Switch of the vehicle fleet to electric mobility High energy affinity of the population Over 2/3 of the electricity on Borkum is from renewable energies making it much less CO 2 -intensive than the German average (German average 2016: ~530 g/kwh) Low traffic volume, short distances Less cars per inhabitants (315 per 1000 inhabitants, compared to 588 for Federal State of Lower Saxony) Driving ban zones in the center High level of electrification and sharing offers The island Borkum is ideally suited for the use of electromobility, already being tested 7

10 About NETfficient Today s energy problem: NETfficient s solution: Renewable energies are extensively available, but neither easy to predict nor to store. Question: How can we provide clean, renewable energy available today for tomorrow s energy demand? Develop local, decentralized energy storage (in combination with PV) smart grid solutions Empowering porsumers NETfficient s solution are being implemented in 5 typical applications in a real environment: Borkum island s electric grid. 13 NETfficient Installations A utility scale HESS of 1 MW/ 500 MWH in the medium voltage grid 40 home-systems with PV (4 kwp), smart meters and wide range of storage systems (mostly 5kWh), 2x hydrogen systems (power-to-gas) 5 non-residential buildings: PV (20kWp) and Batteries or HESS (75 kwh) 50 LED street lights powered by a 4 kwp photovoltaic system and a 15 kwh Lithium-Ion battery. Two large, low-temperature thermal storage tanks powered by PV maintaining the temperature for the fish tanks at the Nordsee Aquarium Borkum (Power-to-heat).
