OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS POST TITLE TOURIST INFORMATION ASSISTANT POST REFERENCE The following information is furnished to assist staff joining the Metropolitan Council to understand and appreciate the work content of their post and the role they are to play in the organisation. However the following points should be noted: 1. Whilst every endeavour has been made to outline all the duties and responsibilities of the post, a document such as this does not permit every item to be specified in detail. Broad headings therefore may have been used below, in which case all the usual associated routines are naturally included in the job description. 2. Officers should not refuse to undertake work which is not specified on this form but they should record any additional duties they are required to perform and these will be taken into account when salaries are reviewed. 3. PRIME OBJECTIVES OF THE POST: To promote Haworth/Ilkley/Bradford and the region as a desirable holiday and leisure based destination. To assist in the provision of a local & national tourist information service to visitors and residents within the District in person, by telephone, and post. SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIALRESPONSIBILITIES: Occasional supervision of trainees/students on placement or casual staff. SUPERVISION & GUIDANCE: Responsible to the Deputy TIC manager and TIC supervisor, who will provide overall supervision and guidance as necessary. The post holder is expected to work with minimal supervision and at certain times, according to rota, no immediate supervision is available. The post holder may be required to perform opening & closing down operations. The post holder may be required to provide cover across the 3 TIC s as required.

2 RANGE OF DECISION MAKING: Decisions relating to the successful working of the centre and the promotion of the service. RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSETS, MATERIALS ETC: Generally responsible to the TIC Supervisor/Deputy Manager for keeping safe all cash, stock, tickets and other property. RANGE OF DUTIES: 1. To provide a local & national tourist information service to visitors and residents in person, by telephone, by post and Assist in the maintenance of up-to-date information files and reference works. 3. To order, organise and maintain supplies of leaflets and other publications relating to tourist attractions and activities, both local and national. 4. To sell publications and other items, e.g. maps & souvenirs. 5. To operate a computerised theatre booking service (Ilkley), National Express tickets (Ilkley) and other tickets (all TIC s). 6. To assist in the compilation of a register of tourist accommodation and operate the chargeable local & national bed booking service. 7. To assist in the compilation of publicity and information leaflets, maps and other brochures. 8. To ensure that all displays are up to date and that the overall appearance of the TIC is attractive. 9. To balance daily and weekly cash and complete financial returns in accordance with financial procedure, unsupervised as necessary. 10. To assist in the stocktaking of saleable items. 11. To assist in the promotional work of the TIC. 12. To attend appropriate training courses. 13. To wear a uniform as provided by C.B.M.D.C. 14. To liase with other tourist related organisations and businesses, e.g. local hotels and attractions, other C.B.M.D.C. departments and other local & national associations as appropriate.

To assist in the provision of a local & national tourist information service to visitors and residents within the District in person, by telephone and post. CRITERIA HOW IDENTIFIED EXPERIENCE Minimum of 2 years experience in a TIC or similar retail service. Experience of working for a public sector organisation. QUALIFICATIONS O level GCSE English or equivalent.or 2 years experience in a related field. Customer Service qualification. Tourism qualification. Certificates.

5 TRAINING Commitment to self-development. Willingness to undertake YTB and TIC specific training courses as required. Evidence of personal and career development. SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE A thorough appreciation of and sympathy with the diverse nature of this or a similar district. Knowledge of major tourist attractions in UK. Understanding of sensitivities of tourism sector. Computer literate. Referees. Presentation at interview. Experience of marketing, publicity, press and PR. Knowledge of new media. PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES Must be prepared to work flexible hours to include evenings, weekends, Bank Holidays as required. Flexible approach to rostered hours. Provide cover across 3 TIC s as required. Must be legally entitled to work in the United Kingdom. No contra-indications in background with regard to holding a position of trust. Certificates.
