Resource saving technologies introduction into vegetable production. Save vegetable production. Diversification. Seed system development. Marketing research. Capacity building. International cooperation.
(CACVEG) Regional Network for Vegetable Systems Research & Development established in 9 August 2006 brought together eight countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) National coordinators on vegetable system R&D have been appointed by Ministries of Agriculture in each country.
Suggested Directions for Joint Research Germplasm exchange and management. Expansion of non-traditional and indigenous vegetables. Adoption of promising varieties and appropriate technologies. Monitoring systems for diseases and pests. GAP and IPM to ensure quality and safe products. Improved seed systems for OP and hybrid varieties. Strategy development to improve value-added processing and export marketing potentials. Capacity building to advance R&D. CACVEG

AVRDC germplasm and promising lines for vegetable production improvement AVRDC tomato germplasm/lines are evaluated as rootstock for grafting of local varieties in Uzbekistan and Armenia
AVRDC new varieties are used by local partners for research, school and home gardens School garden (8 vegetable crops) were established in Ramitan district, Bukhara province (step area) and the Bostanlyk district, Tashkent province (piedmont). Seminars on new vegetable species for pupils was conducted in Ramitan. Research at the National University of Uzbekistan AVRDC National University of Uzbekistan
AVRDC new varieties are used by farmers Farmers Days were conducted in CAC countries. Training of Trainees for 40 leader farmers-women was conducted jointly with ICARDA and CACAARI in Fergana valley in March 2014 AVRDC new varieties presented on Exhibitions
Achievements Adapt integrated production technologies for targeted systems or regions Grafting method evaluation for Fusarium control and tomato cultivation in greenhouse and an open field was conducted in Uzbekistan. Total AVRDC tomato 60 lines evaluated as rootstock for grafting of local varieties. The thesis for Master Degree on tomato grafting technology was defended at the Tashkent State Agrarian University in For the first time tomato grafting technology was also applied in farmer s farm in Armenia.
Crop diversification Early maturing, high yielding with a compact bush mungbean, vegetable soybean and long yard bean varieties introduced in crop diversification. Rhizobia on mungbean roots

AVRDC-CAC collaboration on Dryland System CRP 1.1. AVRDC new varieties have been involved in CRP 1.1. Activities since 2013: Activity 1. Identify and introduce stress-tolerant, high-yielding and improved quality varieties of cereals, potato, vegetable, horticultural and fodder crops in pure and mixed plantations through on-farm adaptive trials (ICARDA, CIP, AVRDC, Bioversity Int., ICBA).. Activity 2. Establish a seed system platform compatible with existing agro-ecological environments to supply farmers with high quality seed and planting materials so as to improve livelihoods, food security and incomes of smallholders (ICARDA, CIP, AVRDC, Bioversity Int., ICBA). Activity 3. Improve the productivity of marginal lands in irrigated farming and pastoral systems ( ICBA, AVRDC). Activity 4. Improve water use efficiency through innovative technologies in irrigation and farming in cereals, potato, vegetable, horticultural and fodder crops (IWMI, AVRDC).
New projects ( ) Tajikistan Nutrition-Sensitive Vegetable Technologies (USAID, ). Improved high-yielding and bruchid-resistant mungbean for higher income and better nutrition (BMZ-GIZ, ). CRP 1.1. Dryland System (Activities 1, 2, 3 and 4). State grand of Uzbekistan Complex study of tomato germplasm for stress environment factors tolerance, molecular passportization, revealing of promising accessions for breeding and introducing into production ( ).
Strategic approaches Germplasm enhancement. Use of the world s largest public collection of vegetable germplasm for developing of new varieties with particular impact in developing countries. A balance of research and development. Application of research in collaboration with farmers to breed well-adapted cultivars and develop technologies to increase yields and incomes in developing countries. Research and development that benefits women. More diverse crop production. Vegetables have an essential role to play in balancing diets and alleviating malnutrition, in particular micronutrient malnutrition. A close and productive relationship with the private sector. Research benefit. Support farmers increase vegetable harvests, raise incomes in poor rural and urban households, create jobs, and provide healthier, more nutritious diets for families and communities. Impact analyses.
A long-term focus on climate change research Breeding and agronomic research to adapt vegetable crops to the high temperatures and weather extremes conditions likely to be more prevalent with climate change. Promote indigenous vegetables that are already well-adapted to the extremes of climate. Heat resistant, drought resistant and salt tolerant vegetable crops varieties development. Research on vegetable production systems to cope with climate change including work on heat-, drought and salt tolerance, promoting grafting technology, non-traditional and other high-value crops. Variety diversity for year-round vegetable production
A balanced diet Measures to promote the health benefits of vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and to develop the specific health-promoting properties of particular vegetables There is a pressing need to improve the nutritional quality of diets in the region. Developing infrastructure for a year-round vegetable supply can improve consumption and nutrition.
Approaches A common information and communication platform is needed for knowledge and information sharing at different levels. Success stories. Technology transfer through extension and farmer advisory services should be developed. Enhancing the capacity of stakeholders for innovation and effective participation in collaborative projects is necessary. Global and regional networks can lead these initiatives.
