plays an imprtant part in helping kids recgnize their need fr a relatinship with Jesus. Mentin that Day 5 s Bible stry is abut Paul and Silas in prisn. Invite cnferees t share sme f the struggles and challenges mentined during the missins stries this week frm bth the Hesskew family and 10:12 Sprts Ministry. Play the Hesskew Family, Day 5 vide (Missins DVD). Say: The Hesskew family chses t praise Gd and cntinue t share abut Jesus with thers because they knw this is what Gd wants them t d. This is a great pprtunity t challenge kids t think abut what Gd wants them t d t share abut Jesus with thers.

Say: Did yu feel the energy and excitement frm the teams as they prepared and played the champinship game? Hw lng d yu think thse feelings lasted? Pint ut the players did much mre than play a game f sprts in Maryland. They learned verses, built relatinships, and heard mre abut Jesus. 9. Review the Plays (10 minutes) Frm tw teams and prvide each with a megaphne. Pint ut the Prayer Pennants (Item 5) displayed in the rm. Remve the pennants frm display and shuffle them. Hld up ne pennant and invite teams t decide which day the pennant describes. Lead teams, n yur signal, t say the day s number thrugh the megaphne. Review all f the prayer pennants with the grup. Remind cnferees that Team Missins clses each day by fcusing n a prayer pennant and spending time in prayer. 10. Team Talk (10 minutes) Remind cnferees f the three plays and mtins that g alng with playing a part n Gd s team. Direct them t the reprducible and lead the grup t repeat Plays 1 3 using the mtins frm earlier (fund n page 7 f the leader guide). Share yur favrite f the missins stries and why. Pint ut that thers may have a different stry that std ut t them r was meaningful. Emphasize that imprtance f using different activities s that all kids will have the pprtunity t relate t the material being taught and apply the messages in their wn lives. Say: Team Missins is an pprtunity t present the idea f missins in yur church, cmmunity, America, and in ther cuntries. We all play a part n Gd s team. All the preparatin, prayers, and teaching prcedures are wrth it when they help prepare kids t gear up fr life s big game. Distribute VBS 2018 Bkmarks. Encurage cnferees t put the bkmark in their Bibles as a reminder t pray fr VBS befre it begins and fr kids after it ends. Invite vlunteers t stand near ne f the 5 water bttles with labels frm earlier.
