ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Production Department at Opera Queensland is responsible for the manufacture, installation and co-ordination of all scenery, props, costumes, wigs, make-up, lighting, audio, projection, stage effects and crewing for all productions within Opera Queensland s repertoire, as well as their maintenance, transport and storage. It is also responsible for the management and maintenance of all rehearsal and related spaces under the remit of Opera Queensland. The Production Department also oversees the project management of technical functions including: detailed costing, budget management, scheduling for the manufacture and presentation of productions and key liaison for IT support services. 3 ABOUT THE POSITION Position Title Head of Technical Production Position Summary The Head of Technical Production works with creative teams to achieve their artistic vision and production values to the highest standard of excellence from inception, to stage, tour and post-production, providing accurate and timely information to the Senior Leadership Team. With a focus on strategic leadership, professional courtesy, collaboration, timeliness, innovation, and respect for the creative process, the Head of Technical Production ensures Opera Queensland s productions are delivered safely and effectively while guaranteeing the most effective utilisation of people and resources within agreed budgets and schedules. Hours of work & location The position is full time. The usual hours of work are 9am- 5pm Monday to Friday at our Southbank Offices. However, the job requires a willingness to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and touring. 4 Key Accountabilities 1. Manage the financial, personnel and material resources of productions and events of Opera Queensland 2. Support the integration of organisational values and develop the capacity of the organisation 3. Manage and maintain Opera Queensland s technical equipment and other physical resources including IT equipment and technical support, and all rehearsal and related spaces under the remit of Opera Queensland 4. Act as the Workplace Health and Safety Officer for Opera Queensland Responsibilities 1. To manage the financial, personnel and material resources of productions and events of Opera Queensland Develop, manage and report against production budgets, and monitor and control expenditure in accordance with approved working budgets Coordinate, manage and implement all technical and operational requirements for productions and events produced by Opera Queensland Ensure productions and events of Opera Queensland have the necessary technical support within the parameters of the Opera Queensland s schedules and budgets Work with creative teams to oversee the production process, ensuring proper planning, and costing is carried out during the design development period Preparation of external tender documents Supervise all external contractors activities to ensure compliance with designs, budgets, schedules and professional standards Chair production meetings, distribute minutes and monitor action items Provide hands-on event management and production support, attending all tech and dress rehearsals to oversee and action all notes arising Recruit and contract all technical production staff Develop and maintain policies and procedures relevant to all technical areas Oversee the implementation of effective work practices, procedures and rosters for all permanent and casual technical staff Research and implement contemporary production management processes and technologies where necessary 2. Manage and maintain Opera Queensland s technical equipment and other physical resources including IT equipment and technical support, and all rehearsal and related spaces under the remit of Opera Queensland Oversee the management of all rehearsal, workshop and wardrobe related spaces, under the permanent or temporary control of Opera Queensland including liaising with service providers and the maintaining all necessary records Maintain oversight and management responsibility for all technical equipment and physical resources under the permanent or temporary control of Opera Queensland Oversee the management of Opera Queensland s IT equipment and be the key liaison for technical support Act as the principal point of liaison with venue technical managements Advise on realistic capital expenditure for ongoing renewal and maintenance of Opera Queensland s technical equipment Oversee maintenance of Opera Queensland s Asset Register 4. Act as the Workplace Health and Safety Officer for Opera Queensland. Provide leadership to Opera Queensland in maintaining a high level of Workplace Health and Safety in the organisations work practices and facilities Maintain a good working knowledge of necessary awards and legislation, in particular WHS legislation Ensure the safety of all Opera Queensland employees, including volunteers and contractors, through appropriate Workplace Health and Safety management and ensure that all staff are adequately trained in WHS Ensure Opera Queensland has, and implements, processes for complying with any legal duty or obligation and ensure these processes are verified, monitored and reviewed Ensure all contractors adhere to contractor management procedures Ensure that Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) - Office of Industrial Relations is advised of any serious incident or dangerous occurrence immediately. Other occasional duties which are within the goals and scope of this position description but not specifically listed as required from time to time Selection Criteria Qualifications/licences required: Safe Work at Heights, First Aid Certificate, manual drivers licence. 6 SELECTION CRITERIA Knowledge Skills & Experience Technical Excellent record in technical management with a producing venue or organisation Extensive knowledge of stagecraft, theatre production and scenic construction, rigging, automation, lighting, video, sound and projection Excellent understanding of the work and operations in production workshops, costume departments, stage management, transport, logistics and storage Experience of touring productions either domestically or internationally Management Ability to develop, implement and manage production and technical processes and budgets within budget and resource constraints A good eye for detail and quality control to ensure that all elements of a production are produced to the highest standards Ability to work independently, manage multiple, competing priorities successfully, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgement and initiative Excellent oral and written communication skills Excellent negotiation skills with a creative approach to problem solving A natural collaborator who enjoys working as part of a team Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Workplace Health and Safety legislation, Live Performance Award and Certified Performers Agreement.
