2 WATER TREATMENT One of the main appications of Sicarbon activated carbon is the treatment of iquids, especiay water. Basicay a distinction is made between: Drinking water purification, Groundwater treatment and Waste water treatment. The poutants found by treating water with activated carbon mosty manifest themseves as sovents, hydrocarbons and haogenated hydrocarbons. The activated carbon removes these organic substances from the water. Treatment of swimming poo water by means of activated carbon does not fit in this scheme. In fact it is more a matter of dechorination or deozonization then of removing adsorptive poutants. The activated carbon catayticay breaks down the chorine and ozone respectivey. Activated carbon made of coconut shes, ike Sicarbon K 835 or Sicarbon K 814, is very hard and therefore extremey resistant to the aggressive chorine or ozone and so exceptionay suitabe for dechorination and deozonization. For water treatment Powdered carbon, Granuar carbon, Fine peetized carbon are used. Usuay powdered carbons are appied for processes that require the carbon to be dosed in the pouted water. The activated carbon oaded with the poutants has to be separated by suitabe fiter equipment. Our powdered carbons Sicarbon TH 90 and Sicarbon CW 20 are appied for water purification. The granuar or fine peetized carbons are appied in fixed bed adsorption equipment. The pouted water shoud pass the stationary ayer of activated carbon in one direction (mosty downward). So the activated carbon wi adsorb the poutants. The ife time of the activated carbon is determined by its oading capacity, which again is fixed by the pore structure and the specific surface area. 3 AIR PURIFICATION Peetized carbons and coarse-grained granuar carbons are mainy used for gas and air purification. Many industria processes discharge smoke and vapours with more or ess toxic matter as e.g. (chorinated) hydrocarbons. The majority of these toxics are prohibited to bow off in the open. The outstanding properties of activated carbon reaize the adsorption of the poutants by its hydrophobic nature. Basicay exhaust air treatment shoud be distinguished from sovent recovery when deaing with air purification. Usuay the distinction is evident from the concentration and quantity of the poutants. Large quantities make it economicay possibe to desorb and recover sovents from the activated carbon (e.g. with steam). However, ow concentrations or mixtures of poutants which cannot be recyced require the appication of peetized carbon for singe use ony. Depending on the type of poutant it might be possibe to cean the used activated carbon in our reactivation pant. Our peetized Sicarbon SIL 40 as we as granuar Sicarbon C 46 are perfecty fitted for exhaust air purification. Peetized Sicarbon SC 40 is successfuy appied to recover sovents with a high boiing point, or is aso used as high quaity one-way activated carbon to adsorb substances as e.g. sioxanes from biogas or other organic voatie contaminants from waste air streams. Peetized Sicarbon SC44 is one of the highest quaity activated carbons to recover sovents with a medium or ow boiing point.

4 SILCARBON SPECIALS Impregnated activated carbon. Many high-tech processes produce exhaust air containing poutants that can ony incompetey be adsorbed by common activated carbon. Often it concerns ow moecuar and poar substances that, even in ow concentrations, have a toxic effect or may otherwise be a probem. In such cases activated carbon is used, that has especiay been prepared, i.e. impregnated in order to react to the reevant poutants. On the basis of a more or ess compicated chemica reaction between the poutants and the impregnation the poutants are removed from the exhaust air (chemisorption). Acid washed activated carbon with ow ash content The non-carbonaceous part of activated carbon is described as ash content. Basicay our granuar activated carbons made from coconut shes have very ow ash content and are therefore very pure. Typica ash contents of Sicarbon K 835 and Sicarbon K 814 are about 2 % by weight. In many cases, e.g. for condensate oi remova, a very pure and neutray reacting activated carbon is required: granuar Sicarbon K48 specia, a ow ash content, acid washed speciaty, has a ph-vaue between 5 and 7, with very ow water soube siica content suitabe for deoiing steam condensate. Sicarbon activated carbons are impregnated to suit your requirements: For exampe iodine impregnated activated carbon Sicarbon J42 is successfuy used for the adsorption of hydrogen sufide from biogas. Another speciaty, siver impregnated carbon Sicarbon AG03, is used in sma drinking water units to prohibit bacteria growth on the carbon.
