3 cdm This descriptin applies t cdm prbe versin 4.3x. Nimsft CPU, Disk & Memry perfrmance prbe (cdm) mnitrs varius system perfrmance variables. The cdm perfrmance prbe mnitrs perfrmance and lad n critical system resurces such as: CPU (multi-cpu supprt frm versin 3.0) Disk Memry The prbe perates in tw mdes: Generate alarms based n cnfigured threshld values. Generate trending statistics. The trending data is sent as Quality f Service data t the data_engine prbe. This facilitates capacity planning fr the mnitred system See hw disks are filling up ver time. Plan batch jbs based n CPU utilizatin etc. Nte 1 The cdm prbe can mnitr lcal disks as well as shares. When mnitring shared disks (such as NFS munts) ver lw-perfrmance r ver-utilized lines, yu may experience that the prbe GUI respnds slwly when attempting t start it. 4 cdm Cnfiguratin Nte when cpying prbe cnfiguratin parameters frm ne cdm prbe t anther: It is pssible t cpy the prbe cnfiguratin parameters frm ne prbe t anther (see the Infrastructure Manager dcumentatin). This is useful if yu have cnfigured a prbe n ne Rbt, and yu want t use the same cnfiguratin parameters n the same type f prbe installed n ther Rbts. Hwever, when perfrming this peratin with the cdm prbe, yu must ensure that the disk partitins are the same n the surce and the target cmputers. Example: If the surce cmputer has a C: and a D: partitin, and yu cpy the cdm prbe cnfiguratin t a cdm prbe n a cmputer with nly a C: partitin, the cdm prbe n this cmputer will try t mnitr a D: partitin (which is missing) and reprt an errr. When cnfiguring the cdm prbe yu will be directed int the Status tab. This will shw histric utilizatin infrmatin based n hw many samples the prbe shuld keep. Nte that when the cdm prbe runs in a clustered envirnment in cperatin with the cluster prbe. The prbe will autmatically detect the cluster disks, create prfiles fr these and register them with the cluster prbe. On upgrade, yu shuld remve lcal prfiles fr the cluster disks. 5 The cluster "Setup" tab Setting up "General" preferences Field Lg level Lg size Update buttn Send Alarm n each sample Descriptin Sets the level f details written t the lg file. Lg as little as pssible during nrmal peratin, t minimize disk cnsumptin. Set the size f the prbe s lg file t which prbeinternal lg messages are written. The default size is 100 KB. When this size is reached, the cntents f the file are cleared. Updates the graphs with the mst current sample values. By default, this checkbx is selected, which means that the cdm prbe will generate an alarm n each sample. Please nte that the sample cllected at the start f prbe is cnsidered t be the first sample. If yu un-select the checkbx, the prbe waits fr the number f samples (specified in Samples field f the Cntrl prperties tab) befre sending the alarm. On restart, the prbe keeps the sample histry and sends alarm (except if prbe is restarted befre it has received required n. f samples). The sample cunt is cleared n de-activatin f prbe. 6 Setting up "Cntrl prperties" The cntrl prperties will cntrl: Hw ften the prbe asks fr data. Hw many samples the prbe shuld stre t calculate the values used t determine the threshld breaches. Example: The cdm prbe gets the values frm the perfrmance cunters (Windws). One value is fetched n each interval. If the interval is set t 1 minute and number f samples is set t 5, the CPU utilizatin is the average fr the last 5 minutes. If the interval is set t 5 minutes and number f samples is set t 5, the CPU utilizatin is the average fr the last 25 minutes. Field Interval Samples Descriptin Sets the interval n ften the prbe shuld cllect the data frm the system. Sets the number f samples the prbe will keep in memry fr average/threshld cmparisn. If yu un-select the Send Alarm n each sample checkbx in the General tab, the prbe waits fr the number f samples (specified in Samples field f the Cntrl prperties tab) befre sending the alarm. 