Topics include increasing awareness of the differences in economic cultures, how those differences affect opportunities for success, developing an action plan to improve services to clients and improving retention rates for new hires from poverty. This seminar is based on the book Bridges Out Of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities, a collaboration between Ruby K. Payne, Philip DeVol, and Terie Dreussi Smith. Phil's experience includes developing school based, substance abuse prevention, intervention and student assistance programs, and Terie is an experienced educator and prevention coordinator. 4 Applying Bridges Concepts: Applying Bridges Concepts provides skills, policies, and procedures that enable organizations and communities to become more skilled in working with individuals who are in poverty. The information gives organizations tools to design and implement organizational change. The following topics will be covered: 1. Application and Review: Apply Bridges Out of Poverty concepts -Mental Model of Poverty, Research Continuum, Key Points, Hidden Rules, Resources, Language and Future Story (DVD case study analysis) 2. Client Life Cycle: 1) Create a mental model of the organization s Client Life Cycle from the perspective of the customer. 2) Examine the Client Life Cycle to identify the organization s theory of change and organizational expectations regarding individuals in poverty. 3) Identify key areas where the process could be improved. 3. Building Relationships of Respect: 1) Review and practice skills that build and embed relationships of mutual respect. 2) Understand that change hinges on and stems from relationships; identify and practice the skills of making and maintaining relationships. 3) Examine mentoring models and practices. 4. Feuerstein s Mediation Process: 1) Understand the influence mediation has on learning new skills and social development. 2) Practice mediation skills that move customers and organizations away from the moment and toward choice and future story. 3) Review replacement behaviors that offer customers concrete strategies to maintain focus and energy for change. 4. Stages of Change and Motivation: 1) Examine barriers to change created by poverty, organizations and society. 2) Understand the stages of change individual experience in order to support customers in building resources. 3) Practice motivational interviewing and how to assist others using the six steps for negotiating change. 4) Understand that when individuals move toward change, it is the individual who makes the argument for change. 5. Using Mental Models to improve communication and relationships: 1) Identify or develop mental models to be used in one-to-one settings. These mental models would help individual s develop a future story, practice choice, and enjoy the power of being a problem-solver. 2) Identify or develop mental models that can be used at the agency and community level. 5 Bridges Day One Workshop Objectives 1. Develop an accurate mental model of generational poverty and explore the impact of poverty on those served by the organization. Everyone holds mental models (paradigms or mind-sets ) about poverty. This module explores the concrete experience of generational poverty in order to create a shared and accurate mental model of poverty. 2. Review research on the causes of poverty. The research is categorized into four areas: 1) Behavior of the Individual 2) Human and Social Capital 3) Exploitation and 4) Political and Economic Structures. 3. Explore the hidden rules of economic class. The hidden rules are unspoken cues and habits of a group, arising from the concrete experience of living within different economic structures and resource levels. A review of 10 key points is included. 4. Examine the impact of poverty on family structures. This includes reviewing the understandable reasons that family structures may be different in generational poverty, including gender roles and other behavioral patterns. 5. Explore registers of language, discourse patterns, and cognitive issues. This module looks at the language experience of the schools, organizations and the workplace as well as the research on language experiences for children and adults living in generational poverty and other economic classes. 6. Define poverty in terms of the resources needed for a stable life. Participants will review resource definitions and use case studies to assess resources and the impact on individuals and families in poverty. 7. Identify ways in which the information can be used to improve relationships and outcomes: individual, organizational, and community. This includes a summary of basic practices for building relationships of mutual respect, effective programs and community collaboration models.
