2 SCHOOL NAME: ECOLE NATIONAL MIXTE DE DESSOURSES de LEOGANE The original building sustained major damage during the earthquake on January 12, It is currently unsafe to occupy. The original building should be removed as soon as possible. The roof has already been removed. The school had an enrollment of approximately 240 students in grades 1-6. Current enrolment is 97 Boys, 93 Girls. 190 Total, with larger numbers currently in the upper year. The school is now partnered with two private schools who share the building in the afternoons: College Pr La Formation De Jesus De Demain Loui Jeune Jean Krist Total 80 Students Ecole De Sion Saint Franc Emmanuel students before earthquake. 120 current students CONTACT INFORMATION Marie Ladiciceur (?), PRELIMINARY SCHEMATIC DESIGN 2

3 SITE INFORMATION Site Size: Approximately 90 feet [28 meters] by 425 feet [130 meters]. It is approximately rectangular. This site is long and narrow. The site is flat. Water: Well. Sanitary System: There doesn t seem to be any sanitary system. Toilets appear to be pit toilets located at the far end of the site. Electricity: Yes CURRENT SCHOOL STATUS [As of May 17, 2010] The original building remains on the site. This building is unsafe and should be removed. The slab can be preserved and used as a hard surface play area. Currently there is a new temporary building constructed by USAID/PHARE on the site (light steel construction). This building is located exactly to the north of the existing building. This building has 6 50m 2 classrooms. It is constructed using a metal frame and roof with plywood walls. It is recommended that the temporary USAID/PHARE structure be reconfigured to function as one part of the permanent school. Additional classrooms should be added at the back of the site (see schematic above). Bay sizes could be modified to provide larger classrooms. If this occurs it is recommended to have the blackboard on the longer north walls of the classrooms. PROPOSED PROJECT To maximize the use of the site 4 additional classrooms should be added at the back of the site on the north side. These new classrooms offer an opportunity to prototype a temporary-to-permanent solutions using similar materials to those used in the USAID/PHARE structure. The preliminary schematic design was presented to Director Marie Cherere Ladiuecium (check spelling) and was approved: Additional Overhang/Covered Walkway Modification to bay sizes subject to structural approval 3

5 PROJECT COSTS The following are approximately costs for this project. The cost of school construction can vary significantly based on the cost of materials, construction techniques, the cost of labor and other factors. It should be pointed out that the Schools for Children estimates are based buildings which are typically fairly simple structures with concrete floors, stucco walls, metal roofs, simple lighting, no ceilings, no mechanical systems, and limited finishes. It should also be pointed out that construction costs are changing in Haiti as the demand for construction materials has increased following the January 12, 2010 earthquake. The costs below describe Net and Gross sq ft/sq meters. For example if a 72 m 2 classroom is constructed, the Net area would be 72 m 2. However, in many designs there would also be a covered walkway in front of the classroom and there would need to for toilets. Therefore, in this example, the 72 m 2 classroom would have a Gross area of m 2. Costs are also broken down into Construction Costs and Total Project Costs. Construction costs include materials and labor. Total Project Costs include construction cost plus architectural/ engineering fees, construction management/supervision and furniture. For planning purposes, we are using the following cost per square ft/meter.
