Radiology technologists, ultrasound technicians, and other support roles within the industry require certification to enter the field, and many states require continued education credits to continue in these positions. Aspiring radiologists must complete four years of undergrad premed, and then four years of medical school. Specializations require additional schooling. Certification in sub-specialties typically entails an additional one to two years of education, and certain states have continued education requirements for radiologists. Radiologists and radiology professionals use several types of imaging technology to diagnose patients, including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds and nuclear imaging. In many cases, radiologists don t have direct contact with patients. Instead, radiologic technologists perform procedures to obtain images, and the radiologist later examines these images and confers with a primary care physician to make a diagnosis. Many radiologists specialize in a certain area of the field, such as pediatric, nuclear or interventional radiology. Radiologists earn an average income of $349,000. Sixteen percent of radiologists report annual incomes of $500,000 or more, while 62 percent make between $250,000 and $500,000 per year. Those working in group practices earn the most, an average of $390,000 per year, while radiologists employed by hospitals average $354,000 per year. Median pay for radiologic and MRI technologists was $58,120 per year in There are currently 230,600 radiologic and MRI technologist jobs in the U.S. The demand for radiologic and MRI technologists is predicted to grow by nine percent, or 20,700 jobs, by Radiologic and MRI technologists work in healthcare facilities, and more than half work in hospitals. About 30,000 radiologists worked in the U.S. as of About 20 percent of radiologists are women and about 80 percent are men. It s been predicted that a 16-percent shortage of radiologists could develop by 2020 if current training rates and health care demand trends stay the same, so radiologists who complete their training should experience good job prospects.