7 Setting up "Message definitins" The prbe ffers functinality t redefine the messages used/sent whenever a threshld is breached. A message is defined as a text string with a severity level. This means that any message string (with an individual severity level) may be assigned t any "checkpint". The messages can be managed by right-clicking the "Message pl" list. A checkpint is referred t using a message tken. The message tkens are preset by the prbe and are therefre nt mdifiable. Threshlds can be specified fr: CPU (%) High (errr) and Lw (warning) threshld fr ttal CPU usage High (errr) threshld fr individual CPU usage (alarms are sent when ne f the CPUs in multi-cpu systems breaches the threshld). CPU difference threshld (alarms are sent when the difference in CPU usage between different CPUs in multi- CPU systems breaches the threshld). Disk (MB r %) The threshlds fr disks can be mdified by duble-clicking the disk-entries under the Status tab. Threshlds can be set (in MB r %) fr High (errr) and Lw (warning) disk usage, in additin t QS fr disk usage (in Mb and/r %) can als be selected here. Nimsft Dcumentatin: cdm v4.3x 7

Add a new message definitin by clicking New frm the right-click menu in the "Message pl". Mdify the text string and severity level t yur needs. Select the message tken disk_errr. Save the new message definitin with a intuitive name e.g. myoraclediskerrr Duble click (r right-click Edit) in the Status/Disk usage list n the targeted disk Set the High threshld t 10 MB. 9 Memry (%) Depends n what memry view is selected in the memry usage graph, where yu may tggle between three views (see the Status tab). Memry usage High (errr) and Lw (warning) threshld fr pagefile usage and paging activity Physical memry Swap memry(unix systems) Cmputer Here yu can select the alarm message t be issued if the cmputer is rebted. Yu can drag the alarm message frm the list in the message pl. The default alarm message will give the time when the cmputer was rebted. Internal Here yu can select the alarm message t be issued if the prbe is nt able t fetch data. Yu can drag the alarm message frm the list in the message pl. 10 Setting up "Cluster" The Cluster tab will nly be available when the cdm prbe is cnfigured as a part f a cluster. This tab displays a list f detected virtual grups belnging t the cluster. By editing the entries, yu can set the alarm surce and QS surce t be used fr disks belnging t that virtual grup. The available ptins fr alarm surce and QS surce are: <cluster ip> <cluster name> <cluster name>.<grup name> T edit the alarm surce r QS surce: 1. Select a Virtual grup entry and duble click it. 2. 11 3. Frm the Alarm surce drp-dwn, select the desired ptin. 4. Similarly, frm the QS surce drp-dwn, select the desired ptin 5. Click OK. The cluster "Status" tab The status frm is divided int 2 majr areas: 1. CPU and Memry area cntaining the fllwing three graphs: - CPU usage - Memry usage - Paging activity 1. Disk infrmatin area CPU and Memry area The graphs all display fur plts where: Actual samples are green. Average is blue. Errr threshld (if cnfigured) is red. Warning threshld (if cnfigured) is yellw. 12 The three views are: Memry usage (% f ttal available memry (physical memry + virtual memry)). Physical memry (in % f ttal available physical memry (RAM)). Swap memry. On UNIX systems, this value refers t the % f available swap space. Nte: Typing <ctrl>+s n yur keybard will save the current view fr this graph, and this view will be shwn the next time yu pen the prbe GUI. Yu can enter the Threshld values by clicking the up/dwn indicatr fr High and Lw, r by typing the value int the text field. Please nte that it the prbe uses the average value as the reference value when it determines whether a threshld is breached r nt. Disk area The disk infrmatin list displays which disks are installed n the system, and hw much they are filled. Yu may mnitr disks individually, with individual threshld values, individual messages and severity levels. Adding a share On Windws, yu may als enter shares t be mnitred. Right-click in the disk usage list and select 'New share'. The share is specified with the frmat \\cmputer\share. Once the share is specified, yu are presented with a dialg windw, which allws yu t specify user/passwrd t be used when testing the availability f the share, and the message t be used if a share is determined t be unavailable. 