2 Information about NST, Nuffield Southampton Theatres Set up as an independent trust in 1982, NST is a producing theatre company based in Southampton. It is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and is also funded by Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council and the University of Southampton. NST produces and presents work in a range of spaces, commissions, develops professional talent, tours, collaborates nationally and internationally and offers a comprehensive range of educational and participatory activities. In May 2013 Sam Hodges was appointed Director and Chief Executive. His first two seasons have included The Nutcracker (directed by Blanche McIntyre); Caryl Churchill's A Number (directed by Mike Longhurst and designed by Tom Scutt) which transferred to the Young Vic Theatre in London in the summer of 2015; the installation of 450 seat pop-up theatre, NST Playing Field, to celebrate NST s 50th birthday and host a summer festival of new work; and the world premiere of an adaptation of the Coen Brothers film The Hudsucker Proxy. Current productions include a new adaptation of Roald Dahl s Fantastic Mr Fox which will transfer to the Lyric Hammersmith before going on a national tour, and a radical new version of Pygmalion. NST is an active collaborator and commissioner with other arts organisations, locally, nationally and internationally - a practice which has established a dynamic artistic network and body of work for the company and its audiences. NST co-produced with Northern Stage, Peepolykus, Nottingham Playhouse, Bristol Old Vic and Curve Leicester in 2016 and will co-produce with West Yorkshire Playhouse, Headlong and Royal & Derngage, Northampton in High quality touring work (recent companies include Kneehigh, Filter, Gecko, and Royal Court) make up a programme which also includes a regular comedy strand, a growing emphasis on work for children, and a commitment to festivals to celebrate particular themes and art-forms. In January 2015 NST was named Regional Theatre of the Year 2015 in the Stage Awards. And in 2017 NST takes on the running of NST City the north building within Southampton s new city centre arts venue known as Studio 144 whilst continuing to run NST Campus, its existing 490 seater theatre based at the University of Southampton. NST City houses a 447 seat main house theatre, a 138 seat studio, screening facilities, rehearsal and education spaces and a café bar and bistro. NST will also take a strategic lead role in co-ordinating creative partnerships within the complex and the city and working closely with the John Hansard Gallery and City Eye who will be resident in the adjacent south building. Nuffield aims to be a major cultural force for Southampton offering the highest quality opportunities for the widest possible range of audiences and participants; providing an essential home to support artistic practice for the region; and playing a key role in championing the value of culture locally. Both of Nuffield s sites will be core to delivering this integrated programme: its campus base at Nuffield Theatre, where it will work in an increasingly strategic partnership with the University of Southampton; and its new city centre base, which will be an anchor and hub for the city s burgeoning Cultural Quarter.

3 NST, NUFFIELD SOUTHAMPTON THEATRES JOB DESCRIPTION: HEAD OF OPERATIONS Responsible to: Executive Director Responsible for: N/A Position Summary The Head of Operations is responsible for the operation of NST s two buildings including front of house, security, bar and catering operations, hires, building facilities and maintenance and for ensuring that NST remains a safe, efficient and welcoming environment for all staff, visitors, companies and customers. Key Responsibilities: Commercial and Front of House Operations To report to the Executive Director on operational matters relating to all shows and events, including accurate costing, budgeting and forecasting, and feeding in to the operational development of the commercial strategy. To line manage the Theatre & Events Manager, enabling them to lead the day-to-day running of operations with an appropriate staff team of FOH Managers, Reception/Security Staff, Bar Supervisors and volunteers. To oversee and/or manage the catering offer on both sites, ensuring that it is in line with NST s brand and overall offer, complements the programme of work and that high standards are maintained at all times. This may involve working closely with a franchise holder or line managing a kitchen team; in the latter case the Head of Operations will also have responsibility for ensuring that financial targets are met. To lead on the development and delivery of an appropriate level of space hires across both buildings, ensuring that the organisation meets its budgeted financial targets. To maximise income generated through bars, catering, ices and functions and to provide regular reports to the Executive Director and the Finance Director. To plan and ensure delivery of key events which may involve hospitality, arranging staffing to resource operational requirements of these events. To ensure the delivery of a professional and welcoming front of house across both spaces. To represent the operational needs of all activities at regular Senior Management and Operations meetings. To ensure that front of house expenditure is controlled effectively and within budget. To oversee and maintain good cash and card control practices and manage bar cash floats (where appropriate). Building Facilities To ensure high standards of building repair and planned maintenance of those areas of both buildings under NST s control and that its (non-theatrical) equipment is maintained to agreed budgets.

4 In collaboration with the Director of Production, to maintain strong relationships with Southampton City Council and to be a key liaison point on buildings, licensing, health and safety, food hygiene. To act as Designated Premises Supervisor for both buildings; ensuring compliance with all terms, required changes and renewals to licenses and sufficient levels of staff training. To be responsible for ensuring cleaning and housekeeping of both NST s buildings is achieved to a high standard by staff or external contractors, managing contractor relationships to ensure quality, efficiency and achieving set budgets. To arrange for Waste Disposal suppliers to dispose effectively of all waste and help to improve increased levels of recycling, reducing landfill waste, within set budgets. To source the best suppliers for utilities (water, gas and electricity), ensuring costeffective supply of products within set budgets, and to be responsible for emergency shut-off procedures. To ensure control of the building s BMS infrastructure in order to deliver efficient and cost-effective heating and cooling of controlled areas, and to plan for the varying requirements of the areas involved. To draw up and then ensure strict compliance and upkeep of Life Safety Systems including Fire Alarm and Refuge Call Systems, and their procedures of training and safe, controlled use. To work with the Executive Director and Director of Production to ensure crossdepartmental compliance to health and safety requirements, including the completion of required risk assessments for activities and arranging for reports to be presented the Board if necessary. To work with the Executive Director to ensure that NST meets all requirements of accessibility, complying with the Disability Discrimination Act and associated regulations. To ensure the training and appropriate in-house cover of First Aid and Fire Marshal trained personnel. To take responsibility for intruder alarm systems covering all buildings, upkeep of emergency contact lists, liaison with suppliers to ensure cost-effective maintenance and reliability of system. To manage out of hours security contractors and emergency keyholders and out of hours callouts, ensuring an out of hours contact is reachable at any given time. To work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Director of Production to build and develop a risk-assessed contingency in the event of a major incident occurring. To work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Director of Production to ensure all areas of insurance requirements are met and maintained as required; Studio 144 To work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Production on the capital project, with a particular regard for the delivery of the Front of House and operational requirements of the project. To work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Production on the planning and delivery of the organisation s move into the new arts complex.

6 About role statements As NST evolves to meet the changing needs of a producing company the roles required of all staff will evolve. As such staff should note that this document is not intended to represent the role that the incumbent will perform in perpetuity. This role statement is intended to provide an overall view of the role as at the date of this statement. Remuneration and Hours Salary Range: 28,560-32,640 Hours: 35 hours Holiday: 25 days a year (plus Bank Holidays) Pension: 1% contribution, if matched by the employee Other benefits: University Car Parking loan, theatre tickets, training and development opportunities Location: This position is currently based at NST Campus, University Road, Southampton SO17 1TR but with the taking on of the management of NST City in Studio144, in the Guildhall Square, this will alter with role holders as minimum needing to attend meetings at both locations.
