3 Introduction The Malaysian Bar is a creature of statute established under the Advocates and Solicitors' Ordinance 1947 which ordinance was subsequently repealed by the Legal Profession Act It is an independent Bar whose aim is to uphold the rule of law and the cause of justice and protect the interest of the legal profession as well as that of the public. The legal profession in Malaysia is a fused one and the Malaysian Bar has 13,196 members practising in 5601 law firms. Each advocate and solicitor is automatically a member of the Malaysian Bar so long as he/she holds a valid Practising Certificate. The Bar Council comprises thirty six (36) members who are elected annually to manage the affairs of the Malaysian Bar. The Council consists of the President, the Vice-President, the immediate past President, the Chairman of each of the Eleven (11) State Bar Committees, one (1) member elected by each of the eleven (11) State Bars to be its representative to the Bar Council and twelve (12) members elected from throughout Peninsular Malaysia by way of postal ballot. The Office Bearers, namely President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer are elected annually by the Bar Council at its first meeting which is traditionally held immediately after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Malaysian Bar. They are full time practitioners and their honorary appointments are subject to re-election every year. The Malaysian Bar is of the view that its members are able to provide services of a world-class quality, where its best and brightest can match the equivalent in other jurisdictions. We work with the Judiciary and the Government in improving access to justice, law reform, and the overall improvement in the administration of justice. The Bar Council has various specialist sub-committees ranging from Arbitration to Syariah Law, with the view to educating our members and increasing standards. 3

4 OBJECTIVE OF THE 15th MALAYSIAN LAW CONFERENCE Malaysian Bar organises the Malaysian Law Conference every two years and the 15 th Malaysian Law Conference will be held from st July 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The theme for this year Conference is Malaysia: Extending Frontiers, Widening Horizons. It intends to showcase the best and the brightest in the Bar, Judiciary, Attorney General s Chambers, and bring together all stakeholders of the legal fraternity. There have been substantial changes, if not improvements to the administration of justice and law reform. This Conference will highlight these changes. It is anticipated that local and foreign delegates comprising lawyers, members of the judicial and legal services, judges, academics, in-house corporate counsel (local & regional), other professionals and various industries from Malaysia and overseas will attend. Among the legal issues that will be discussed include: Current Issues in Enforcement of Securities Law in Malaysia; Latest Development in Company Law; Current Issues in Shareholders Rights and Directors Duties; Latest Developments in Land Law; Present and Future Challenges of Islamic Finance; Latest Developments in International and Domestic Arbitrations; Defending Intellectual Property Rights; Latest Developments in Construction Law; Recent Developments in Commercial Law/ Equity; State of our Legal Education; Rule of Law; Human Rights; and Constitutional Law. This year we are honoured to have the following luminaries both local and foreign to speak at our Conference: Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Sri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak; Chief Justice of Malaysia, Y.A.A Tun Dato Seri Zaki bin Tun Azmi; Attorney General of Malaysia Y.B. Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail; Chief Justice of South Africa Constitutional Court, Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo; the former High Court Judge of Australia, the Honourable Michael Kirby; and Court of Appeal Justice of Singapore, Justice V K Rajah. Conference Sessions Sponsorship at RM 20, per session The Malaysian Law Conference provides a golden opportunity for law firms and companies to host a topic session (to be approved by the Organising Committee). The 15 th Malaysian Law Conference has approximately 39 individual sessions as set out in our proposed programme in Annexure B. CEO Breakfast Forum Sponsorship at RM 200 per person with a minimum of 50 persons Breakfast Forum is designed to allow Corporate leaders to meet and share ideas on the current issues concerning their respective industries. The Breakfast Forum offers a unique opportunity to be the exclusive presenter to Corporate delegates. The entitlement of the sponsor is as follows: Nomination of 1 or 2 speakers for an exclusive total duration of 45 minutes for the forum. Distribution of Corporate Material (subject to approval) to all delegates during the forum. 2 persons entitled to attend the Malaysian Law Conference as delegates. 2 seats at the Gala Dinner. Exhibition Booth at RM 15, per booth There will be exhibiting opportunities available throughout the duration of the conference for companies or organisations that wish to present their products or services. The exhibition arena is situated at the Foyer of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. This will be an excellent opportunity for exhibitors to promote and market their business and services, to display their products and, more importantly, to engage and interact directly with delegates. The rate for the exhibition booth is RM 15, and the car exhibition for a car is RM 50, on specifications and terms set out in Annexure A. 11