13 Please nte that shares are tested frm the service cntext, and that the prbe just checks that it is pssible t munt the shares. On UNIX platfrms, NFS file systems can als be mnitred. Nte that by default NFS file systems are mnitred fr availability nly. By right-clicking a mnitred NFS File system in the list, yu get the ptin t enable/disable space mnitring f the file system. Nte, hwever, that enabling space mnitring f a NFS file system may cause prblems fr the cdm prbe if the cmmunicatin with the NFS server is disrupted (e.g. stale NFS handles). 14 Tltip Placing the cursr n a shared disk in the Disk usage list (see figure belw), the current status fr the shared disk will be shwn (fr example Ok, Netwrk path nt fund etc.) Edit the prperties fr a mnitred disk Right-clicking a mnitred disk in the list allws yu t: Edit the prperties fr a disk entry in the list. 15 Internal disks The fllwing prperties can be mdified: Disk usage and threshlds tab The tab indicates the amunt f used, free and ttal disk space fr the file system. Select if the threshld settings fr disk usage shuld be specified in Mbytes r %. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the high threshld. If activated and the amunt f free space gets belw this value, a DiskErrr alarm message will be issued. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the lw threshld. If activated and the amunt f free space gets belw this value, a DiskWarning alarm message will be issued. Enable/disable fr QS messages n disk usage in Mb. 16 Inde usage and threshlds tab This tab is nly activated fr UNIX systems; therwise it is greyed ut. The tab indicates the amunt f used, free and ttal number f indes n the file system. Select if the threshld settings fr indes usage shuld be specified in number f indes r %. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the high threshld. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the lw threshld. Enable/disable fr QS messages n indes usage in inde cunt. Enable/disable fr QS messages n inde usage in %. Disk usage change and threshlds tab The tab lets yu specify the alarm cnditins fr alarms t be issued when changes in disk usage ccur. Disk usage change calculatin This ptin lets yu select the hw t calculate the change in disk usage: Change summarized ver all samples Using this ptin, the change in disk usage will be the difference between the latest sample and the first sample in the samples windw. The number f samples the prbe will keep in memry fr threshld cmparisn is set as Samples n the Setup > Cntrl Prperties tab. If fr example set t 4, the last (furth) sample will be cmpared against the first sample. Change between each sample Using this ptin, the change in disk usage will be calculated after each time a sample is cllected. Threshld setting This sectin lets yu define the alarm cnditins: Type f change Here yu can select if alarms shuld be issued n increase, decrease r bth increase and decrease in disk usage. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the high threshld fr change in disk usage. Default is 2 Mb. Activate/deactivate and set the value and alarm message fr the lw threshld fr change in disk usage. Default is 1 Mb. QS Enable/disable fr QS messages n disk usage change in Mb. 17 Shares The fllwing prperties can be mdified: Mdify the user and passwrd n the cmputer hsting the share. Dmain user can be specified if the machine is a member f a Dmain. Select the alarm message fr the cnnectin. Enable/disable QS messages n flder availability. The cluster "Multi CPU" tab Nte that this tab will nly appear when the cdm prbe is running n a multi-cpu cmputer. This tab cntains a graph displaying the alarm threshld and the CPU usage fr the different CPUs in a multi-cpu cnfiguratin. The fllwing threshlds and ptins can be set: Maximum High (errr) threshld (in %) fr individual CPU usage (alarms are sent when ne f the CPUs in multi-cpu systems breaches the threshld). Difference CPU difference threshld (in %). Alarms are sent when the difference in CPU usage between different CPUs in multi-cpu systems breaches the threshld). Select prcessrs t view Here yu can select which prcessr(s) t view in the graph. By default all are shwn. When clicking ne f the prcessrs