1 Job Title: Responsible to: Responsible for: Rate of pay: Hours: Technical Manager Administration Director Assistant Technicians and casual show crew To be negotiated 42.5hrs Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd (Worcester Live) Venues Worcester Live currently manages two performance buildings in Worcester with a third due to open in July Swan Theatre The Swan Theatre is a 350 seat theatre with a proscenium arch stage which presents professional and amateur drama, music, dance and comedy. The Swan Theatre also has a studio theatre, the Vesta Tilley Studio which is housed in separate block adjacent to the main theatre which seats 55 and is used mainly by the resident amateur company and Worcester Live s professional repertory company, Worcester Rep. The Studio block also contains a rehearsal studio and a workshop space. 2. Huntingdon Hall Huntingdon Hall is grade two listed converted Methodist chapel which is now used as a 350 seat venue staging mainly music and spoken word. 3. The Henry Sandon Hall (opening July 2018) The Henry Sandon Hall will be built at the Royal Porcelain works site in Sidbury, Worcester. It will be a multi-purpose space which can be converted into a 140 seat venue. It is planned that it will stage mainly film, spoken word and some acoustic music as well as exhibitions and other events. Worcester Repertory Company The professional repertory company currently produces: 1. An open air production with a two week run in July at the Commandery in Worcester. 2. A site specific production of one week run in Worcester Cathedral in October. 3. A pantomime with a 5 week run (and 2 week rehearsal period) at the Swan Theatre in December/January. 4. Three Studio productions a year (usually in Spring, Autumn and December) of a week run each and usually new writing. 5. Additional main stage and Studio work as and when. Page 1 of 5
2 Other current projects Worcester Live manages the Worcester Festival. PURPOSE OF THE POST The Technical Manager is a senior management position and is responsible to the Administration Director and as the Head of the Technical department manages the technical team, which may comprise of permanent and casual staff as required, acting as their line manager. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of and experience in technical theatre operations as well as good inter-personal and communication skills. The post holder provides technical expertise and support to all artistes, companies, users and hirers of the Swan Theatre and Vesta Tilley Studio. The post holder provides technical expertise and support to the Worcester Repertory Company and when required to all other Worcester Live venues and projects. The post requires frequent evening and week-end working. The Technical Manager is expected to contribute towards the development of Worcester Live activities and to be involved in Worcester Live projects wherever they take place. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintenance 1. Managing all technical and housekeeping matters for all the performance, rehearsal, back stage and workshop areas of the Swan Theatre and Studio block. 2. Maintaining and repairing all technical equipment at the Swan Theatre. 3. Maintaining and repairing all lighting equipment at Huntingdon Hall. 4. Maintaining and repairing all lighting and AV equipment at the Henry Sandon Hall. 5. Reporting to the Administration Director any areas of maintenance or concerns over any equipment within their designated areas of responsibility which may exceed their agreed spending limit. 6. Carrying out some general maintenance on all Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd venues. 7. Liaising with Worcester City Council or other maintenance support companies on building maintenance tasks for the Swan Theatre and Studio block. 8. Ensuring that within their area of responsibility replacement equipment and stock is ordered where necessary to maintain an adequate stock. 9. Ensuring that the main house stage, studio block and workshop are kept in an appropriate clean and presentable state. 10. Ensuring the Vesta Tilley Studio is returned to it s resting state after all productions. 11. To carry out fire alarm testing at the Swan Theatre and Studio block and ensure the fire log is kept up to date. Page 2 of 5
3 Production 12. Liaising with, and the co-ordination of, all the technical requirements of visiting companies and hirers to ensure the good and effective running of the Swan Theatre and Vesta Tilly Studio. 13. Ensuring pre-rigs are carried out to maintain the good and proper running of the Swan Theatre and Vesta Tilley Studio. 14. Ensuring the provision of technical support and crew to Worcester Repertory Company. 15. Ensuring that technical support and guidance, including stage management, LX and sound, is provided as required to all visiting professional companies and hirers of the Swan Theatre and Vesta Tilley Studio. 16. Ensuring that technical support and guidance is provided as required to all visiting hirers of the Swan Theatre and Vesta Tilley Studio. 17. Ensuring a consistently high standard of technical support to visiting companies and hirers 18. Promoting good working practice and maintaining high production values at all times. 19. Liaising with the Operations Manager (Front of House Manager) on operational matters. 20. Attending production meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, get-ins and get outs, and performances as required. 21. Working as show crew, including pantomime, in accordance with staff rotas. 22. Ensuring that show reports are completed and filed for every live performance. 23. May be required to make, build or acquire small props and scenery as and when required. Finance 24. Planning and managing all aspects of their area of responsibility within the allocated technical budget including (but not limited to) managing technical staff overtime, expenditure on casual staff, the purchasing of new equipment and the ordering of replacement stock. Staffing 25. Recruiting and managing, in consultation with the Administration Director where necessary, all permanent and casual staff within the technical department. 26. Scheduling and supervising the staff within the technical department, making best use of their time and keeping an accurate record of hours worked. 27. Ensuring all events in Swan Theatre, Vesta Tilley Studio and all Worcester Rep events requiring technical staff are staffed as required. 28. Assessing the training requirements of the technical staff (including casual staff), notifying the Administration Director of these requirements where necessary and providing in house training wherever possible. 29. Ensuring good working relationships and co-operation with all departments within Worcester Live and seeking actively to assist other departments where possible. 30. Providing staff for all other Worcester Live venues and projects if and when required. Policies and Development Page 3 of 5
4 General 31. Being familiar and complying with current Health and Safety regulations relevant to the industry and to keep abreast of changes to such regulations. 32. To administer the Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd Health and Safety policy as it relates to their designated areas of responsibility and ensure all working practices adhere to it. 33. To write risk assessments when required. 34. Develop, in conjunction with the Chief Executive, medium and long-term plans to upgrade and improve Worcester Live s technical equipment. 35. Devising and overseeing departmental policies and practices and encouraging the involvement of all staff as appropriate. 36. Keeping informed of current theatre technological developments, working practices and legislative requirements. 37. To comply with all Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd s policies including but not limited to Health and Safety Policy, Access Policy and Equal Opportunities policy and to fully comply with the Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd Staff Handbook. 38. To carry out administrative work generated by the activity listed the job description. 39. To undertake other duties as may be reasonably required. 40. Three years experience working within a technical department of a regional theatre 2. Experience of working and managing a theatre stage. 3. Excellent knowledge of lighting systems. 4. Good knowledge of sound systems. 5. Good knowledge and experience of rigging techniques. 6. Good knowledge of theatre technical equipment. 7. Good knowledge of AV equipment. 8. Experience of managing and instructing staff. 9. Experience of producing staff rotas. 10. Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations. 11. Good communication skills. 12. Ability to remain calm whilst working under pressure. 13. A desire to continuously improve working practices. 14. Availability to work scheduled evenings and weekends, including the anti-social hours frequently required in the position. 15. Experience of writing working policies and risk assessments. 16.
