1 Job Description Job Title: Student Voice Co-ordinator Department/School: The SU, University of Bath Grade: 5 Location: University of Bath premises Job Purpose The Student Voice Co-ordinator will champion the student voice by supporting officer elections, SU policy-making, student-led initiatives (including the Top Ten) and national conference delegates. The role will also act as a central point for advice and expertise within The SU on elections, campaigning, external speakers and policy. Source and nature of management provided Representation & Engagement Manager Staff management responsibility None Special conditions The nature of the post will, at times, require the post-holder to take part in occasional weekend or evening activities outside normal office hours. The post is based at the Claverton Down campus but will occasionally work from other University of Bath premises. Some travel to other students unions and conferences will be required at different points in the year. Main duties and responsibilities 1 Plan, promote and support SU officer elections, increasing awareness and participation amongst students, supporting the elections committee and Deputy Returning Officer, and providing guidance and advice on elections best-practice across The SU. 2 Support the officer team in developing and co-ordinating The SU s policy mechanism. Support and advise students in writing policy, liaise with students' union, University and other contacts to ensure viability, legality and appropriateness. 3 In conjunction with students union officers, maintain and develop The SU s campaigns framework, including identification and delivery of priority issues. Support the delivery of The SU s Top Ten priority issues by supporting and advising the officer team on the planning and delivery of campaigning objectives and associated activity. 4 Co-ordinate the national representation activity of The SU, including elections, training and support for delegates to NUS national conferences, and support students to engage with other representational bodies (e.g. parliamentary activity).
2 5 Maintain oversight of the external speaker s referral procedure, including researching and advising on political issues that may arise through engagement of an external speaker. 6 Develop and support The SU s Politics & Activism Executive Committee, including co-ordination of elections, training, meetings, support and development as required. Empower and support students and officers who participate in campaigning, through training, advice, information and support, and grow and develop the student activist base, maintaining oversight of their activities. 7 Seek out best practice from the students union and voluntary sectors on elections, campaigning and policy-making. Identify external funding, training and support available from local and national organisations to support activity. 8 Maintain a high level of current affairs awareness and brief student officers and staff on key issues (including progress of NUS campaigns) relating to members. Provide briefings for students attending key University committees to ensure they are effective and informed members of the committee. 9 Support officers and students to prepare reports, proposals and papers for University committees and other forums where required. Ensure effective timescales are in place for consultation with key stakeholders. 10 Work closely with The SU marketing department to ensure a cohesive mechanism for communicating campaigning activity, national activism and opportunities to engage. Maintain relevant webpages and social media accounts. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager.