in the list, nly that prcessr will be shwn. 19 The cluster "Advanced" tab This tab ffers the fllwing advanced settings: Quality f Service Messages QS messages are generated every time the values are checked. Lk at the Setup/Cntrl prperties tab t find the time intervals. Yu may enable the sending f QS messages fr the fllwing data: CPU Usage: This tab is divided int Ttal CPU and Individual CPU (in the case f a multi-cpu cnfiguratin). Nte that the Individual CPU tab is greyed ut if in the case f a single- CPU cnfiguratin. - CPU Usage (Ttal) in %. This QS message includes CPU User, CPU System and ptinally CPU Wait, depending n if the CPU Usage ptin at the bttm f the dialg (see belw) is checked r nt. Ttal CPU usage is a measure f hw much time the CPU spends n user applicatins and high-level system functins. Even when the CPU usage is 0%, the CPU is still perfrming basic system task, like respnding t muse mvements and keybard input. - CPU System in % Measures the time the CPU spends n system tasks. - CPU Wait in % The time (in %) the CPU waits when accessing external memry r anther device. 20 - CPU Idle in %. The time (in %) the CPU runs idle withut prcessing anything. Prcessr Queue Length (Windws nly) Fr AIX, SGI, Linux and Slaris, this QS message refers t System Lad). Measures the number f queued prcesses, divided with the number f prcessrs, waiting fr time n the CPU Cmputer uptime (hurly) Measures the cmputer uptime in secnds every hur. Memry Usage Hw much memry f the ttal available (physical + virtual memry) is used (in Mbytes and/r %). Paging QS messages can be sent n kilbytes per secnd (Kb/s) and/r pages per secnd (Pg/s). Nte: If yu have been running CDM versin 3.70 r earlier, the QS settings in the prbe GUI were different frm CDM versin Hwever, if CDM versin 3.70 r earlier already has created QS entries in the database fr kilbytes per secnd (Kb/s) and/r pages per secnd (Pg/s), these entries will be kept and updated with QS data frm newer CDM versins (3.72 and higher). Memry Paging in Kb/s The amunt f memry that has been sent t r read frm virtual memry in Kb/secnd Memry Paging in Pg/s The amunt f memry that has been sent t r read frm virtual memry in pages/secnd Physical Memry usage Hw much f the ttal available physical memry is used (in Kbytes and/r %) Swap Memry usage The space n the disk used fr swapping (in Kbytes and/r %). Prcessr Queue Length (Windws NT and Windws 2000 nly). Fr AIX, SGI Linux and Slaris, this ptin mnitrs System Lad. Enabling this setting will activate checking f the prcessr queue length (system lad in the case f AIX, SGI and Slaris); alarm messages will be generated accrding t the threshld value yu specify. Default value is 4. Nte: If running n a multiprcessr system, the queued prcesses will be shared n the number f prcessrs. If running n a system with 4 prcessrs and using the default Max Queue length value (4), alarm messages will be generated if the number f queued prcesses exceeds 16. Alarm n Detected Rebt When this ptin is ticked, an alarm will be issued if the cmputer hsting the prbe is rebted. Nimsft Dcumentatin: cdm v4.3x 20

21 CPU Usage ptin: If checked, the QS message n CPU Ttal (see abve) includes CPU User, CPU System and CPU Wait. If nt checked, CPU Ttal includes CPU User and CPU System nly. Paging measured in: Paging is the amunt f memry which has been sent t r read frm virtual memry (in pages/secnd r KB/secnd, depending n the setting). This ptin lets yu select the Paging t be measured in ne f the fllwing units: Kilbytes per secnd (KB/s) Pages per secnd (Pg/s) Nte that the size f the pages may vary between different perating systems When changing unit, the header f the Paging graph n the Status tab will immediately change t shw the selected unit, but the values in the graph will nt change until the next sample is measured. QS messages fr Disk usage Nte that Quality f Service messages can als be sent n Disk usage (bth in % and MB), and availability fr shared disks (als disk usage n NFS file systems if the Enable space mnitring ptin is set fr the file system as described in the sectin The cluster "Status" tab. These ptins can be selected when defining the threshld values fr these ptins under the Status tab. QS messages fr NFS file systems Fr NFS file systems, yu can select QS messages n Disk availability t be sent. Right-click the filesystem n the Status tab and select Edit. 22 Tick the Disk Available Quality f Service ptin in the prperties dialg ppping up, and then click the OK buttn. Memry usage n Slaris systems There seems t be sme cnfusin abut the memry usage the CDM prbe reprts n Slaris systems. Mst ften, the issue is that CDM des nt prvide the same numbers that the ppular TOP utility des. The main reasn fr this is that TOP and CDM gather swap infrmatin differently. CDM gathers swap infrmatin in a similar way as the Slaris utility "swap - l" des, but using pages instead f blcks. T cmpare the swap infrmatin between CDM and the "swap" utility yu take the blcks "swap" reprts and run it thrugh the frmula: (blcks * 512) / (1024 * 1024) = ttal_swap MB. This is the same number f MB the CDM prbe uses in its calculatins. TOP n the ther hand gathers infrmatin abut "annymus pages" in the VM, which, while quicker and easier t gather, d nt represent a true picture f the amunt f swap space available and used. The reasn fr this is that annymus pages als take int accunt physical memry that is ptentially available fr use as swap space! Thus, the TOP utility will reprt mre ttal swap space since it is als factring in physical memry nt in use at this time. CDM and TOP gather physical memry infrmatin in similar ways, s the differences in available physical memry shuld be insignificant. Since CDM des nt differentiate between available swap and physical memry (after all, it is nly when yu run ut f bth f the resurces that things stp wrking n the system), the accumulated numbers are used. The accumulated numbers fr TOP will be ff, since the free prtins f physical memry will be cunted twice in many instances. While we culd easily represent the data in the same frmat that TOP des, we feel it des nt give a crrect picture f the memry/swap usage n the system. Nimsft Dcumentatin: cdm v4.3x 22

23 The cluster "Custm" tab The custm tab will list the currently defined custm prfiles. Custm prfiles are used t get additinal threshlds and alarm fr checkpints that are available in the prbe. All the alarm situatins are available, except fr thse available fr multi-cpu and cluster disks. The alarms fr each custm prfile will be sent using suppressin keys unique t the prfile s that yu can get multiple alarms fr what is basically the same alarm situatin (fr instance, the a breach f the memry usage threshld). 24 The CPU prfile Threshlds and alarm messages can be specified fr the fllwing parameters: Overall CPU usage CPU usage fr user prcesses CPU usage fr system prcesses CPU I/O Wait System lad (n UNIX) / Prcessr queue length (n Windws) The Disk prfile The disk prfile can be f three different types, as described belw. 25 Lcal: lcal file systems Can mnitr disk availability, space free, indes free and changes in disk usage The Indes free tab is disabled if the cnfiguratin tl detects that n inde infrmatin can be btained (fr instance fr a Windws file system). Nimsft Dcumentatin: cdm v4.3x 25

26 NFS: Netwrk File System munted n the machine Only available n UNIX. By default, these file systems are nly mnitred fr availability, but checking the Allw space mnitring checkbx will allw the same checkpints as fr a lcal file system. Nimsft Dcumentatin: cdm v4.3x 26

28 The Memry prfile Threshlds can be set fr Memry usage, Physical memry usage, Swap memry usage and Paging activity. Nte that the unit used fr paging activity is determined by the Paging measured in setting in the Advanced tab. Optins cnfigured using Raw Cnfigure Belw yu will find sme useful ptins that can be set, using the Raw Cnfiguratin tl: ignre_device ignre_filesystem Open the Raw Cnfiguratin tl in the Infrastructure Manager (hld dwn the Shift key and right-click the cdm prbe. Next, select Raw Cnfigure). T ignre certain disks and/r file systems, yu can edit ne f these tw keys in the <disk> sectin: ignre_device = /<regular expressin>/ ignre_filesystem = /<regular expressin>/ The value shuld be a regular expressin that wuld match all disks and/r file systems yu want the prbe t ignre.
